I heard they want a War Horse route for this - West End, Broadway, tours and world domination?!!! I wouldn't blame Rufus at all for this. He'd be mad not to maximise its potential and he could do with another certifiable commercial hit after the flak he's had this year over the 3 Olivier productions. |

I guess all of this will depend on the deal with Disney - surely it wont be as big a cash cow for the NT as War Horse, because i'd expect Disney will pocket a majority of any transfer cash? Tho even if they just get a few measly %, if its successful enough that could keep the Olivier in Mediocre productions for another few years.... |

Having seen what can be achieved with horses as puppets, the whale sequence really does have the potential to be quite spectacular. It would also be quite an interesting spin to have the world of Pinocchio full of puppets, where the only person who thinks he's a puppet and yearns to be a real boy, is actually a real boy the whole time. I think you'd need a few human characters like Gepetto, Coachman, Lampwick and maybe the Blue Fairy everything else could be puppets or costumes While Monstro could be amazing, I'd be interested to see how they do the donkey transfomation, that could visually amazing if utterly terrifying if done well Baz mentioned that they're not only using songs from the film but also other songs from the Disney back catalogue as well so I'm interested what songs they're also choosing for the production I remember Baz tweeting this too - but now there are only 4 songs? I wonder what happened... |

This trailer suggests the 5 classics from the movie plus other ‘music and folk songs’
So by the Disney back catalogue we were promised, but also not just 4 songs.

Not exactly, not been much singing so far. Some pepole behind me love it, some people to my left think something is missing. Sadly I agree with the people to my left at the moment, but maybe the second half will be amazing, who knows!

Sadly I agree with the people to my left at the moment, but maybe the second half will be amazing, who knows! I definitely think it was missing something but it equally has a lot going for it. Also stylistically it jumps between feeling like something for the kids and something very akin to Cursed Child. It jumps between feeling like a play with music and a musical (the second half being far more musical). I’ve come out having enjoyed it but there’s some tightening up to do in previews, which I think will result in a stronger piece. I did feel that the whale in act two was slightly lacking from my seat in row B, so intrigued to know if others felt it wasn’t as impressive as it was clearly meant to be. |

Just got in after seeing this. The director gave us a nice speech before curtain up warning us this would be only their second complete run through and so there may be stoppages. But none needed. So Congratulations to the really, really hard working cast on making it all the way through. They work so hard. I wonder if the strange atmosphere tonight was simply 'cos they're all knackered. No critique from me other than to say it's very National Theatre with the songs retaining only a tiny vestige of your typical Disney vibe.

Also where did Chris Jarman go? I swear he was originally announced as Stromboli. He probably dropped out for the same reason he left Fiddler on the Roof over the summer. He'd been announced for both roles before leaving the first one. I think he's ok though, I saw a pic of him at a Press Night. |
