I've just become completely obsessed with the cast recording of this show (after seeing it on Sky Arts), I never considered it my type of show before but I love it! Did anyone see it originally, note the reviews weren't exactly stellar?

I did, and it was one of the best shows of 2013 for me. Gutted they closed so early and I never had a chance to revisit it, but it was one of the most moving and powerful stories for me, and I am still listening to the songs from it. It's a pity they excluded the song called "From Here To Eternity" from both video and audio recordings, as it was a good one...
I know the show was not flawless and I myself could criticise quite a few things about it, but I just loved it with all my heart.

I adored it. I saw it 3 times. The first was by accident, I passed the theatre looking for something else, popped in and asked if they had any offers and snapped up a day seat. It had just opened and this was about 2 in the afternoon so not a good sign for sales! I didn't like the spoiler at the start and was glad they changed that. I saw it once more in the normal run then booked for closing night as soon as it was announced (I seem to remember it moving too?).
I don't know what I love about it but I do. The whole thing, all the characters and songs. I happened to sit by the grandparents of one of the cast who is now in Evita last week which was nice.
As above it is a shame that the CD and DVD aren't full recordings but at least we have them, a lot more than some shows get!

Yes! I really enjoyed it and thought it deserved to do better. I loved the choreography in particular.
A quick peek at the trusty Spreadsheet tells me that it was my 2nd favourite show of 2014 (behind Miss Saigon, with which many easy parallels can be drawn).

I've still got it on my Sky box, they showed it on Sky Arts some time ago. I went with one of the Whats On Stage outings; got a post show talk with Tim Rice and, from vague memory, there was a discussion as to the set, which for me seemed out of place. The boxing scene in particular stays in my mind, with the ropes being held by cast. I do remember they had a lot of merchandise on sale - the flower things around your neck etc. Must admit, I didn't love it but I did really like it. Pop round one night and watch with me - I'll supply popcorn  |

I saw this and enjoyed it a lot, warts and all.
This is one musical that should've gone through a comprehensive lab process and tried out beforehand.

I quite enjoyed it, too. Thought the second act was much stronger and had the better songs. Would be nice to see it again in a reworked fashion.

I liked the score, the choreography, some of the performances, but for me the script was terrible. All I took away from it was the lead female having too many std's from sleeping her way through the ranks of Company G.

He really surprised me, strong US accent, matinee idol good looks and a very strong voice, I was very impressed! He was also exec producer on the Daniel Radcliffe film 'Imperium', he's certainly a talented guy. |

I only saw it on DVD. It could definitely do with some adjustments, but I did like it a lot. Especially the second act was quite strong imo. As mentioned above, the fact that Tim Rice was involved in it made them decide to go straight to the West End, while it would have been much better to do an out of town try out first. Maybe they'll rework it and do a tour? If the tour does well it might have a shot at coming back to the West End.

I saw it the first week of previews and was totally disappointed. Wooden acting, especially by Darius. The women were all sluts and Darius had absolutely no chemistry with anyone. Never expected the beach scene to be great but terrible I was not expecting. You walked out of the theatre and every song was gone from your head. Actually none of the actors impressed me which is why I was surprised that RD Wilson is now Aladdin. Darius' height and style actually helped his characterization in Funny Girl but not to the point of wanting to see him in something else.

One of the things I loved most about FHTE was that it had potential to appeal to both old and young. The Prewitt and Lorene relationship I think was something the young could invest in, and the Karen and Warden relationship and the inclusion of sexual health was also an aspect that an older and more emotionally mature, if that's a way of putting in, could emotionally comprehend.

I found it hard to invest in a relationship where the guy is happy for his girlfriend to go and work all night in a whorehouse and then come back to sleep with him.

Also, Lorene herself distinguishes between "screwing" and "making love" - maybe that has something to do with it too. |

Seriously?  When I saw it, there was an audible gasp (and tears from many, including myself) of sympathy when she revealed why she couldn't have children. You walked out of the theatre and every song was gone from your head. Again, "The Boys of 41" - and their photographs - were seared into my memory and many of those around me. Not perfect, but memorable. Must have changed a LOT in previews. Everyone is different too, but still... Agree, I find the whole score memorable, might be because it's all I've listened to for weeks! Dear Evan Hansen has just taken over my time though! |
