Just wondering if there is anyone like me who collects cast recordings of each musical they see despite if they loved the show or not?!! I like to have the physical CD rather than just a download too! It annoys me when a show doesn't release a cast recording as it ruins my collection a bit! I can't be the only one right?!!

I would love it if the moderators changed the title of this thread to 'soundtracks.'
Yes I do love collecting the CDs.

Me too! I've slowed down in recent years, but I have a fairly decent collection. Was thrilled to have the physical copy of Falsettos in my hands last week!

I've often bought cast recordings just because I've seen a show, and then I end up looking at them later and cannot for the life of me remember what compelled me to do it. No matter what I think of them I can't bring myself to get rid of any.

That's why I said it because some people on here think it matters, when it really doesn't.

No, it shouldn't be changed, it's fine as it is. There's a large contingent of people who understand that "soundtrack" is technically wrong in this context but, as language evolves, it is nonetheless acceptable use, and I think the joke is at the expense of the people who feel quite strongly that as a cast recording is *not* the same as a soundtrack, the term "soundtrack" really shouldn't be used in place of "cast recording".

Re the collection, I used to buy everything I'd seen but that stopped with The Lion King and Mary Poppins which I knew I would never play, ever. The latest to fall into that category is School of Rock. I liked the show but there's no way I need to hear that score again.

The official policy on here is that people who call cast recordings soundtracks are banned permanently
Maybe we should amend our board rules accordingly...

I'm one of these people haha. We also had a couple of good threads going on the subject of cast recordings here, in case you were interested : www.theatreboard.co.uk/thread/216/collectors-items-cds-etcwww.theatreboard.co.uk/thread/346/cast-recordings-collections

The only cast recordings I have are Lazarus and (although its more a studio album than a recording of a show) If You Kiss Me, Kiss Me by Jane Horrocks.
I also have the Underworld soundtrack to Danny Boyle's Frankenstein, which I enjoy but don't play that often (its very different to the stuff on their 'normal' albums) : I would have liked to have a copy of Goldfrapps soundtrack to Medea from a couple of years back but it doesn't look like that'll get a (official anyway) release any time soon.
A shame more stage producers don't try to use more contemporary music (and musicians) in their productions.

I think the only one I've ever bought on a CD is Wicked, but I do listen to a lot on Spotify and the like.
My collecting habit is my tickets and programmes instead of the soundtracks.

I knew there would be debate on using cast recordings rather than soundtracks!

I indecently collect cast recordings (as well as audience recordings!) of shows I've seen and not seen. Having said that, I would say for the last ten years or so my entire collection has been digital. Last time I bought a CD was when Dress Circle was still open. While I totally migrated to digital, I would buy select CDs from the shop for nostalgic reasons and to support the business.
I miss Dress Circle. A little piece of me died when that store shut down.

I miss Dress Circle. A little piece of me died when that store shut down. Me too. And I got a lot of signed CDs I don't seem to get any more e.g. Divorce Me Darling, (signed by Liliane Montevecchi, Linzi Hateley, Marti Webb, and the late, great Sandy Wilson) anyone?

In the beginning I thought that the theatre cafe could be a semi successor..But I honestly just get an obnoxious vibe whenever I set foot in there. I never actually spent too much time there, every time I went in I felt a bit uneasy with the vibe.
It's funny that at one point when Dress Circle started struggling, I suggested to one of the gents who ran the place (I forgot his name..but he was SO. MUCH. FUN. Older gent with white hair and glasses. Mike?) that it should be turned into a theatre pub/cafe meets the current shop.

The signed CDs were great. I got Anything Goes signed by John Barrowman and Sally Ann Triplett and Zorro signed by the leads. I don't buy as many CDs as I used to, especially when I don't expect to see the show in question live (like short-lived Broadway runs), but I still buy CDs of shows I've seen live / expect to see live / heard what I liked online. I still look upon my CD collection as some sort of reference library.

I used to lots of the CD signings at DC. They were great fun. Longest queue ever was for Sweeney Todd with Michael Ball.

I'm not sure if we're thinking of the same guy, but I remember a white haired older guy (Murray??) who was decidedly selective about who he was nice to. I suspect he favoured the younger, cuter clientele! I went to that shop for years and years (and to its previous form in Covent Garden when I was younger and... well maybe not...) and spent ridiculous amounts of money on CDs and a number of 'gifts'. I don't recall any member of staff ever acknowledging me as one of their regulars. I always found the atmosphere in there rather cliquey and intimidating. I can't say I miss the place, and my wallet certainly doesn't!

Not Murray. I think Murray was mainly downstairs in the basement and handled web orders. The guy I'm talking about mainly worked weekends. He was snarky ol' queen and we had some great banter together every now and then.

The DC guys are still around. I quite often see them in the audience of west end musicals.
