Random thought popped into my head earlier. What was the last song from a musical to make a serious impression in the UK Singles Charts? Westlife & Whistle Down the Wind? I guess I can see that over the last decade (or two) music tastes reflected in the charts have become a bit more specialised (rock, dance, etc) than previously being brim full of ballads etc. and generally aimed at a younger audience. But now with a real decline in sales across the board surely it would be easier for musical songs to chart? Producers seem to have stopped releasing Singles as a method of promotion for a new musical, but yet theres still a trend to churn out the cast recording on an album release within a fairly quite turn around of opening. (c.~1year)
Any thoughts?
