I just tried to catch up on the TV coverage. Sat through Hamilton (confirmed I won't be going to see it), Catherine Tate being not that amusing & a trailer for a bunch of musicals then it started on the awards & the first one was Best Family & Entertainment. So I can't even see Mischief Theatre failing to win Best New Comedy. Gave up. The individual awards are up on the OLT YouTube channel - Best New Comedy

I’ve just caught up on the tv coverage of this. I really enjoyed the performances by Jamie, 42nd Street and Girl from the North Country. Didn’t really understand the hype around Hamilton from that opening. The Joseph performance was a great way to end in my opinion (currently reading the ALW book too!). New presenter next year please!

Overall I think it was a successful year for the Oliviers, a shame that Romantics Annonymous and Grinning Man got shut out (its always nice to see as many new eligible shows get nominations if they are worthy and I think the consensus is that they are)
While Hamilton picked up the most awards it doesnt feel like it did a complete sweep like Matilda and Curious Incident (and Potter) did in their years. Surprising to hear their performance isnt wowing people like it did on the Tonys? Im surprised they've won olivier and tony for choreography when i just remember a lot of knee sliding when i saw it?
I was really hoping that John would pick up best actor for Jamie, I really think he deserved it (im actually surprised the Oliviers didnt show, Jamie, any love since they're always banging on about NEW BRITISH MUSICALS and yet one comes along that isn't a flop (Mrs Hendersons Presents, Made in Dagenham, Bend It)) I also thought Andrew Garfield really had it in the bag for Angels (I hadn't seen the other performances so cant compare but I thought he was transformative)
I expected Young Frankenstein to sadly walk away empty-handed, perhaps if Ross Noble was still in the show I thought he could have snagged his award if Hamiltons 3(!!!!!) nominations split the vote. Whyyyyyyy was five guys named moe no in the musical revival category? did we debunk that?!
I like that we have dance and opera awards, im not hugely clued in into their worlds but i like that we recognize them!
No doubt Bat out of Hell will do very well next year.

No doubt Bat out of Hell will do very well next year. If you mean for the Olivier Awards, then it won't be nominated next year as it was eligible for this year's with only one nomination for Best Sound Design for Gareth Fry (to which he lost to Nevin Steinberg for Hamilton).

Also, Girl From the North Country should of won Achievement in Music in my opinion. Hamilton is great, but it felt very much "Lin is in the catagory, Lin must win" kind of situation, whereas the music for Girl was really outstanding, both from a Orchestral and Vocal perspective. The problem with that category is that it's a bit like nominating an apple, a pear, a satsuma, and a mango for an award for Best Banana. This year, there were two nominations for original scores, one for orchestrations/vocal arrangements, and one for an orchestra. All four were outstanding, but they aren't all the same thing. As much as I loved the arrangements in 'Girl from the North Country', I think I'd probably have given the award to one of the nominees whose work involved original composition - and as much as I loved 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie', as writing, between it and 'Hamilton', there's no contest. I always thought the Achievement in Music Award was a bit like the Best British Film Award at the BAFTAs, ie to highlight a show that might be forgotten but if its going to go to the winner of best Musical then what's the point.

The finale to celebrate Joseph was brilliant. Joe mcelderry is one of the best Joseph’s I’ve seen. I don’t know why he gets so much criticism. He has a lovely voice and is brilliant live in his own shows, and is one of the most successful X factor contestants. Side note, knew Hamilton would sweep the awards.

I agree with above post about Joe McElderry. Definitely best Joseph I have seen. Thought the Oliviers was a lot better than last year but they should have picked a better presenter than Catherine Tate. Standout musical performance was The Girl From The North Country. Couldn’t understand how Hamilton gained so many awards after that performance. Great Joseph finale to end the show.

But is Girl From The North Country truly "musical theatre"? It sounds like a play with songs to me. Very different medium when it comes down to it.

Just watching this on ITV on a reasonably large TV screen and 42nd Street looked like a Lego movie because the picture quality was so terrible. Did someone say it’s higher quality on YouTube?
Based on the show so far, I would book to see Jamie. He was struggling a bit with his upper range but I thought the performance was fizzing with life. Hamilton on the other hand, still leaves me cold.
+1 to whoever said it’s lovely to see people who are thrilled to win. Sheila Atim made me whoop and cry.

Its interesting too, Shirley said backstsge she didn't expect her or Shirley to win because of the dispute as to whether it was a musical or play, she assumed they would fall through the cracks and not win because of that.

I stand firmly by my stance that it's a play with music, but that doesn't mean I'm not hugely entertained by their having a nominee for Best Actor in a Musical, and it's a man who doesn't sing at all in the show (that I remember, maybe he's in a full company number or two?)!

I can't lie, Shelia, Shirley, Jack and Debbie were the only performers in that show that I remember, I couldn't tell you a single thing the nominated actor did.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember Ciaran Hinds got supporting actor nomination(s) when he played Sam Byck in Assassins at the Donmar in the 90s, so not the first time he's been recognised for not singing much in a musical.

Obviously the agreement with MasterCard means that even in a lame belated apology for a huge embarrassing dead-fish-slap-in-the-face of a mistake, they STILL have to put the "with MasterCard" in.

I'm not sure why I bother with this show. ITV presents it like it's the London Musicals Awards and the performance segments come across really badly, as theatre on screen always does. I mainly watched this year to see if anyone had a go at Letts. It was left to a dignified tweet from Bamigboye to satisfy me on that.

Stick my neck out early here and say next year will be all about: Angels In America, The Ferryman, Follies and Hamilton. I can see Paddy Considine giving Nathan Lane a run for his money and Brid Brennan getting best featured actress. I stuck my neck out and got it 100% right, give me a gold ⭐️ .

..... we must have wildly differing views of what 100% means, seeing as Considine didn't really give anyone a run for their money, least of all the unnominated Lane, and Bríd Brennan - though nominated - ultimately lost out to Denise Gough...

I'm giving Girl From the North Country a listen for the first time since seeinf the show. It angers me even more now it didn't win the Music catagory, its pretty stunning.
Both Shelia and Shirley were incredible when I saw the show, possibly two of my favourites of the past year. But listening Tight Connection to My Heart and Forever Young are the exact reasons they deserved to win, just incredible. Stunning.

For me it was Slow Train. That's when Shirley Henderson's character came to life and it was lovely. Just a great performance end to end in a tricky role.

Just catching up with the coverage today, as I’ve been away for the last few days.
I loved the Joseph tribute at the end, and it was lovely to see Jason Donovan get a good reaction when he came on stage. I’d read that he’d had some vocal problems which has affected his speaking and singing voice- that must be the worst nightmare for any performer.

Don't know if this has been mentioned already, but just caught up with the full ITV coverage after trying to play the voice-over artist, a moment of genius clicked. Zoe Wanamaker. Genius on the part of Inside no 9 for casting her in "And the Winner Is..." one of my favourite episodes and made the Oliviers all the more enjoyable to watch knowing her role in I.N.9.
