Fan conventions are a business, I'm not surprised that they've so lucrative. There was an article on THR saying that an actor could make more in a weekend at a convention than a guest spot on a TV show.

There was an article on THR saying that an actor could make more in a weekend at a convention than a guest spot on a TV show. I've just looked it up - the one from 2016? It's more extreme now, probably - I've seen prices of the equivalent of £150 and more a photo with the most popular stars at foreign cons. It'd be interesting to know more about this new economy! There's an an interview with Matt Damon posted on Reddit around the time a Netflix romcom film deal (not with him, I don't think) was reported to have fallen through because of the budget demanded, but it explained that with streaming there's no bums on seats box office, DVD/bluray sales or whatever providing ongoing revenue. The interview was saying this is why we don't get many mainstream, mid budget movies for adults anymore compared to the cinema ecology of the 20thc. I think is why so many movies and series are skewed towards the sort of things you can sell action figures off the back of, and all the sort of stuff you get at comic shops and comic cons now, including autographs and photo ops with the actors themselves. That's the band's album, this is the tour with the merch, sort of idea. Anyway, I appreciate this is getting a bit off topic but the autograph, official selfie economy is an interesting development these days regarding stars' interactions with fans.

I’d imagine it’s very rewarding to meet your ‘fans’ and the people who have afforded these people the celebrity and success they have. That would rather depend on the fan, and what they are doing, doesn’t it? Just because someone is a fan does not, alas, always mean that they behave in a reasonable manner. Plenty of stalkers out there. You just never know what is going on with a famous person when they don’t stop to sign autographs.

I have to admit when I see creatives like say Nick Hytner, I do wonder if I should approach them to say I enjoyed the performance but always decide against it.
Do producers ever get stop by people? I'm sure Cameron Mackintosh does but I imagine Sonia Friedman doesn't.

Matthew Bourne normally tours around with his productions and is generally in and around the auditorium for a couple of performances - he's really lovely, chatty and friendly with staff and audience.

This seems to have veered wildly away from nice/nasty actors into conventions.
Bringing it back on topic I recently met Peter Egan before he flew off on one of his wonderful animal rescue trips. What a bloody lovely bloke.

Sonia Friedman always looks terrifying so I doubt anyone would stop her unless it's to stroke one of her doggies. I think Sonia is quite shy which is probably why she avoids the limelight. Tom Schumacher of Disney Theatrical would be a fun one to meet as well.

It's a whole legit additional line of business in the pop music industry. Mostly another revenue stream because music doesn't pay the way it did before streaming became a thing.

I met James Norton last week and he was really lovely. I was internally fangirling I know the feeling. Getting smiled at by Aidan Turner at the stage door was enough to make this grown woman rediscover her inner 13-year-old. He's very sweet, at least he was to me. On the opposite end of the scale, I adore Patti Lupone, and she's tiny, but there's something in her eyes and presence that I find very, very intimidating. I think I just might be afraid of her a wee bit after meeting her a few times at the Company stage door.

Met Brian Cox after Long Days Journey, he’s an amazingly kind and generous man with his time for fans. In fact I asked for a photo, he said what about a selfie? I’m very self conscious and tried to say no, but he insisted. Lovely man.
Patricia Clarkson was lovely too. She’d sat on the edge of the stage right in front of me, so recognised me and we had a little chat.
Johnny Flynn is so kind, recognised me from the audience (front row) and was happy to chat for a moment. Such a gentleman and really great with fans.
