I dont think Amber Riley will be a problem. Personally i dont think its that big a role. Yes, And I am Telling You is a big number but I am Changing isnt anything like it. Apart from that she hardly sings in the second half.
As long as she doesnt turn into another Jennifer Holiday. She is amazing on the OBC recording, but now when she sings it she sounds more like a parody of the song, WAY too much grunting and ooh ooos!

Slightly concerned she has two stand bys she's sharing the role with.. Says it all really. If I get some girl off the X Factor who's never acted before instead of AR I will be FURIOUS!!

TBH I don't even think Holiday sounds half as good live as she does on the recording. If you really want to get an appreciation of just how thrilling, and shocking really, her performance was, you need to listen to some of the sound desk recordings that are made of the earlier performances. There are recordings of the tryouts in Boston, the opening night on Broadway and one of her final performance. The audience's reaction is quite unbelievable, and her performance just sounds quite unbelievable and theatre history in the making.
There's the infamous Tony Awards performance as well, which is compulsory on the playlist of all gay video bar in the US.
Re the London standbys, I think it will be really easy to avoid them bar any sicknesses, as the producers have been very clear when they will be going on. I am rather excited to see all three of them. I wouldn't be surprised if there is at least one or two other "understudies" tucked in the ensemble.

Out of those 5, I haven't heard of any of them. lol.
Is an alternate used to give the role more 'kudos' and therefore publicity, rather than the demands of the role?
How do we know this is actually selling well?

Didn't Ibanabo Jack play Serena in Legally Blonde in the West End?
Slightly disappointed in the casting. Whilst I am sure they will be great, I have not heard of any of them and none of them make me particularly excited to see the show more than I already am. If they wanted to sell some more tickets, they may of screwed themselves over, especially with the casting of Deena, which is a role made for a star (hello Beyoncé!)
Baz has also tweeted that a new song is to be written for the show, top of Act II, sung by The Dreams.

danieljohnson14She played Pilar in Legally Blonde and seemed quite good. I am surprised though that there aren't any more names! I would've liked to have seen somebody well known in the role of Deena and/or Curtis!

Also, Ibinabo Jack is in The Bodyguard at the moment? Must mean she's leaving that then?

When I don't know the cast very well I always look forward to it a little more, as I know that out of everyone who auditioned, including well known people, they fit the role the best, which is what theatre is all about, creating new stars and giving roles to those who will shine in them. I'm sure the show will be fabulous!

I've seen Ms. Jack as Nikki in The Bodyguard. Very nice voice. I've seen Joe in a concert and the boy can sing. It won't be difficult to believe how Effie and Dina both fall for him.
I was listening to the opening of Act 2 the other day and it's literally every song in Act 1 put in a montage, and barely even rearranged. It'll make sense that the top of Act 2 has a new "single" for the Dreams. In fact, they should totally record it and release it as such!

I wonder why the clammer for star names. Usually a production is criticised for having big names yet in this case people seem less excited about it because there isn't enough with just the one. People may not have heard of some of these actors but they have all done stuff and are no doubt talented performers and probably better than some of the star casting people had in mind.

Totally agree. They have Amber as their "name" (and her two alternates even though I - as a non-Brit - have never heard of them). I'm pleased they seem to have gone for talent over name for the rest of the cast.

I am a Brit and have never heard of them. I really wouldn't class them as names They aren't names hence why Amber is the lead and they are the alternates. They've been on The Voice & X Factor. I would've quite liked to have seen someone better known as Deena, like a well known singer. I defiantly like names in theatre

Well, if nobody gets a chance to prove themselves in leading parts, there wouldn't be any new "names" down the line, would there?

Well, if nobody gets a chance to prove themselves in leading parts, there wouldn't be any new "names" down the line, would there? Yes exactly. And besides, they may not be 'names' but the majority have a wealth of experience under them. I got one am thrilled. But I've made my stance of celebs in the theatre known several times on here.

Great to see unknown actors get their breaks and no doubt they will deliver. The producer, Sonia Friedman, after the debacle of producing the star vehicle of Sheridan Smith in Funny Girl must have thought I'm not going through that again!
