Heathers: The Musical - TRH / The Other Palace / @sohoplace

I think - quite possibly? I didn't know her at all, either from other shows or from all the social media stuff and I had only a passing interest in Heathers as something about Mean Girls infinitely rubbed me the wrong way for personal reasons and I kinda rejected the idea of "another musical about bitchy American high school girls" out of hand.  I even sold the ticket I had booked for The Other Palace because I decided I didn't want to see it. But then all the chatter here and the hype and the overall positive commentary got me to think that it's unfair to ANY show to reject it out of hand and stared doing my homework.

So my first port of call was the actual movie with Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, which basically won me over within five minutes when I realized that it wasn't celebrating the bitch culture or put the three Heathers central, but the two snarky outsiders and turned it all into a dark satire. Then I listened to the cast recording online and thought, well, it's not my favorite kind of music, but it has a bunch of decent songs. So... I've now booked for the Haymarket run to see it after all. 

I could definitely see all the hoopla around Carrie generating interest in the show itself, getting the attention of people who know the movie or get curious enough to see it or just think the show has an interesting premise. Apart from Wicked and Jamie there aren't really any musicals geared towards a young female audience at the moment, so I can see a market there.

I realised i didn't really say what i thought of this. Well, i really liked it. I'd not seen any of it before, not heard any of it before save for Candy Store and Shine a Light. It was a bit different to what i expected, as in a bit more crazy and comedic than i envisaged going in. I thought the cast were universally excellent, i though vocally it was one of the best sounding shows around. Everyone had a great powerful voice without fail. I enjoyed the songs, i was lucky enough to go when the new song had just been introduced and i think it was one of my fave songs in the show, though i felt that you could tell Carrie was more unsure singing it and still finding her feet with it, which is to be expected.

Highlights are similar to most others i think, Jodie Steele was excellent, I loved Carrie, Jamie was menacing, i thought Sophie was brilliant, an absolute special mention for Rebecca Lock who stole the show for me. If there was someone who i was unsure of it was T'shan but i still thought she was great overall.

I felt maybe the 2nd act got a little bit disjointed but from what i've heard a lot of the 2nd act is going to be re written for the transfer so it will be interesting to see that in action.

The crowd were wild but in a good way, nothing crazy, no ruining anything, but just very loud and enthusiastic in the right moments. It's hard not to get swept up in the atmosphere. 

I do plan now to go back to see it at it's run at the TRH.

I saw this a couple of weeks ago and thought it was in very good shape. As has been mentioned the second act becomes disjointed and would benefit from a more flexible setting. Sad that I missed the new song, hopefully there will be a recording.

To tell the truth I wouldn’t have known Carrie Hope Fletcher if she’d bumped into me but she clearly has talent.

One other major plus, the audience. The sheer excitement and engagement was wonderful to see. I was slightly on the side so had a great view of how they were invested in the story and it was a joy to behold.

For anyone who contributes to this forum. There is not enough joy here, Nowhere near enough and nowhere near the enjoyment that regular audiences get out of theatre. Too much cynicism, too much negativity, too much ‘look at how superior I am to these writers/performers’ My toleration level for that sort of thing is rapidly sinking.

More of this type of audience please.

Got to love a last night .... even though it's transferring, there was so much excitement in the room on Saturday. A young audience and mainly female. I saw the film years ago, hadn't realised there would be so much humour in this. I do like Carrie Hope Fletcher, she's very good in this. And Jamie Muscato - good casting. I enjoyed watching the faces of the audience too, lots of enthusiasm. I doubt I'll see the transfer, but I enjoyed Saturday night very much.
