That's more like it, many things that I really want to see there.
I saw Seven Streams of the River Ota the last time it was here, in 1996, and loved it. The intervening years may have changed it, or me, so it'll be an interesting comparison.

Surprised by My Brilliant Friend, wasn’t expecting it to have a life after Kingston.
Recollect enjoying it on a 2 play Sunday despite not knowing the books but not special enough for a second viewing.

I’m concerned that EVERYONE will see it and I’ll be muttering my usual, 'can’t fit it in' excuse which I use when really I’m not bothered. Please advise 🤪 |

In the late '50s/early '60s, there was a popular American television show called The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, starring Dwayne Hickman.It was (I think) the first sitcom to focus on teenagers. In 1988, the cast was reunited for the film Bring Me the Head of Dobie Gillis, an updated re-working of The Visit. Here's a description of the film, from the Turner Classic Movies website: "A movie sequel to the "Dobie Gillis" series which ran on CBS from 1959-1963. The film focuses on the original characters 20 years later, with Dobie now wed to Zelda, his high school sweetheart, and introduces the new character of Georgie, the Gillis' 17-year-old son. Dobie and Zelda are trying to save their town, which is slowly going under because of economic reverses. Thalia Menninger, now the richest woman in the world, has a direct connection to the town's demise and offers an interesting proposition to save the town." I'm not sure Tony Kushner can do better than that! (And of course there was the recent musical starring Chita Rivera, which was quite good.) |

Hmmmmm. Apparently this is not a theatre for ‘theatre aficianados’. So thank you very much. All that dosh I’ve chucked at you over the last forty years, can I have it back please~? Ha, I have every sympathy with getting young people into the NT. I’m v keen on the outreach, the entry pricing and studio plays etc. But saying that they won’t bother with the classics now unless rewritten to be relevant to today, then I am seriously miffed. We are like the 18th century lot who couldn’t face a sad ending to King Lear so they just rewrote it. Just like the only way a musical can get an grip on commercial backers is if it is a version of a hit movie, then are we only to see ‘versions’ of ‘classics’ from now on at the NT?
