Next time internet. I've done it once before (obviously I wouldn't recommend this for a second-hand car) and it was the easiest purchase of anything ever. You were very lucky the website you chose was set up to sell you a single car in the middle of the row. Otherwise you may have had to buy a pair or something less suitable on a car lot further back. That took me minutes longer than it should have! I'm still trying to think up chess jokes. Actually, I needed fewer pieces of identification than I did to famously enter the Victoria Palace Theatre last month.

Today I learnt that Hello Kitty is British. I honestly had no idea. Is this something everyone knew but me?

I'm afraid you've been had my dear. You should have done what @baemax suggested and gone to Halfords. (Or married someone different. Calls himself a northerner, does he?) ...and round the back by all accounts...

It *shouldn't* be normal, but alas, it is.

It astonishes me that the US can have so many shootings while other countries don't, and they look at the fact that the US has easy availability of guns and the other countries don't and say "no, that can't be the problem". And they say "we need guns to defend ourselves in situations like this" despite the fact that they already have guns and they clearly aren't working as a defence.

I've only lived in not particularly gun-loving parts of the US, so I'm sharing a lot of that sentiment myself. I've never even TOUCHED a gun nor seen one anywhere except on law enforcement, on my grandfather's bookshelf, or in my boss' office (a BB gun; long story). But even then, as you can see, gun culture is everywhere. I don't understand it. When I visited Australia a year ago I felt so safe there! I figured if any crime were committed against me I at least wouldn't be shot. Which is a really messed-up perspective.
About 8 years ago, my then-roommate and I were visiting her friend in Winchester and my roommate was talking about having recently gone to a rock concert, and offhandedly mentioned metal detectors at the entrance. Her friend said, "Oh yeah, you don't want knives in there in case people get drunk." My roommate said, "No, more like a gun..." And her friend just said, "Oh," because it hadn't occurred to her.
UGGGHHHH! I hate this. I hate guns.
Edit: I'm also really glad I graduated from high school well before Columbine.

Yeah, every time I've been to London, I've also thought, "Well, maybe I'll get stabbed, but at least I won't be shot!"
Although you do get tourists here who've never been to a big city who think Times Square is a hellmouth. Which it is, but that's because of all the other tourists and weird costumed characters. Generally it's pretty safe, gun-wise.

Can anyone recommend simple software for cutting short videos? I'm currently trying to get some videos I took at the Improvathon last week (videoing was allowed before anyone starts muttering about illegality) into a tweetable format. I've managed to convert them to .mp4 but I'd like to be able to cut some of them down a bit & Googling for possible software doesn't seem to be getting me very far. Thanks in advance.

We’ve been hit by a cyclonic system here in Franz Josef in New Zealand, so currently hunkered down in the hostel lounge listening to the wind and rain. Flights to the glaciers were cancelled and so is our transalpine train ride tomorrow. Did manage a walk in the glow worm tunnel and a visit to the Kiwi house this morning before the storm hit.

By untangling my headphones, I've lost all sound. Doesn't real life sound awful? I untangled my clacker balls once in the mid 70s and they’ve been completely useless ever since. (Remember them?) Re sound: it’s all relative. After listening to Idina’s Christmas album through your headphones for example, real life starts to sound heavenly again. Anyway, moral of the story. If it’s tangled, leave it be.

It's decided, I will be in London for Easter. 🐣 Now I have booked: Kinky Boots, Chicago, Wicked and Strictly Ballroom. I have one slot left for a show, which I will decide on there. No show for the Sunday but then I will do a pub crawl instead. Pubs seem to be a big deal in the UK! Then as it will be warmer this time I plan to take some fun walking tours to do more sightseeing. Looking forward to this trip. 🇬🇧

Arrived at London today, delayed one hour, but got here safe and sound. Favourite part of the journey was when a middle-aged couple sitting directly in front of us started to listen to me talking to my boyfriend (in Polish). At one point 'the wife' whispered audibly to 'the husband': "Swedish?" To which 'the husband' responded:"Balkans, I think".
Nah, just Polish... It would've been nicer if they just asked where we're from. We could've had a nice short chat!

I'm turning out to be the worst team captain ever. Fell asleep before I was due to leave for my fencing match and am now running late, not to mention I'm going to get there an have an equipment crisis.

Interesting experience today. I went to an afternoon dance show today in Brussels. I wondered how many there might be in the audience, but it was nearly packed out (about 250). Waiting to enter I noticed a lot of very young children (4-6) with parents, small groups, etc. I presumed therefore that the performance was aimed at children. It was not. It was quite good with good choreography, synchronicity, music, lighting, costumes, etc. For the hour the children were well behaved, but there were odd conversations – often triggered by stage activity. I imagine most was discussion about what was going on. I must admit I didn’t have a clue (though I still liked it). While the children could have been quieter, overall they were quite good. I suppose it is half term. However, I wondered what the children made of it all. Did they enjoy it? Will it leave a positive impression? Will they respond positively if told they are going again? I honestly don’t know. However, I’m sure some parents will have some explaining to do on the way home!

Took myself along to the Charles II exhibtion at the Queen’s Gallery today. Smashing stuff! And the free audio guide was extra special- none of those commentaries that go on and on for ever... Highly recommended. (Am looking forward to the Charles I one now at the RA.)

I’m glad I saw the Royal Academy Charles 1 exhibition a couple of weeks ago. This one at the Queen's kind of finishes it off.

I particularly loved the four Holbeins, tucked away in the corner of the large room... Did you catch the recent BBC4 three parter on the history of the Royal Collection? Fascinating! It featured some of the stuff on show today, like the Exeter Salt. Must be available on iPlayer, I reckon.
