Hey, this is my first post on the forum and just need some help. I'm going to New York in July and hoping to watch some shows while I'm out there. I'm an avid theatre goer here in the UK so would be good to see some different things. Currently thinking about Dear Evan Hansen and Waitress (love the soundtracks to both).
But just wondering if theres anything else anyone recommends, anything thats opening soon etc.

Yes, both cast recordings are fabulous.
I would suggest adding War Paint. Its got two titans of the musical theatre world, Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole doing what they do best. The costumes are amazing and the design beautiful, and it's a good old fashioned musical score. For some '90s nostalgia, I would recommend Anastasia. Some of the music is terrific, and by the looks of it the projections and design are really good. For the hipster in you, you might want to check out the stage adaptation of Amelie. The music is contemporary and not easy to hum, but looks refreshingly offbeat. In terms of revivals, Hello Dolly with Bette Midler is going to be all the rage, but tickets are hard to come by. You might be lucky securing a ticket to a Tuesday evening performance when the gorgeous Donna Murphy plays Dolly. If you haven't seen Sunset Boulevard in London, the ENO production is playing on Broadway with all four leads. Ditto if you have missed Groundhog Day and Miss Saigon in London.
Good luck and enjoy!

I recommend Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 if you are up for something different. It's not an "easy" show (the fact the cast asks you to look at the synopsis and family tree in the playbill at the start of the show says it all) but I found myself drawn into it from the start. If you are able and willing to splash out on tickets on stage seats are the way to watch the show. Otherwise they do rush tickets depending on availablity. The staging is beautiful and the cast is great. And I really enjoyed seeing Josh Groban on stage but apart from one big ballad he isn't in the spotlight a lot.

I also recommend Natasha Pierre (I saw it last week). I agree on it not being something you can just plop down into and see completely blind, but it's definitely a memorable experience.

I third Natasha Pierre, easily my favourite new Broadway musical of the season.

I recommend Dear Evan Hansen.
Wish I had seen Natasha Pierre instead of War Paint...loved seeing Patti and Christine (they insisted I call them by their first names...) but found the music and story to be a drag.
Will be going to see Come from Away on my return trip in October - if it's still running. It looks original and has had good reviews in Canada.
And I guess Hello Dolly is a must see if you are a fan of Bette Midler. May be worth looking at Off Broadway as well given that tickets are so pricey for Broadway shows. I found that back row of Mezzanine was cheapest and decent view for most Broadway theatres.

How come I forget? I'm so self-absorbed I basically listed all the shows *I* intend to see and not shows that I've seen already..Yes on Comet. GREAT production and totally innovative. I don't specifically agree that it's "not easy". I mean, you really need to be spacing out not to follow along. And I feel considering how well the show is done and the innovation in staging, they don't allow you not to follow along and drift off.

A Bronx Tale is my recommendation. Cast recording is out Friday next week, and I'm so looking forward to it. Will most likely be seeing it twice during my June trip to New York

I would recommend Sweeney Todd off-Broadway if you didn't catch the London runs, that Harrington's production from Tooting was very memorable.
I haven't seen any of the other shows there that are different to the UK, but Hello, Dolly is a very hot ticket right now, as is Dear Evan Hansen. I'm going in three weeks' time and have booked for DEH, Waitress, and War Paint - with the intention of getting rush tickets for Come From Away whilst we're there, too.
