Hi everyone!
me and my partner are getting married in November and we are looking at doing our own vows. Can anyone recommend any theatre readings I could use that would work well. I have looked online and only get the generic Shakespeare ones
Many thanks! X

My brain instantly leapt to One Hand One Heart from West Side Story, maybe something like that or were you thinking a little less literal?

I always think Country House from Follies is the best snapshot of marriage, but perhaps not what you're going for...

There's a great song from 'Company' about getting married. You can dazzle the congregation with your vocal dexterity too.
Now where is it? Ah yes, it's called 'Getting Married Today' so . . .
Oh.

Many thanks! X I'd recommend looking at Victor Hugo.

If I ever got married (which I never will) I'd have "It Should Have Been Me" by Yvonne Fair playing, and a massive drag queen in a wedding dress storming into the congregation lip syncing to it.
That's probably just me though 😬

Do you know what ever since he proposed I have had it niggling in my head to want to sing this as the people come into the ceremony room!
Quite apt as well as he asked me to marry him with a pocket watch he got inscribed with "marry me a little?"

Well duh! Have we all forgot 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do' from 'Mamma Mia'? It's perfect. You can get the congregation to sing along too.

Yes! Remember that woman in Bake Off who tried to represent her forthcoming wedding in shortbread. Disaster!

if you really want to shock the 'congregation' you could have your Fiance start with "I'm getting married in the morning" (Get me to the Church) before you take the mike! Wagner's Wedding March started in the theatre, Lohengrin. We had the Easter Hymn (Intermezzo) from Cavalleria Rusticana (please don't look up how that one ends!).

As we seem to have moved away from spoken(?) vows to songs to sing, I'll suggest one I did on the previous board: "In Whatever Time We Have" from Children of Eden.

"Love Story" musical has a few nice wedding vows (and a line "we're married - so I can now officially be a bitch" as a bonus!) The song is called "On a summer day" or smth like that

I think that "The origin of love" from "Hedwig..." has some fantastic lyrics about love.

My brother managed to get the line "you need someone older and wiser telling you what to do" from SOM into his vows. That might not be the safest path!
