Sony Classical is proud to release the highly-anticipated Original London Cast Recording of the hit West End Musical 'Dreamgirls', in a stunning new double-album recorded LIVE at London’s Savoy Theatre. In November 2016 after 35 years and 13 awards (including 6 Tony Awards, 5 Drama desk Awards and 2 Grammy Awards), this brand new production of 'Dreamgirls' finally received its UK premiere. The show stars the sensational American singer and actress Amber Riley as Effie White, and has received unanimous praise from both audience and critics alike.
This definitive album includes the most iconic songs from the musical such as ‘And I am Telling You I’m Not Going’, ‘I Am Changing’, ‘Listen’ and ‘One Night Only’ and is a must-have for all 'Dreamgirls' and musical fans. With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen, the album is produced by composer Henry Krieger and captures the on-stage exhilaration of the original London cast, the 14-piece band and the audience.www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XCD2JG8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488415340&sr=8-1&keywords=Dreamgirls+London

Fab. I wonder why they require a double album though? While there's a considerable amount of music, I'm surprised it can't fit into one CD. Unless they are releasing the entire show, as they did with the Actor's Fund concert version, which would require two CDs.
I guess this would mean that the 2009 US tour which was fully recorded in a studio won't ever be released.

Ah I imagine, by their wording, the audience was a loud one the particular day they were recording.
Slightly hoping, as it is a double CD, that we get a cheeky bonus track or two from Karen and Marisha.

It's Sonia's way of forewarning us there will be a lot of whooping and shouting during the songs.

Impossible to edit out presumably.

If the audience is screaming into the microphones of the actors it is very hard to edit out

The live recording really puts me off, especially in this age of people whooping and screaming for anything and everything. They're just being cheap and saving on recording costs. Not that I really need a fifth recording of the show.... even if it does include the new version of listen.

^ not if the sound feed is taken direct from the mixer desk, I'd think? I don't mind the audience as long as the mixing is done right. The last few live London cast recordings have been just horrendous in terms of mixing: Legally Blonde and Kinky Boots were just so horrendously recorded. The sound quality like it was a third generation copy made from a cassette tape, the echo, the coughing of the audience.. WTH? They couldn't edit out the coughing? Not to mention that these shows are recorded on multiple performances. They didn't have the sense to use the cough-free track? On another note, the Woman in White was recorded live, and unless you read the booklet, you wouldn't know. The Actors Fund Dreamgirls has a rather enthusiastic whooping audience. I don't mind that, provided that the sound is crisp and clear.

That's correct. I think a special shoutout needs to go to those live German cast recordings that came out in the 90s and early 200s. Rebecca, Tanz der Vampire, Elisabeth..all fabulously recorded live, be it with the most obnoxious audience.
Given that it's produced by the composer, let's hope that this version of Dreamgirls is well recorded. The movie soundtrack is absolutely great, especially compared to the half-ass effort they did with the original Broadway cast recording, which is a strange mix and edits of songs that could be used as singles not associated with the show.

I don't mind some of the Actors Fund recording, but if Billy Porter could re record some of his vocals, i wish Heather Headley had. Her voice cracks so many times it's painful. 'Ain't No Party' aint pretty to listen to.

Let's hope if/when this transfers to Broadway they'll make s cast recording, NYC tend to do far fewer live recordings, if any, that I can recall. Of course, my first preference is that this live recording is listenable

Went to see this yesterday matinee after our cancellation when 4 cast members were sick! Amber was indisposed and Marisha was on as Effie - really stunning!! I was waiting for the squeals and whoops in "I'm not going" but everyone sat, listened and then went mad - result!

Of course, my first preference is that this live recording is listenable I doubt it, especially if they transfer it with Amber, which this entire production is built around. Gone are the days when we have multiple cast recordings of the same show- certainly the case with cast members transferring over their roles. I think that when this transfer to Broadway they'll take Amber, Liisi, Joe Aaron and the fab gent who plays James Thunder Earley. Sort of pull what Cameron did with opening Miss Saigon with Eva, Alisdair, Jon Jon and Rachelle.

I went on Wednesday night and it was a big ol' understudy affair - all four of the Dreams were understudies - Marisha for Effie, Lily for Deena, Jocasta for Lorrell and Carly for Michelle, plus Durone Stokes for CC.
Marisha blew my mind. I think I actually preferred her to Amber and I never thought I'd say that, her voice manages to be so clean and pure, while still having all of that pained grit. Stunning. It was great seeing the audience just get more and more behind her throughout act 1 until AIATY when they just erupted.
Also, loved Lily's Deena, which I appear to be in the minority on. Never had any trouble understanding what she was saying or singing. Thought she nailed the portrayal, it was only during the big belts of Listen with Marisha that I felt she was a little out of her depth. But... most would be out of their depth trying to match her!
It's just such a FANTASTIC SHOW, regardless of who's on though. Was on cloud nine when we left the theatre.

I just booked tickets via TodayTix for the matinee next Wednesday. £39.50 each for Row H 12-13 in Stalls, seems like an absolute bargain that I just couldn't leave there! I also used a referral code I picked up on here a while back and forgot to use, so whoever FQWDM is, it's much appreciated!
So ridiculously excited!

How far in advance does TodayTix allows you to book with a discount like that? (And is that discount code still valid?). I'm eyeing a Saturday matinee in May and wouldn't mind paying if it's that deal in the stalls over having to queue first thing in the morning for day seats.
