Talking of birds - I have the perfect outline of a red kite in flight on my bedroom window! It looks like an xray. I can see the skeleton, four 'fingers' on the end of the wing tips, the beak and the shapes of its feathers on the spreadeagled wings. Thankfully, I wasn't in the room when it happened - this is a common occurrence round here and it scares the bejangles out of us when it does. Each time we expect to see a dead bird on the ground, but they usually just sit on the windowsill looking dozy until Waggy Tibs goes outside and scares them into flying off again! We currently have a pigeon outline on our kitchen window. At least, it looks like a pigeon, we didn't see it happen. Given how over-pigeoned we are around here it's a pretty safe bet. We don't get anything as interesting as red kites.

3rd day of no power here in Rhode Island after storm. Supposed to be back on by Thursday. Sucks as I work remotely and have been having to wonder around looking for power and internet. I want a shower. Really need one to

Halloween in London ... the place with the bloodiest history - The Tower of London, went to the Ceremony Of The Keys last night, one of those free things to do in London that I've never got around to doing before. Spooky! But out on a school night = me, knackered....

Will be glad when this weeks over. A bizarre mix of great stuff, puzzling stuff and awful stressful problems. Not quite sure whether good outweighs bad

A log day (not over yet...death by National Express coach) but much neeeded day out in London. Unexpected jaunt to The Bridge theatre for Young Marx. But the main reason was to meeting with Susan Brown, to interview her for my research. Wonderful lady, funny and smart as you'd expect. And much needed boost to my Angels endeavours. And a few laughs about that ridiculous play as well.
But right now this coach is bloody freezing. Anyone got a blanket?

Have a look down the coach aisle. Near the front there should be a red tube marked "Fire Blanket." "Fire" stands for "Freezing? It revives everyone." Just stroll down, give the flap a sharp yank and take the blanket. The driver won't mind at all - in fact I'm sure he'll say "just what are you doing with that" to be sure you know, in a very friendly way, loudly, over the engine, so you can hear. "Woman found on side of M4 wrapped in Fire blanket"

I thought you had to grab the fire blanket and set light to it to keep the whole coach warm

I've never had a bus catch fire but I was involved in a bus crash once, as a passenger on the bus. Some traffic lights changed to green as we approached so we went straight on, and then a car on the right ran through his lights and was struck side on by the bus. The bus was slightly scratched. One of the wheels fell off the car.

Wheels fall off my cars without any help from buses (seriously 2 separate cars had it happen)
I haven't been in any bus crashes *touch wood* but I've been in a couple of broken down ones...memorably as a kid en route from Blackpool to Cardiff (we knew how to party) and spent nearly half the night on the bus somewhere god only knows where!

Many years ago, I was on a double decker bus when it crashed into an errant milk float... that was messy.

They never explicitly say it in driving lessons but one of the first rules of driving is NEVER CUT UP ANYTHING BIGGER THAN YOU. (Also I can strongly recommend not being in a French car going up against a German car, but that was just really unfortunate rather than full-on catastrophic.)

I've recently been passing some free time watching dashcam videos on YouTube, mainly from the US. There have been quite a few where the person with the camera can see that they're about to be involved in an accident and has let it happen because they have right of way. For example, one person saw a truck trying to merge just ahead of him and instead of easing off to give it room he made a point of staying level with the rear of the truck so he'd get knocked by it, all the time chortling in glee over the fact he was going to get another driver in trouble.
Right of way doesn't exist on UK roads and if you pulled that sort of stunt and then gave the recording to the police you'd probably face charges of dangerous driving, mainly because "being a world-class megatwat" isn't a recognised offence. I'd love to know how those non-accidents worked out for the cammers because I can't imagine the US police would be any more lenient over allowing a crash to happen for sh*ts and giggles than ours would be. It's a shame they don't show that on video as well.

While a dashcam is a heartily sensible thing to have in your car, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the rise in dashcams leads to a rise in accidents. I fear people will be more confident that the person in the wrong will be punished thanks to the evidence, rather than making more effort to avoid any accident because they can't trust that a game of "he-said-she-said" will result in fair or correct decisions.

M&S have reduced their Halloween range, so it was only right to buy some 'Zombie Owls' for 50p like the mature sensible adult I am.
