Not great weather for May but still enjoyed my first theatre trip of the year to Chichester, for the matinee of Forty Years On. The train journey might be slower than before but at least there are no strikes at present and the scenery is so lovely that I can happily spend the whole trip gazing at some of my favourite walking country. When I haven't been there for a while (about 6 months since my last trip of 2016), I can enjoy wandering round the shops and as for the theatre aspect itself, there is always a large and appreciative audience in both houses, which makes for a good atmosphere. The whole experience feels so much more civilised and relaxed than my usual theatre trips to London.

Has theatre ever been part of 'youth culture'? Admittedly I'm not 35 yet (got a couple of weeks to go!) but it certainly wasn't when I was a teenager and I don't recall my elders talking about it being so. Music, dancing, and various substances were more the thing.... |

It's my son's birthday and I got him a card with ketchup bottles on the front that says "MAY THE SAUCE BE WITH YOU" and wrote qoSlIj DatIvjaj inside. Then had it explained to me that Star Wars (his birthday is May the Fourth) and Star Trek/Klingon were two entirely different things.

Woke up in Cardiff, put in the best part of a day's work in Caerphilly, sat in various traffic jams on the M4, enjoyed musical Magic at the RAH and got home just as the church clock struck midnight to sleep back in my own bed in Warwickshire tonight. (Voted by post!)

I drove 850 miles (1367 km) today and have 1990 miles (3200 km left to go) to get home to Rhode Island from Arizona. Solo driver but somehow feel I'm incapable of driving in UK on upcoming trip. Why? Reviews I have read on rental car agencies have scared the bejeezes out of me.

A couple of weeks ago the council put up signs in my street suspending parking on 4th May. Nothing happened all day yesterday so late in the afternoon I phoned up the number on the signs to see what was supposed to be going on and the person I spoke to said the suspension was booked for the 4th and the 5th. Overnight someone has gone out and put cones along the road, but there are going to be many people who think the parking suspension has ended and will be leaving their cars parked. I'm now waiting to see what happens. Entertaining confusion, I hope.

Reviews I have read on rental car agencies have scared the bejeezes out of me. I have been visiting the UK regularly for about 25 years now, but I do not dare to drive on the wrong side of the road. Consequently all my travels (outside short trips restricted to London) are wrapped around places I can reach by train. I would love to visit Cornwall some time, but it seems too complicated to do by public transport and I do not dare to drive there. So Cornwall has to do without me. Sigh. So don't feel bad. I do like driving in the US though. Speed restrictions mean that everything is very relaxed there. Driving on the German autobahns really IS survival of the fittest and I hate it with a passion. |

You guys, driving in the UK is a breeze. You get used to the left side of the road thing almost instantly. The only issues are the roundabouts and having to shift gears with the wrong hand - but you can rent an automatic and solve that one.

I've never driven outside the UK but the parking brake being on the wrong side would probably confuse the hell out of me and I'd keep reaching down to grab the door every time I stopped. At least the accelerator and brake pedals are always the same way round. I don't know why people struggle with roundabouts. It's just like pulling out at any other junction, except the traffic is slower and only approaches from one side. The only issue is huge multi-lane roundabouts where the lanes are marked with destinations that don't make sense to anyone from outside the area and which are covered by other vehicles until it's too late to see them anyway. But normal roundabouts are easy. |

I once visited a Welsh friend who kindly let me try driving his car. Let's just say he aged ten years in ten minutes and I never tackled the British roads again. My major problem was the wrong layout of the car. I kept forgetting that the driver's seat is on the right side and the car extended a long way to the left - often missed parked cars on the left side with only an inch to spare. If anything, I might rather take my own car across the channel which at least has the measurements I'm comfortable with. But I'm still hoping to eventually befriend a Brit who will chauffeur me around Cornwall someday  |

I'll volunteer for Cornwall duty one of these days. I've no sense of direction so we may end up in Devon, but I'll give it a go.

You know when you shouldn't speak to soon? Ok my day sucked a bit...then I went for a lunchtime walk.
I was walking along and a man walked towards me, I was against the railings of a bridge, and I decided 'no I don't need to move out of your way, I'm against this wall' he purposefully walked right up to me, as if expecting me to move or something, when I didn't he halted in front of me (well within personal space) and still wouldn't move (I'm half trapped against railings on a bridge) I say 'excuse me' (more pointedly than politely at this point) Man responds with "f*** you you ugly bitch" and to my surprised "What?" I got a "I'll f*** you up"
Now in broad daylight in a busy area, that's obnoxious but luckily not that threatening or scary. But still...

Enjoying a day out of the office - work allow us a volunteering day every year, so today we are helping to paint an old nursery in Walthamstow that is being converted into a community theatre centre (The CentrE17). The local Nando's, Pizza Express and Turtle Bay (Caribbean restaurant) have provided lunch. We're just waiting for our first coat of paint to dry.

HORRIBLE Be sure to have a good rest this evening and do something nice or that you enjoy to relax This sort of malicious incident can leave one very upset and shaken It could have been a person with mental illness or learning disability etc. one never knows these things But can leave you nonetheless feeling distressed and upset and angry with people and world at large in general Have a nice weekend |
