Singing ability and interpretation are not two discrete concepts. It's perfectly possible for a good singer to sing within themselves if that's what they think a particular song requires. They're never going to give the top end of their ability all the time because their voice would be wrecked if they did. I'm not saying Sheridan is a singing superstar, we all know she's not in the top league of musical theatre singers on vocals alone, but it's simply not correct to assume that every note she sings is at the top of her ability and that's it. It's more complicated than that and it is inextricably linked to the choices she has made in how to portray the character. That's all I'm going to say on the subject because we'll just be going around in circles otherwise - clearly we both have very different concepts of what makes a musical theatre performance, or in fact any musical performance at all, so we'll just have to agree to disagree. I know you're not commenting again but I wanted to respond to your post, specifically the comment "It's perfectly possible for a good singer to sing within themselves if that's what they think a particular song requires" I'm intrigued what you mean by this? Do you mean she's singing the correct notes in her head? Also "it's simply not correct to assume that every note she sings is at the top of her ability and that's it. It's more complicated than that and it is inextricably linked to the choices she has made in how to portray the character." This comment literally made me LOL however I do admire your unwavering support of Sheridan in your opinion that her half-assing some songs/notes is a legitimate acting choice. That is all. 😊

This again. Why can't we just agree that she's singing as Fanny Brice, with all that entails, not as herself. Streisand sounded like Brice never would on this earth, she sang as herself, with all that entails.
Streisand is a singer/actor so sang the hell out of the songs, Smith is an actor/singer so acts the hell out of them.
It really is that simple.

I don't understand why this doesn't seem to be understood by some. Sheridan wasn't hired to play Barbra Streisand, she was hired to play Fanny Brice and that is exactly what she is doing 7 times a week at the Savoy!

A - I love apples, apples are brilliant. Everyone should like apples, they are yummy. B - Are you crazy? Oranges rock, they are the ultimate fruit, how can you prefer apples, are you crazy or something? A - Don't call me crazy, oranges make me puke; you can't like them, they're the fruit of the devil. B - No, you're the devil. You probably can't even peel them properly. I bet you just eat the peel. A - Yeah, right, I suppose you prefer tea to coffee as well! B - Well, derrr, yes. Tea is drunk by simpletons and racists. A - I am not a simpleton! C - Err, can we just agree to disagree, nobody's going to persuade anyone else on a matter of taste. A - It's not taste, it's a fact, you don't have to peel an apple, so QED. C - Don't have a go at me, I was only trying to help, what is wrong with you? I'm putting you on ignore. A - Loser!!
(Fifteen minutes pass)
D - Anyone like bananas?
fade to black.......

I didn't realise Fanny Brice wasn't a great singer.

I suspect it will be open season on poor Sarah!

I didn't realise Fanny Brice wasn't a great singer. I didn't realise that SS was supposed to be impersonating not-very-good-singer Fanny Brice!

Her voice was okay but, in the style of the time, not very subtle with a pervasive vibrato. I would imagine that comes from their being no amplification and having to sell the song whilst overcoming that. Sophie Tucker, from the same era, exhibits the same style.

I don't understand why people are finding her a not-very-good singer though when she has done musicals for literally about two decades? Have you not noticed beforehand she hasn't got the strongest voice? If you aren't a fan of her voice, why did you bother going to see her in this when you surely would have some knowledge of her voice beforehand? I don't mean this to be rude, but I am genuinely curious as to why a few people are finding her voice not good with this performance? She must be doing something right if she got great reviews and the general audiences seem to enjoy her in the show?

Merman was similar but even louder, her voice was perfect for cutting through the big band style orchestrations of the thirties/forties. Merman saw Brice and Tucker in vaudeville at the Palace and likely took a lot of her style from them.

Funnily enough, these posters seem to have had no issue with posts criticising Natasha's performance, but when it comes to Sheridan, anything people find wrong with her performance is her acting choices which apparently can never be for the worse. Interesting.

I do a mean rendition of My Old Man's a Dustman, doesn't mean I'm cut out to sing Don't Rain On My Parade.

Both have pros to their performances, both have cons. The great thing now is that we get the chance to choose which of the two we see as they each have performance(s) during the week.

But she got cast to lead the production and, even after illness, still came back to the production. So whatever is being performed on that stage nightly by Sheridan was not just her intention, it is also what the Creative Team wanted to be performed. They knew her voice going into the project.

Absolutely and as a dicussion board, posts discussing both the pros and cons of either performer should be encouraged rather than discouraged, particularly discussions that stem from people that have recently seen the production for the first time, such as KevinUK.

I completely agree, I am on the band wagon, like you, of encouraging (healthy!) discussions as they can be interesting and enlightening. The only problem with this thread is it has been a constant cycle of the same discussion that has made it the most extensive thread on here.
Example being, if Sheridan hadn't gotten ill, this thread would quite literally be halved in terms of page numbers. The only positive thing (I hate that turn of phrase in this situation) is that it has given Natasha a platform too to get the chance to perform. Having seen both, they are both sensational and both are worth the watch.

(fifteen minutes later)
D - So nobody likes bananas then? A - That's not the point, that's not what this thread is about. D - What is it about? A - How apples are superior and are more than one colour. B - Are you still doing this? Texture, it's about texture, C - Oh, for God's sake, are you still on about this. You are never going to agree, what's the point in just restating the same thing in slightly different ways? A - How dare you come in and try and stifle free speech! B - Yeah, who do you think you are? Whats wrong with texture as a clinching argument? C - Oh suit, yourself..... B - Now where were we? A - Apples, wooooh! B - Yeah, but oranges are a historically accurate fruit, apples are just bred to be different. A - You know nothing about it, breeding creates greater variety. B - Dream on, buster, I'm going to walk the dog.
(five minutes pass)
D - Grapes?

I do agree, this thread would have disappeared off the first page a long time ago if not for all of the drama surrounding it. However, in this case - as I said - KevinUK had not seen Sheridan in the show before and therefore offered a fresh perspective, not a rehash of something he'd said multiple times before. I don't personally see an issue with him (or anyone else) being able to air that view just because it's months into the production and we've already heard other people say similar things. To be honest, threads either go one of two ways - discussion stops completely after most theatre fans have had the chance to see a show or opinions get rehashed. I don't see a major issue with either.

This thread is not required reading. You don't have to study it to be a bona fide member of this forum. Those who find it repetitive are most welcome to start (what they consider to be) a more interesting one!

I have a feeling me sticking up for some people on this board has lead to a different opinion of me that I do not want to portray. Though I know it is probably not the intention, I always feel like I come off as a worse person than I am when commenting on some of the threads.

I don't think most people read that much into it to be honest Daniel. I certainly hope not anyway.

I don't feel like I have been portrayed as the positive person I am anyway on here. It is the way I word things, I struggle with describing my thoughts etc anyway both online and in person. It's my fault.
