Has there been another example of a musical that has created so many stars? They're on TV ALL the time!
Curiouser and curioser.

Because Hamilton has permeated American popular culture in a way that no other musical has in the modern age of technology.

Also, have you SEEN Daveed Diggs? If it were up to me, I'd put him on ALL the TVs.

I was thrilled to see Daveed Diggs turn up in the Netflix show The Get Down and I think a few other cast members are in it as well.
I think it was similar (though not to quite THAT extent) when Rent first opened on Broadway. The leads were also celebrated and some got great gigs in musical theatre afterwards (Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel...) others went into television, although only Taye Diggs seems to have managed to establish himself there.
We'll have to see yet if the Hamilton leads can turn their fame into a long-term thing or will be forgotten in a few years.
Definitely a pop culture thing that most other shows fail at. With other shows the background perhaps isn't that obvious that the leads came from there, i.e. Lea Michele became a household name through Glee, but she got there after starring in Spring Awakening. Alongside Jonathan Groff, whose career also took off since.

It's good to see theatre performers get attention from the main stream media, but this is so clearly an effect of the over-hype around Hamilton. I don't think there would have been such an incredible hype if it hadn't been about American history. It would probably still be very popular, but not to this extent.

Talent, social media, and savvy PR reps.

To bring several comments together: we live in a world of social media and savvy PR that means the cast have been able to connect with a wide range of audiences really quickly. And people that recognise that alongside the talent there, that there's an audience hungry for more from these folks.
Back in the day with Rent (to extend that link) the internet and particularly pop culture on the internet was in it's infancy, and so while there were fansites and forums and the like there wasn't the same instant global reach alongside the theatre phenomenon.
Also, as Baemax said...have you seen Daveed Diggs?

But really none of them have fame outside musical theatre. Apart from the guy who wrote it (and I wouldn't recognise him if I found him in my bed) I don't know a single soul who has been in it

It's different in America though. It's hard to measure levels of fame but Lin (the guy who wrote it) is undoubtedly legitimately famous in America now. He hosted Saturday Night Live and his episode had great ratings. I'd say Daveed Diggs is up there as well (bearing in mind he was already in a rap group before Hamilton and is now starring in the successful US TV show Blackish. He seems to have a great agent). The others are probably more recognisable than famous, except Jonathan Groff but his fame mostly comes from pre-Hamilton stuff.

Yeah, those who are or were in Hamilton (currently) have niche fame, but having niche fame means... guess what? You haven't heard of them. Some will become famous outside of theatre, some won't. As was already stated, Lin hosted SNL and is composing for Disney's Moana. Even several of my IRL friends who aren't into theatre know Lin as "that Hamilton guy." And you wouldn't know who they were if you saw them? At some point, every performer you enjoy (or dislike) was new to you.

I wasn't having a go just saying that they r only famous in theatre crowds init. If u mentioned Hamilton to the average Joe in the street they wud prob assume u where talking bout Grand Prix No performer has ever been unknow to me, I'm pretty sure I'm a god

If you're still trying to say that they're only famous in theatre crowds, you're probably forgetting Lin.
The OP is using a bit of hyperbole, so maybe a better phrasing would've been "Why is the cast of this particular show doing so well with national media exposure that can't be compared to those who've starred in most other Broadway musicals in living memory," rather than using the very interpretive word "famous."

I honestly think a good proportion of Americans would know what you were talking about if you mentioned Hamilton to them. I mean the album is No.9 in the American album chart over a year after release (above Adele, above Beyonce etc. whose albums came out more recently). www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200

Yep I'm sure Lin is having a much more peaceful daily life now he has moved to London and isn't being recognised all the time.

Yep, he'll be over here for the next few months to a year, filming the new Mary Poppins movie.
