They just need to bring back Liebessexpress(Engine of Love), Lotta Locomotion and Only You back into the show aswell as updating a few roles and maybe adding Belle back into it. If they turn it into a rapping "Hamilton" meets "In the Heights" fusion thinking this is what modern day society represents I SHALL SCREAM!! So will I! Loudly!

Such a pointless mindless waste of everybody's time, money and energy. There are not new depths to be plumbed in this show. It does not need a stripped back feel. It does not need workshopping further. It unfortunately feels like a cynical vanity exercise from somebody biding their time until they come up with some new ideas. Imho

could it be he's saturating the market to prevent more up and coming writers getting new work out there? Because buying a London theatre to turn into a place where new musical writers can experiment is the best way possible to execute that particular plan? no question that ALW and Cameron stifled the competition during the 90s No they didn't. Theatre was going through some very tough times, and theirs were the few shows that kept things ticking over until better times arrived and others could afford to produce once again. Theatre in London is once more in a hard place and reliable banker shows are again being used. Nothing more. I was working there and I saw it happening on a number of occasions. Look at 1995 to 1996, for examples. Theatremonkey, I didn't realize you were such an acolyte.

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar last night and it made me think - they aren't changing the characters, music or plot in that. Why fix it if it's been so successful for decades? As someone said above perhaps after all it really is vanity...

As someone said above perhaps after all it really is vanity... How would you change the plot? Have Jesus get a last-minute reprieve? Seriously though, ALW tinkered with very few shows - Evita, Phantom or Cats have changed very little since they first opened. Starlight Express has been fiddled with several times - from London via Broadway to Bochum, the big overhaul in the early 90s, the constant changes in the German version and so on... Why? Good question...

How would you change the plot? Have Jesus get a last-minute reprieve? That might actually get me to see the show! I'm far to squeamish to see it while there's a cruxifiction involved.

My point is that some shows seem to be rock set in stone. Others are played around with for decades and in my opinion they don't need to be.

I'm so tempted but can't do the Saturday matinee and not sure about the trek up on a Wednesday. If only they'd added a Sunday matinee!

Thanks for the heads up! I've booked for the 13th.
Is it too much to expect them to have gone back to the original score. I hope there's no modern updates, like the hideous rapping cat in Cats.

LOL, the rapping Tugger really grew on me. The 1st time I saw it at the Palladium I was totally WTF is this farce? But I saw that production repeatedly then subsequently on tour and ended up loving it - strange I know. The whole cheesiness of "jellicoolest cat" and the guy's moves I thought were fab. Re: Starlight can imagine a mixture. They won't go back to the original I'm sure (it's moved on such a long way since then I just can't see it) and I think the main point of this is to try out new stuff. That said there are a few axed numbers that I know people have a lot of affection for (There's Me, Belle and Only He/You) that I wouldn't be surprised to see reappear - probably with new lyrics and dramatical context. Can't see the reintroduction of Belle now we have Duvay. And There's Me rather than showing Caboose's softer side I think was just in conflict with the character. The song went briefly to Dinah as "That's Me" during the New London previews (but didn't make the final cut), so maybe that's a possibility. Fascinated to see what the ever-changing 11 o'clock number will be! I've liked Only He, Only You, Next Time, Only He (tour/Bochum version) and I Do very much, but could it be time for yet another new song? I can't write lyrics or music but I'd so love to be involved in this!

And now i have Only He going through my head, belting it out like Stephanie Lawrence!
Ive liked some of the updates, but i think Next Time You Fall In Love is the worst one yer.

Extra seats on all dates were released a bit ago. I got one! After having remorse as soon as it sold out the first time I've now booked for Saturday evening!

No, it played the Apollo Victoria. I suppose Dom could have referred to the "New" London production which replaced the original, but I read it as a reference to the Covent Garden Cats Home. Ha, yes sorry, I was referring to the "New" (aka 1992/3) version of Starlight at the Apollo Victoria. This is when Belle and CB were cut and the show was significantly shortened. Also when Crazy, Next Time You Fall In Love and the Megamix were added. They had a preview period where things were regularly changed and There's Me was sung by Dinah but called That's Me. It was eventually cut completely. Whole thing was also re-orchestrated to sound more 90's pop than 80's pop. I think a lot of it was on the back of the 1992 Jason Donovan Joseph and was the second big project ALW did under Nigel Wright's influence, aiming for chart success perhaps. Certainly in the early 90s Joseph and Starlight were marketed together, often sharing half pages in programmes at other shows. (Off topic but chucking in Sunset at the Adelphi, Cats at New London, Les Mis still at Palace and Miss Saigon at Drury Lane makes it my fave West End era ever)

Looking back, I don't think we went to Starlight for the music, more the 'total theatre' immersion. I suspect this is why it's always seemed so weedy on tour.

Starlight will only ever really survive for a long run if it was in a production like the original staging. It was all about the spectacle. Something that couldnt be seen anywhere else. I'd love to see what it could be in an Arena tour.
