Went to In the Locked Room and The Lighthouse double bill at RCM. Both were very well done, but I particularly was struck by The Lighthouse – the increasingly dramatic and inventive music, singing and design worked a treat.

I saw the Lighthouse years ago at the Linbury and loved it.

Went to see the Shadwell Opera production of Oliver Knussen's Where The Wild Things Are at the restored theatre at Ally Pally yesterday afternoon. It was firmly aimed at families with sweets being dished out during the performances and lots of balloons being bounced around the auditorium during the wild rumpus (fancy dress was encouraged but I didn't see any of this). But there were certainly a lot of music students and regular opera goers there too. Very enjoyable and a great setting. I will be looking out for future Shadwell Opera productions.

After Onegin this was scheduled for a 4wk run at the Arcola. I wonder what happened? Normally Opera Upclose have a 4ish week run in a London venue. I hope they are OK financially or perhaps they are trying a new model of working

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama are performing Holst's Savitri and Weir's Blond Eckbert this summer 2023. On a double bill. I don't know these operas, I think the ENO may have done Blond Eckbert some years ago but I didn't see it. The standards at the Guildhall are very high and the prices good at £25. I have ordered a CD of the Holst so if I like it I will go. I have only seen the Guildhall Jazz Big Band and they were really good. Has anyone seen Blond Eckbert and is it any good?

Great thread to revive have a like! Grimebourne at the Arcola looks interesting this summer. www.arcolatheatre.com/grimeborn/Trouble in Tahiti has long been near the top of my desire list. (Is someone here still living in a tree nearby - seem to recall it's a favourite of yours too?)

Trouble is brilliant but it's a very short evening. I can't believe they haven't programmed something to accompany it.
I've booked to see Merry Wives (Grimebourne). It sounds interesting. Good to see Charles Court appearing at this years festival.

I'm definitely going to see Princess Ida. While it's billed as a concert, I'm hoping it will be semi-staged, especially as Simon Butteriss is in the cast & he's not a man who does just standing still & singing! I'm considering Jenufa, though having not been to the Barbican for several years the ticket prices have certainly gone up since the last concert I saw there.

Too late to do a proper review and I'm hitting the road early tomorrow.
But so glad I went to this. John Wilson is a modern great.
Strong cast and chorus, brilliant playing. Whats not to like.
Special kudos for alerting me to this for the member who is permanently off the ground -= do you come down for shows?

The narration, for me. I would have preferred the dialogue was used, but even if it had to be narration then I didn't think it worked as well last night as other semi-staged pieces I've seen done with narration. I see some of the reviewers had reservations about it too.

Went to see Uncovered Opera's Ariadne auf Naxos at Trinity Laban yesterday. It was in a Georgian Room about 50' x 25' with only about 50 people there. Just a piano, well played. The surtitles were to one side so it wasn't easy to view the singers and the titles together. Not one of my favourite operas but it was well done. One of the singers was exceptional, only £10! Trinity Laban took some finding. The entrance is through the courtyard.

The Merry Widow is being performed by the Royal College of Music on 11-16 March 2024. Booking for ordinary folk opens on 31 January. I would think it will be performed to the highest standards.

Excellent thanks for the heads up. Will diarise to book the Merry Widow. Love it and can only recall seeing it during the refurbishment of Covent Garden when the company became peripatetic. IIRC Felicity Lott and Thomas Allen were fantastic at The Shaftesbury Theatre (I'm going to wait a while before checking the details of that happy memory!). I don't think there's a more infectious and thoroughly tuneful tune, than the MW Waltz?
I see I previously made the comment about how buses arrive on this thread; but after waiting donkeys years Glyndebourne are also doing this next summer. They have a new Carmen, as does the ROH! One may be coincidence but two constitute a conspiracy agianst the fan.

The Royal Academy of Music are performing Britten's Albert Herring in March. I've never seen and once fell asleep during Britten's Turn of the Screw it but might give it a go as I know the RAM standards are so high.

The Fairy Queen Hampstead Garden Opera 19 - 28 April including two mattines
I've never seen HGO before but I love a bit Purcell and so have booked. In the Autumn they are doing Onegin - yay. Tchaikovsky and Purcell make me happy.
