Over the years I've been to many 'one off’s' by Amici Di Verdi, Chelsea Opera Group, Birmingham Opera Group and even a Magic Flute in the grounds of Marble Hill House. In the past couple of years we've started attending performances by the musical colleges in London and I though it would be useful if people shared information on these. The standards are high, the singers promising an the works are not the standard repertoire. AND the price is right.
I'll start: I received this email
I'm emailing as you attended UCOpera's production of La Favorite last March and I have your name down to be notified when tickets are available for this year's production of Verdi's Aroldo.
We would love to see you again at this year's production which is taking place at the Theatre Royal Stratford East this March 20/22/24/25.
Tickets can be bought online www.stratfordeast.com, by calling the box office on 020 8534 0310 or in person at the theatre. See www.ucopera.co.uk for more details.
If people are interested I can did out a review I did for another forum of last years production. Suffice to say we're going back on the 21st -the only night we can make. Tickets are £25 and The Theatre is one of Frank Matcham's gems and was famous for Joan Littlewoods productions in the 60's 'Oh What a Lovely War' etc. about 4 mins slow walk from the station.
Let me know if you'll be there and if you know of any upcoming events.
I hope this thread develops legs.

Here's another interesting night out. www.wiltons.org.uk/whatson/297-dubai-rostov-new-york-scenes-from-contemporary-operaDavid Pountney working with Students of the National Opera Studio should be very interesting. Whilst the other London colleges tend to use a full Ochestra this one is with a Piano. However if you haven't been yet then Wiltons Music Hall is worth travelling for on its own. London's most atmospheric performing space?

The Royal Academy of Music production of Sweeney Todd at Theatre Royal Stratford East last year was very good. Can imagine that their Threepenny Opera will be well worth seeing. Will have to check my teenagers' exam schedules to see if I can safely leave the house on any of those dates. Might have to be providing a shoulder to cry on!

This shouldn't really be in this thread! It's not a one-off as there are four performances: Fri 12 May Curve, Leicester Sun 14 May Symphony Hall, Birmingham Mon 15 May The Lowry, Salford Fri 19 May Royal Festival Hall, Southwark And it's co-produced by at least two "main" companies, the Royal Opera, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Curve.

This is a perfect suggestion, IMO. There's a wealth of stuff going on out there and I pleased to know more about them. Musical Theatre doesn't only happen in the West End and Opera is provided by dozens of companies. I'm delighted to have found this site which has made me aware of some great opportunities that I wouldn't otherwise have known about.

Lifted from another Forum. If you like Opera at the Cinema heres a free day out WITH REFRESHMENTS! to help a Phd student. "I'm a PhD student from King's College London, conducting research in collaboration with the Royal Opera House about how novice respondents ('opera virgins') respond to opera streamed live to cinemas. I'm organising a symposium for the 16th of June at KCL, at which I am bringing together a range of speakers including artists, opera and theatre company representatives and academics to talk about opera in the movies. I'll also be debuting findings from my own research. If anyone is based in or around London and thinks this sounds interesting, please consider RSVPing here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/opera...ts-34277422694And of course, there will be complementary refreshments throughout the day! Cheers everyone, have a nice day and feel free to ask any questions (about the symposium or my research). "

Here’s Showgirls review of a Pop Up Opera production. “I couldn't find a thread for this one but am sure some others here are familiar with this company, which tours to non-traditional venues. Current production is Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto (sung in Italian but with hilarious projected dialogue help - can't say whether it's an exact translation.) I caught this at the Geffrye Museum but there are further dates in the London and general south-east area. I don't think I've ever enjoyed an opera production so much; the smile never left my face for the whole 2 hours 30 duration and at times I was actually grinning broadly or laughing. www.popupopera.co.uk/whats-on

Hackney Empire are presenting Senza Sangue and Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle on 19th September.
I know nothing about the former except that it's been specially composed to be performed as a prior piece. They are taking all the stalls seats out for a 70 piece orchestra. Would be overwhelming in such an intimate theatre. The composer is the conductor of both opera's. Peter Eotvos.
We'll be there.

Two rarities Vaughan Williams Riders to the Sea William Walton Henry V (Narrated arrangement by Christopher Palmer) Midsummer Opera 17th and 19th November St Johns Waterloo. I love the Walton. It's superb music and it works well with the text interpolations from the play (originally Olivier's film.) I went to a top notch Prom performance of this 2 years ago with ASMF conducted by Sir Nev and John Hurt, simply fabulous, in the narration.

Pleased you liked it. I was going to comment on it being the first production I’ve seen in about 20 years with no surtitles to distract. Don’t know anything about the company but it does seem like they went for a mix of new and experienced singers, all of whom had excellent diction. This really helps deliver the text and the laughs were at the right time. Obviously this is Opera in English in a small scale hall (300 seats?) , but it was refreshing. Can’t find a website for the new co but their list of patrons was most impressive and hopefully this is not the last time they visit Wilton’s. Then like the London Omnibus…two come at once! So 7 days later we went to a new reduced production of Eugene Onegin at the Arcola. Again, sung in English. Again, no surttiles. Again, we could understand every word! It has a few cuts but it worked very well. No programme to hand so can’t name the Young singer who played Onegin but he had a lovely unforced voice. Tanya (didn’t need to change that) was not so easy on the ear , but overall it was well cast. If anyone is interested I can find out which cast we saw. Runs until the end of December. www.arcolatheatre.com/event/eugene-onegin/
