Slight diversion from the original point in case. I think TGS was definitely written with a transfer to stage in mind and its probably a race now to see which lands first, Showman or La La Land. I honestly think that these things are ALWAYS written with a transfer to stage in mind these days, whether it's Disney's animated movies or this new slew of movie musicals with "real people". The Mamma Mia Sequel will turn up on stage sooner or later too, I'm sure. As for WHY this is so successful - I felt it was average at most myself, but I would agree with Kathryn that people are looking for something cheerful and uplifting in these glum winter days when the real world out there is increasingly depressing. I would also assume that the average cinema-goer isn't as experienced in the done-to-death theatrical tropes of "self-identity and breaking-free" as we are. You know what the 'not everyone is as experienced' reminds me of what my Mum said about it 'If we didn't watch as many musicals we'd think it was brilliant' which about sums it up! Every 'casual' musicals fan I know thinks it's the best thing since ....well probably Mama Mia |

Which just goes to show that Hollywood is missing a trick by not making more movie-musicals. Clearly there’s an audience for them!

People pay for their cinema tickets before they see the film! A huge amount of this film's success is repeat viewings. There isn't an infinite market of first timers who conveniently spread themselves relatively equally over each week, there are a lot of people that have gone 5, 10 times to see this, if you search The Greatest Showman on Twitter, about half of the tweets are "saw this for the third time yesterday" or "my 5th time today and I dragged all my family along with me". Had people only been seeing this once, the grosses would have decreased substantially week on week. |

Nah, it's not repeat viewers themselves producing box office. It never is - they're always a noisy minority, there's simply not enough of them to be significantly changing the numbers. A Twitter search will find many repeat viewers for the vast majority of popular films, not just this one. There's always a small number of people who passionately love a film.
Though of course the word of mouth from repeat viewers has an impact - telling their friends to see it, and taking friends and family (who may not enjoy it as much as the repeat viewer) for the first time. But with movie box office large numbers always mean that the vast majority of people saw it once, and a comparatively tiny minority saw it lots of times.

Finally watched this today. Cinema very busy with lots of teens and families in.
Thought it was fine - diverting enough for a couple of hours. I’m sure there was a more interesting story in there though, about the actual circus performers.

It's a whole evening event in a proper old theatre with 'pre-show activities'. I'm hoping this means Hugh Jackman wandering around in his ringmaster outfit. |

This is an absolute phenomenon at the UK Box Office. It opened at number 3 at the end of December, it has been in the top 5 for 9 weeks straight, it was number 2 this last weekend, behind only "Black Panther." It resists gravity. It has made approximately £2 million every single weekend. More generally, three of the all time top 5 grossing live action musicals (not counting inflation, of course lol) have been released in the last year or so: Beauty and the Beast, La La Land and this. So, it really feels like a good time for movie musicals at the minute. Hope the trend sustains.  |

Incredible isn’t it? While I was buying tickets for something else the other night there was a group of five teenage lads at the next machine buying tickets for this. My friends 80 year old Mum liked it too. It seems to completely defy demographics.

I forgot to post that I went to the sing-a-long on Satdatmy afternoon (4th time seeing this film).
I went solo & really enjoyed it, I picked the afternoon showing at the O2 has I figured it would be attended but half full (Expect busier in the evening showing).
No real bad behaviour- people were singing along (including me) & once in a while I noticed some hands waving in the air!
It was a mixed audience, parents with kids, couples or two friends & us solo pottered around! I did wonder if I would have gotten self conscious but I didn’t (mind ‘Never Enough’ & ‘Tightrope’ are tricky!!).
My friend has booked us to go see at Regents Park aioen Air in September!!
Love the film!!

There was a local actor being MC who gave away some cinema passes , and a few performers (gymnasts,a strongman and a guy on stilts) in the foyer. We had short pre-recorded videos from Hugh & Keala introducing the film. It was a fun night and the audience got right into things, most notably booing poor Jenny Lind! |

I didn't fancy this at all when it was released, though people where I volunteer (who rarely share my taste in films and don't go to the theatre except for an annual treat) raved about it and were talking of going back. However, I was a bit desperate for something to see before a matinee recently, so I went to the Senior Screen performance at a Picture House. Normally these are very popular, especially at that particular site (Gate, Notting Hill), but most unusually, this one was sparsely attended and I was probably the sole senior. However, the rest of the audience consisted mainly of teenagers, so it seems correct that they also like this. Mind you, I don't know why they weren't at school. As for the film, it was what I expected (and Hugh Jackman leaping around was heave-making), but I did like the music, which I found very catchy.

I just saw this tonight and I'm loving the soundtrack, very entertaining movie! I had expected it to be longer though, it could have easily gone on for another 30 minutes. I think the messages of the movie resonate with many people, acceptance and belonging are universal themes. There's something special about this movie, it has heart, which is why I think it appeals to such a large demographic. They already said it in the movie, it doesn't matter if it's fake if the joy is real. This is me. 😭

Just looked at the midweek charts, and This is Me is still in the Top 10, whilst Never Enough and A Million Dreams have entered the Top 30, meaning if they holds there until Friday, five of the eleven songs from the soundtrack have been in the Top 30 (the other two being Rewrite the Stars and The Greatest Show), which is crazy considering the film has been out as long as it has!

Same! I'm quite often in the gym while one of the music channels has a chart update on and it's so odd seeing a musical film up there! it's nice, but odd! Apparently UK cinema sales of this were up 26% this weekend and it’s now taken more than £37 million! Great to see it still doing so well.

I was in the cinema earlier this week to see something else and got talking to the woman next to me - she said she'd seen 'The Greatest Showman' three times and her daughter had gone five times. Then a preview of 'The Greatest Showman' came on and she said to me, 'I've gone all goosebumpy.'
I still haven't seen it.
