It doesn't say how many new songs. It could be one or two. Not every song in the show is a corker so there is is room for improvement there.

When I heard that it's essentially the same show bar a few minor changes to songs and dialogue, I was a touch disappointed. I think (I can't be bothered searching) my main comment about the score was that there was Minchin brilliance in there but overall it just didn't quite hit home, it didn't feel like a complete musical somehow. I think a bit more work there would pay dividends. I had no issue with the book particularly beyond issues with original conclusion to the film Groundhog Day which form a vital part of the story, so don't need much there.
Work away, I say.

I didn't like this when I saw it in London. It needs work before they bring it back.

In Warchus and Minchin we trust. As long as Playing Nancy stays.

I like the score, I think its fantastic. I was one of the people who were like "the f*** is going on" when I saw it live with Playing Nancy, but now I love that song and completely get its relavance and meaning. Also the Act 1 Finale, Hope, Night Will Come, There Will Be Sun, If I Had My Time Again and Seeing You (amoungst others), these are great songa and moments. I just think Americans didn't get it. Its interesting just how much a hit both Matilda and Groundhog Day were/are here, but in America, granted Matilda had a decent close to four year run, but I don't know if audiences get jut how clever the shows this team creates are. I think Groundhog should of stayed over here whilst it was still a hit, however I can also see it returning qnd still being a hit with its rave reviews, award wins and popularity following its Old Vic run. Just don't leave it too long to bring it back!

I loved the score too, especially the beautiful harmonies.
Again the article says new songs, it doesn't say an entirely new score, so it may be a few new songs and fits here and there, not a massive overhaul.

Well according to a recent tweet from Tim Minchin the proposed US tour has been scrapped, meaning the chances of this ever coming back over here are looking even slimmer ☹️

Basically asking will they be making loads of changes to the show compared to the Broadway production. His reply was “No ma’am. The show will be exactly the show you love.” WILL BE. Maybe I’m clutching at straws but I’m still holding out hope for this to return.

So reading between the lines, the show will be staying the same, but won't be going on a US tour, so he can only be talking about a future London production surely?

Bearing in mind that the show was much more enthusiastically received in London than in New York I am still hopeful that we'll get it back. Tim Minchin would surely be kicking up a fuss if the London return had fallen through.

I really do hope that it returns.
I saw it in New York the evening that Mr Karl was injured. I enjoyed it then but listening to the cast recording since I get something else from it each time I listen. It’s a very human emotional piece and I think seeing it again here, I would connect with it even more.
Dare I say it could work just as well without such complex staging and many revolves?!

I saw the final dress rehearsal of this (after the initial previews were cancelled) at The Old Vic and really do hope it comes back. It was so special. I took my mum and she still can’t stop raving about it and wants to see it again.

This would have been far better for the Phoenix Theatre rather than yet another Chicago revival.

I guess that 67 seat difference just can't possibly be made up for by West End pricing.....

How much wing space does Groundhog Day require? Having been backstage at the Phoenix there isn't masses of space (better than some West End houses but not by much) perhaps 12 foot from proscinium to wall each side, and not much space upstage for storage, think there may have been a small storage area stage right. Seats aren't the only thing to discuss when talking about making a show fit.

The time has surely come for TheatreBoard to launch it's commercial division. Some know more than others (I'm in the latter camp), but between us we know pretty much everything, and everybody.

One member can launch it. All the others can post snide comments. When it goes bust (probably on Day Two), it will be the turn of another member to launch another. And so on...

Good point. The Old Vic has 7m each side, the Phoenix 2.74 / 2.13. From what I remember, there wasn't much trundling on and off, so I'm guessing it could work? I think the 3 pieces that created Phil's bedroom were probably about 2-3m each and then theres the bar, bandstand and all the rest, before prop tables and quick change areas come into play. Wing space would definitely be an issue at the Phoenix. As a completely uninformed guess, I recon the Broadway show got pulled as a result of an investor pulling out, expecting a quicker return and not being happy. Thus leaving the show short and finances collapsing. I expect the same investor had initially agreed to fund the US tour, but after pulling out of the Broadway run pulled from the tour and their financial commitment couldn't be replaced. Hopefully this is less of an issue with regard to a UK installation as I think the nature of investing and funding productions here is quite different to the US. Just a theory. If the UK run doesn't happen, Minchin will have had a real bad time lately. With his movie getting pulled after 4(?) years of work and GHD US bailing at a loss. Do hope a UK run can help turn it around.

Well, today is Groundhog Day - I was secretly hoping I'd wake up to a post from Baz with an announcement of a London production, but my hopes were dashed ☹️ 6 more weeks of winter it is.
