Let me start by saying I am not a regular One Show viewer, but saw Danni Minogue on it tonight and she explained the way the voting would work. Let's see if I understood it...
The bands with the most votes each week automatically go through. Of the two bands with the lowest votes the judges will chose their favourite 5 individuals and form a new band from them, with the other 5 going home.

As someone who hasn't yet got around to watching the show (and increasingly wondering whether I should bother at all...) that sounds utterly ridiculous and just a bit bizarre...

So the best bands will continue to get better and gel further while the worst two's members will have to start working together from scratch for the following week? Very bizarre.

This would at least allow for some movement between bands, which is a good thing. But a band with any weak members almost needs to get in the bottom two, in order that they can be re-shuffled.

As I suspected, there's going to be some rather weak contestants carried through, owing to the presence of stronger/more popular ones in certain groups. It also puts the reformed groups at huge disadvantages to the other ones, having little time to develop as a group of 5 singers, and work out what their strengths are as a team. The saved groups, even if they are being carried by just one or two popular contestants, get the automatic advantage, even when there are much weaker performers there. I predict lots of complaints of unfairness, owing to this method.

I'm not defending the process (as I also think it is bizarre!), but Danni did say that forming a new group from the "losers" each week is similar to life in a musical, where an understudy can take a role at any point, and the "band" will have to work as a group with whoever is on stage that night. Which makes some sense, even though I don't think it justifies this process.

I call BS on this - why not change all the groups every week, if this is something they're wanting to challenge the contestants with? There will be at least one group who get to the final without ever having dealt with this, because of this elimination method.

I thought the opening number was hideous. Ok it was big, you should be able to make something look spectacular with 40 plus people on stage, but WTF was Minogue doing in it with one of Latoya Jacksons hats on? Striding around barking out statements in that whiny, nasally voice. Dreadful. Also, the tops coming off was cheap on every level. I've just caught up on last week's show. The opening number was a remake of the "making of a boyband" section of Take That's comeback tour. When dancing and singing and a bunch of "boys" were thrown together to form a boy band by a mad scientist (now reworked to be Dannii's bizarre captain character). Source: I am a bit, OK a lot, of a Take That fan girl.

I hope today's episode will be a bit better than last week's. Last week's was very strange because they had to get rid of 3 guys for every group, which is hard enough to do when there's 8 people singing. But putting an extra band or singer on stage with them made it all very chaotic. I hope we'll just get the bands this time. Is today the first live show by the way or when do they start?

They're filming something for the show with a Jersey Boys theme and Motown the Musical are filming something else next Friday.
I'm just looking forward for the last show. I don't care who wins but there is likely to be a reunion of a certain band! Well, four of them anyway <faint>

According to the TV guide there are only 3 live shows - the first being tonight. So it's all over quite quickly - mercifully!

The opening song medely accapella was good. Riki Lake as the guest judge is a bit odd. She is good but not someone I would expect to be a judge on this I thought it could be someone like Jessie j or someone quite current but we will see how she is.

Watching this live....not out tonight - far too cold!
Iron Sun ( the name is terrible) but despite the poor slot (first) I think they will go through. Good song choice.
