I know this was talked about ages ago - couldn't remember if it was old board or here! Did try searching but please merge if there already is a thread! But this is finally happening. NT in December (hasn't said which space, yet) directed by John Tiffany, book by Dennis Kelly, using the Disney songs.

I am SO happy about this. Especially with Dennis Kelly's involvement now. Wonder what made Enda Walsh drop out?

Interesting - Rufus says the NT won't take any money from Disney to stage the production, though they are using the songs from the film

I imagine Disney may only get on board, should there be a commercial life for it...?

I suspect this will go down the route of Jungle Book? Who's Knows.... Exciting though!

I suspect this will go down the route of Jungle Book? Who's Knows.... Exciting though! I believed when The Jungle Book premiered in Chicago and Boston, it used some money from Disney as well as creative input and access to its songs (still surprised a Broadway transfer still hasn't materialised after 3 and a bit years!), but by the look of it, the NT seem to want just the songs. Nonetheless I'm sure it'll be great, although I wonder if there'll be a new songwriter on board as the Pinocchio film songs might not be enough for a full musical will they? EDIT: Spoke too soon...

What's the point in the National getting involved in this project?
As they say they aren't going t make money from this, but where will it go for an extended life, London isn't a big market for Disney, with Lion King and the newly opened Aladdin doing brisk business. But there is always the sacred cash cow of New York, but wait - with Those two musicals already mentioned that are in London, also you have the imminent arrival of Frozen and Harry Potter, also how long will it before you get a Beauty and the Beast revival? All absorbing that lucrative family market.
So could be a great show and get great critics, but maybe no extended life here.

It's possible the National and Disney saw potential in Pinocchio as a piece of theatre and Disney has partnered with theatre companies in the past, The Jungle Book as mentioned was done in Chicago and Boston, Newsies premiered at the Papermill Playhouse, Hunchback of Notre Dame was La Jolla Playhouse and Papermill, Peter and the Starcatcher was done at La Jolla and off Broadway before it transferred to Broadway and Freaky Friday has premiered at Signature Theatre. Disney Theatrical isn't just looking for potential West End or Broadway hits but also licensing as well, Disney make money from licensing titles, Newsies was only initially going to the regional production that Disney could be able to license but became bigger than they expected. I expect Freaky Friday will become a popular title to license to theatre companies.

I think it's bizarre they are putting this on just a few weeks after Follies opens, surely they want that to play over Christmas too??
Unless Pi ain't opening inOlivier...

It's not *that* weird. Follies isn't going to appeal to a family audience, and the NT does tend to run shows in rep.

Amadeus and Peter Pan have done a pretty good job of running in rep at the Olivier this Christmas? The National always has a Family show at Christmas. They'd be mad not to!

This is interesting. Disney Theatricals isnt the cash cow you would assume. Little Mermaid and Tarzan flopped on Broadway. Hunchback and Jungle Book still havent made it there despite out of town tryouts. Mary Poppins did ok.Really apart from LK, Beauty&Beast and prob Aladdin their record isnt great. Is this just the National xmas show and thats it? Hmmm.

Putting on a Sondheim musical and then a couple of weeks later putting on a Disney musical. Actually, Pinocchio doesn't sound that massive, they said something about it having a puppetry workshop aesthetic. If it is massive, it'll be so in a very different way to Follies.

A couple of weeks?!? More likely a few months, with Follies running from late summer and through the autumn and closing before Pinocchio previews.

Baz had said Follies would be running in the Autumn, not over the summer. I reckon that Pinocchio and Follies will run through the New Year

Is Follies in the Lyttleton also. Nope, Follies is confirmed for the Olivier so there will be no clash between Pinocchio & Follies anyway! If there is a show playing in rep with Follies in the Olivier, it has yet to be announced.

Their New Year artistic press conference will be threadbare, most of it has been leaked.

What has been "leaked" apart from Pinocchio? And is that a leak, as the article quotes Rufus Norris and others?
