Last year I posted about a show that was trying out in Chicago. People didn't really pay attention, but then it opened on Broadway and people started taking about War Paint.
So here's a little gem that is finally making its way to Broadway in the fall. The Band's Visit is a beautiful musical written by David Yazbeck, telling the story of an Egyptian military band taking the wrong bus into a remote and obscure town in Israel. Townspeople host the band for the night, until the band departs the next day to catch the bus to the right town.
Beautifuls score and story. It will win everything. I saw it last year at the Atlantic Theatre Company off-Broadway. Tony Shalhoub and Katrina Lenk were fabulous.

7 Drama Desk nominations and 3 wins for its off-broadway run. Compare that to what this year's Tony favourite Dear Evan Hansen got when it was off-broadway (3 nominations and 1 win) and I think it's fair to say The Band's Visit is already a strong favourite for next year. Particularly when we look at the uninspired selection of new musicals announced thus far. I look forward to seeing it.

It sounds really interesting. Hope it makes it to London as I'm unlikely to go to Broadway anytime soon.
