I know the thought of karaoke makes a lot of people shudder, but I love it.
Whenever I go there's a disappointing lack of Musical Theatre songs. There's always the big ones from Harispray, Wicked, Les Mis, Cats etc.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a place which had a bigger/better selection from a wider variety of shows to sing??
Also, so that this topic doesn't die after one post, which song from a Musical would you pick first for karaoke?!

I don't think it'd work as a business for just Musical Theatre Karaoke but it'd be great if there was more choice in the main karaoke bars. I'd go for Enough from In The Heights (only if it was based on the London version) or maybe Tell Me It's Not True from Blood Brothers. I'd love some Sister Act (Musical) songs too. |

Seriously, I do enjoy finding good karaoke YouTube videos. Stars from Les Mis is a particular favourite, as is Bring Him Home and Empty Chairs. I fear any place that had a good selection of musical theatre karaoke would be invaded by that most boring of beasts - people who can sing a bit and know it. *I do not remember this. |

Yes. That's why the room style karaoke places can work better sometimes. It's nice to go with a group of friends and sing your head off without caring about being judged. Yes you can squeeze in a few solos but it's more fun if everyone's singing.

I know at G-A-Y/Heaven on a Friday night, in the little room they have a pianist (or they used to) who accompanies with quite a few show tunes on the list.

My friends runs Bar Broadway in Brighton that's a musical theatre karaoke bar. It does musical karaoke once a month! It is NOT a musical theatre karaoke bar although It can feel like that at weekends! It is a bar that plays musicals and theatre related tunes. Chico is performing bank holiday Monday If u have been to Oscars on Cannal Street in Manchester then u have been to Bar Broadway. According to Oscars barman when the owner split up with his bf, the bf came to Brighton and created a carbon copy bar! |

I have a two disc set of G&S – one with and the other without, singing. Lyrics are provided.
I thought it would be fun to take on Holiday. My sister declared that if either disc was put on she was packing up and going home.
I will confess, I was tempted.

Back in Australia my parent have a karaoke machine (my father and sister- my sister in particular- love a good warble on karaoke*) and somewhere she found a disc with all of the original ABBA film clips with lyrics.
Dammit even I can't turn down an ABBA song!
Technically not musical theatre but arguably equally just as good in my opinion.
*She gets so into it she's doing hand gestures as if she's holding a microphone and starts shouting "Turn the knobs, turn the knobs (dials)-her words, not mine- make me sound better!" Which, of course, means she sounds rubbish!

The only time I've been in the Theatre Cafe there was a woman with two young children, female variety, who were allowed to monopolise the mic at ear-splitting volume for the whole time I was there. Hideous. Hover with my veganin, Kenny.
If I were doing it I'd choose Out There from Hunchback. There are two problems with this though. Firstly i'd need a willing stooge to do the Frollo bit at the beginning, and secondly I can't sing it.

I hired the Theatre Cafe for a party and we did a lot of karaoke, most people just played whatever backing track they wanted of off YouTube as they only have a limited selection on the system. It was somewhere between £50 and £70 an hour to hire the cafe and you can bring your own booze so it actually works out cheaper than the private rooms at karaoke places like Lucky Voice. So it's good but just requires a bit of extra planning if your song isn't on their system!

Love it there and, as a not so great singer who nonetheless knows the words, I can lip sync to my heart's content while enjoying the fun. Someone tried to start up a similar thing in London - a regular night rather than a whole bar, but it was full of drama students and didn't have the same atmosphere. |
