We're had live cinema screenings of shows for a while now, but live streaming on the internet directly from the theatre is a new one to me - the Broadway production of The Color Purple closes today and their facebook page just live streamed Cynthia Erivo's final performance of the 11 o'clock number I'm Here (which was sensational despite her being overcome with emotion in the middle). I wondered if that's the first time a show has done something like this, or is it just the first time I've come across it? For special events like a closing night of a production that's been so highly regarded, I think it's a great idea as it allows so many people to experience a little bit of the special nature of a closing show even if they couldn't get a ticket/travel to the show, but I don't think I'd want it to become a regular occurrence... I don't know if a show has ever done it before, but I have just spent a solid 20 minutes crying both during and after watching the video of Cynthia's final performance. To say this run has been iconic is a complete understatement. She thoroughly deserves every success she has had both past, present and future!  |

Playbill live-streamed Jennifer Simard's final Never Can Say Goodbye on facebook during the final show of Disaster!, I can't remember whether it's been done before that (I actually have a feeling the Disaster! one was advertised as the first time it's ever been done), but I definitely wouldn't argue if it started being done more on closing/special nights (like Half A Sixpence did the live stream of Flash, Bang, Wallop on facebook on their press night and, to an extent, Phantom's 30th post-show gala performance), especially with Broadway shows that I know I won't have the opportunity to possibly see!

The Encounter was streamed live from the Barbican, and the Hampstead have streamed at least a couple of live performances (definitely Wild and the Ai Wei Wei play). I'm sure I've seen ads for streamings on the Guardian website, although it's quite rare that I'm in on a streaming night, and they don't always hang around for people to view a little later, so my mental list isn't exactly exhaustive.

Ah I'd forgotten about the Phantom live stream! That one I did watch, though not live (which turned out to be a blessing in the end as I watched it rather more quickly...). I agree, I wouldn't argue at all if it was used more often for special events as they're often so hard to get tickets for (Phantom 30th - failed miserably to get tickets for that) or to actually get to at all as was the case tonight!
I was lucky enough to catch the live stream of Cynthia as it happened tonight, and it will live long in the memory for me - I think the way Oprah just described her is correct - transcendent.

Disaster was kind of a funny one because they clearly just used a crappy iPhone and not even on a tripod. I'm sure the people around whoever streamed it thought it was a brazen bootlegger. Ha.

The French recently streamed the first 20 minutes of the new musical "Le Rouge et le Noir" when it opened. I thought it was a great way to enable people to judge whether the show would be for them or not (music, direction, sets, etc.).

Hampstead have done at least 4 or so I think, again I've never been in on the night either so I'm not hot on the names.
I think it's a great idea, full show or snippet, particularly for things like that number from Color Purple, or anniversary productions giving people a chance to be 'there' but not there.
Would actually love some theatres to stream post show talks as well, because I'm rarely able to coordinate visits with them.

Bright Star streamed the Q&A after its recent concert at Town Hall (which was also streamed in its entirety). It was wonderful!
