Actually I have read reviews comparing this to the early Pinter plays for its "menace". Maybe it's because the word kept getting mentioned? I'm prepared to bet it isn't mentioned once in any of the first ten Pinter plays or so. These characters (except for the Johnny Flynn character maybe) came across too often as bumblers. You don't get that in Pinter.

What is the running time for this? The Delfont website says 2hrs 30 including the interval but noticed the showing at the cinema tomorrow is 7pm - 1015pm. Not been to a live cinema event before - do they just have the play or adverts/extras also? |

IIRC there is usually an introduction of some sort which is around 15-20 minutes then the play starts as normal. Cinemas usually have a longer running time to cover themselves in case there's a technical issue or the running time is longer than expected. |

In my experience the cinemas don't run ads before the show. If it says 7pm, it starts at 7pm.
Usually there's a short welcome by the NT Live presenter, occasionally a short video/interview related to the show you're going to see, then the production begins.
There's usually a short video in the interval but it's generally included within the specified running time, eg if the interval is 15 mins in the theatre, in the cinema you get 10 mins to go to the loo/buy ice cream and then they run the video before part 2 starts.
I have noticed cinemas massively overestimating theatre/opera running times in the past. For As You Like It, my parents were aghast at the 4 hour running time quoted. Turns out the cinema misread 2h40 as 240 mins!

Flynn was off for both shows yesterday. His understudy (Josef Davies) did a great job.

Don't get me wrong, I thought Johnny Flynn was great in this, but I wonder if perhaps we're overstating the overall quality of his performance because it's just so far above his usual wooden standard...

How kind ! Hard in any case to imagine HANGMEN without him. He seems far and away the least easily replaced of the principals (well, Reece Shearsmith was already replaced - as we know - and that worked fine).

I would imagine it is something to do with family.
He mentioned on David Morrissey's radio show that his wife was due to give birth the date the Wyndam's run ends? Probably that.

The encore will just be a reshowing of the live broadcast. They don't film it again.

he certainly was and outstanding all over again - as was the entire cast - David Morrissey in full, booming voice you could doubtless hear all the way to Oldham - the two women especially great -

I saw the NTLive showing in NYC last night. I really enjoyed it. At times, the accents were a little difficult for me to understand, so I have a question for all of you about the ending {Spoiler - click to view}
When Shirley comes back, between her accent, pitch and sobbing, I couldn't quiet make out what happened to her. I got that she was never in the garage, but perhaps waited in the train station the whole time?

Caught the encore in the local cinema today, very entertaining evening indeed! It shouldn't be THAT funny, should it?
Loved-loved Johnny Flynn's performance - how come he didn't get an Olivier nod for this?..
But.. could somebody please exlain what was so fascinating about the set desighn that it got some awards? I don't find it any special but probably the screen didn't manage to do full justice to it..

At the end of the first scene (the hanging) the whole cell set got raised up into the ceiling before things switched to the pub - that and the burger bar at the top of the set later on were what im guessing got the praise (although I saw it at the RC on opening night 6 months ago so it might be slightly different in the West End and my memories might have gone a bit rusty)

Was the same in Wyndham's by the sound of it. So basically the wow moment is that they've got two-story set? Well.. okay. I liked the pub interior, felt quite authentic. And glass windows which you can sort of see through.

Well it appears that this has just won the Olivier Award for best set design! Which makes me wonder...is it tourable? Because I'm hoping that this will production will tour or do another season somewhere!  |

For me, "Hangmen" is a better piece of writing, although as an acting showcase, "People, Places and Things" is terrific. But for those who want to see "Hangmen" without booking a flight, there are still encore screenings in cinemas, including one at the Vue Piccadilly on Tuesday 26th April. |
