It was nowhere near as sold out as other recent shows, sadly. I was still able to get tickets for the penultimate evening just a few days earlier, which was nowhere near possible with shows like Grey Gardens, Carrie, Xanadu etc.

Given how fringe sell outs can often do badly in town, I don't think ticket sales are really a big factor on deciding a transfer. Take Urinetown. That sold massively well at the St James, but ended up losing £1.5 million at the Apollo and playing to as few as 12 people (or so I hear anyway). The thing that matters is if the show actually has mass appeal and can capture an audience. Toxic Avenger was barely marketed, with no names in the cast, by small producers with little money for promo (Carrie was bankrolled by Bill Kenwright, for example). I think, with the right marketing, Toxic Avenger has a far better chance of selling to a wider audience than Grey Gardens or Xanadu. I've always said that they way to make a success in the West End is to do something different, or at least different enough that you stand out from the competition. With it's dark but not depressing design, un-PC and occasionally meta humour, a rock score (something that has been absent in the West End for a while) and with superheroes being very much in vogue right now (the latest Marvel film has gone past the £30 million mark in the UK) I think it could easily be a hit, especially if they followed Avenue Q's example of cheeper tickets early in the run and for "young people" to build word of mouth and a cult following.

I really enjoyed this (glad I ditched my ticket for Ophelia's Zimmer at the Royal Court!)
Problem I see with a potential transfer is that a lot of the fun was the cheapness of it - eg all the jokes about doubling roles, filling in time while people did changes etc. Not sure that would come off in a bigger theatre with pricier tickets?

The show's Facebook page, which has been dormant for 3 months, has just put this up. notmymuse wins the point! Saw the final performance of this tonight. Went because I loved the Motown music and this has the same writers. I loved it, as did the rest of the audience. Standing ovation and several bows. It was very tight indeed and great voices. I could make out most of the words too, which is rare at this volume. Wonderful cast, great voices. Looked a smaller budget than Grey Gardens had, but a lot more fun. Considering it was sold out and audience reaction, I think this deserves a life elsewhere. I could see a limited run at the Arts for example, or Trafalgar 2.

I thoroughly enjoyed this so I'm very happy to have it back! I think the Arts is th perfect sized venue for a transfer, just a shame that it still seems to be in a success slump.

Aha, thanks, Monkey. It's a ratty venue but perhaps quite fitting for this show.
I missed this at Southwark and I feel meh about the CD (which I've had lying around for ages).
I doubt it will be selling well at these prices and I'm in town at the right time, so I'll look out for deals close to the date, then may take advantage of those Murder Ballad-style.

Loved this at Southwark but totally agree at £60 I'll wait for the discounts before paying another visit! I don't think it will sell out the same at that price. Have they announced any cast? Will Mark Anderson still be in it does anyone know? I was a big fan of his voice!
