It says new, but hasn't this been on before? This is exactly what I thought, but the previous BBC4 doc from 2012 was called The Story of Musicals. There was also a Channel 4 series from 2013 called The Sound of Musicals, which was also the name of a BBC concert-style show with live performances from 2006. Now we have this 'Sound of Musicals' coming next year. You'd have thought that maybe the powers that be could think up some more original names!!! Either way, I'm pretty excited about this, thanks for bringing it up HG.

Shame it's him. I watched one of his previous series and he made it way too much about himself. Will watch the first episode and see if he's got any better. I sincerely hope we don't have to hear him sing either.

It's new. They contacted me as they wanted to know where to find some statistics they needed - I directed them to the right place. Good. I hope they liven up the programmes with some pie charts.

Very interesting so far. I still don't like his style though. At least he didn't sing.

Yes, I enjoyed it quite a lot. Didn't tell us anything radically new, but the performances were nice to see. Looking forward to next week!

Found it quite interesting. Nice to see Anna Jane Casey. I will probably enjoy more when they get onto the newer musicals. Anyone know which theatre they used for the Oklahoma number?

enjoyable but why not credit the performers during the performance segments? really bugged me. Its not that hard to add 'performed by....'

I really enjoyed it, particularly Brand's analysis of some of the songs - highlighting what the writers were trying to achieve. Wasn't Stephen Schwarz wonderful? Wish I could see Showboat with Gina and Rebecca again.

Also agree 100% about not crediting the performers. I'm surprised the Actors Union hasn't objected.

I said the same thing. They were listed in the end credits, which probably covers obligations, but it was annoying.

It was fascinating. A good mix of information and performances.
I agree about the performers being credited. It could easily have been done.
Also agree about Stephen Schwarz - a good interviewee who I could listen to all day! I didn't know he could sing!

interesting Robert Lyndsey gets a credit this week. Guess it depends on how big a star you are.
I wish I'd seen him as Fagin, recent Fagins seem to overplay the comedy

Frances Ruffelle got an introductory welcome too.
Her voice has deteriorated somewhat IMO, but it suited Send in the Clowns quite well, I thought.
