Well she is at it again. She will now be singing at the official Oscars ball.

Wonder if she got that off the back of the Grammys performance, which seems to have been universally praised (for what it's worth I thought both she and Legend sounded terrific, and the full recording is even better)?
She said in a Q&A earlier in the week that she's in talks about a couple of plays in the UK towards the end of this year/early next but nothing definite at the minute. She said she'll be back if the right opportunity comes along, which I guess is fair enough given how marketable she clearly now is in the US!

I mean I don't know whether you started out this post sober & got progressively drunk during it but I am loving your work! I was reading up on this (Playbill, I think it was) and it explained that, alas, neither the show itself or Cynthia are actually nominated. If they win, the award will go to the programme that hosted the performance, in this case, The Today Show: www.playbill.com/article/the-color-purple-performance-on-the-today-show-led-by-cynthia-erivo-receives-daytime-emmy-nomination

Oh what a load of bullsh*t, clearly the strength of that performance lies in the performers and not the program itself. The Today Show didn't do anything special, the performers did.

Eh I mean I don't think Cynthia or the cast are necessarily deserving of Emmys just because they performed a song well on a TV show. If the show had been adapted as a TV miniseries or something and she had played the role then sure.
Seems like a silly category in general but I guess The Today Show are the ones that chose them to perform and probably had a say in which song they did, how it was staged etc.

My goodness, I wish this woman would stay off Twitter.
She's now openly tweeting about specific roles that she wants that have reportedly already been offered to other people. I mean I admire the determination, but there are less embarrassing and desperate ways to do this, like sending a request through your agent or sending a personal letter to filmmakers.
The latest is she wants the role of Nala in the 'live action' adaptation of The Lion King which reportedly has already been offered to Beyonce. Beyonce infamously has the most rabid fanbase in music and so now obviously they're coming after Cynthia, saying no it's not going to an unknown. And then Cynthia is responding by bragging about the awards that she has won and calling them 'pressed'. She also said Beyonce was 12 years older than her before saying she was mistaken. Would she really have believed Beyonce was 42?
I just don't get it. She's doing extremely well for herself. She's been in America just over a year and has already won a Tony and a Grammy. She's nabbed herself numerous movie roles, including in a Steve McQueen movie. But yet it seems to me she's willing to risk it all by coming across completely unprofessional via Twitter. Maybe others think differently, but it really alienates me as a fan of her work.

Yeah. It's what's stopping me being a 'fan' of hers. For me to be a fan of anyone, I need to like their personality and she's doing everything to put me off her. It's a shame because her voice is glorious but fuxake Cynthia, put the phone down (also applicable for Russell Crowe ten years ago).

I agree - everyone's entitled to free speech of course, and I've defended her in the past because sometimes she has used twitter to good effect for worthy causes. But I've been put off recently by all the tweets that do come across as bragging.
It's a shame, because she's hugely talented and the Tony and Grammy were well deserved, and she seemed much more down to earth when I met her than the ego she seems to be developing on social media...

She's still going now. By replying she just draws more attention.

Wow
I remember the last time this thread was very active when Ms Erivo was being called 'entitled'. I felt a bit uncomfortable then but these latest broadsides are unpleasant. In my opinion there's a nasty underlying thread of racism and sexism to what's being said. It seems very much that Ms Erivo is not allowed a voice and God forbid she express an opinion. The quite vile attacks she has been getting from people on Twitter who are supposedly 'fans' of Beyonce is an embarrassment but not the issue at hand here.
So let's look at what happened, in response to an article that said Beyonce was being 'eyed' for a role in The Lion King live action update, please note 'eyed' not offered, not auditioning, not certain, Ms Erivo tweeted next to an emoji that looks like a shy face ( I can't tell my eyesight is pretty bad!) 'raises hand nervously, then says, can I try'. Unless I'm missing something major, what is so desperate, begging and offensive about this? Where does Ms Erivo attack Beyonce and say the part is hers or call Beyonce out for not having the abilities or talent for the role? As Ms Erivo is known for supporting other people of colour and especially women I am struggling to see her misdemeanour. Or is she just meant to sit at home doing crochet waiting for all those people with decent mature roles for black women to pop around and offer them to her? She will then have her pick of hookers, judges and sassy best friends. Isn't she lucky??
So as I said before, these alleged 'fans' of Beyonce saw the heinous quote and responded by calling Ms Erivo a heifer, a bitch, a no talent, an unknown, someone who hadn't paid her dues. So mature, so empowering. So much what Beyonce and Ms Erivo both preach about. Ms Erivo cited her awards and achievements and of course now gets slated for bragging and having an unpleasant personality. It does seem a bit heads you lose, tails you lose when you consider it but that is often the case in the entertainment industry when you are a person of colour.
From what I'm reading here, despite her undoubted talents Ms Erivo is 'putting people off' which is a 'shame', I hope people are aware that by placing the blame back on the source and shaming her for having an opinion they are not looking at their own prejudices and examining their reactions. Most people of colour know that expressing an opinion, any opinion is often labelled as 'aggressive' or followed up with the classic 'you seem angry'. Really? You haven't allowed me a voice as a woman or a person of colour for centuries so now every time I speak I am perceived as causing problems. Maybe you need to think about that.

No. I would have the exact same reaction if Ben Platt won a Tony and a Grammy and then started tweeting like that. Nothing to do with race or gender. In fact, I'd be more likely to excuse it for a woman, especially a woman of colour, as I understand how hard it can be to succeed in the entertainment industry for them.
However, there comes a point when it goes beyond having a voice and becomes immaturity and unprofessionalism. If this was the first role Cynthia had openly asked for on Twitter then that's one thing, but she's been doing it fairly often. It's harmless enough, I'm more concerned for her sake as I don't think it's the way the industry works. She'd actually be great as Nala but is the casting director for The Lion King going to want to cast her now she's spent the whole day arguing with Beyonce megafans on Twitter? She'd have fared much better talking to her agent and seeing if she could get an audition for the role.
I don't excuse the comments the Beyonce fans have made to her at all, some of them are disgusting. But it's not a good reflection on Cynthia to retaliate by bragging about all the awards she has. It wasn't that long ago she was in I Can't Sing for goodness sake. She has talent absolutely, a lot of it, but luck has come into play for her too. There are plenty of people as talented as her that never get their big break and if they hadn't have decided to revive The Color Purple on Broadway, she'd likely still be looking for hers.
When anyone starts a job they are asked to reflect the company by thinking about what they're posting on social media. Cynthia's company is essentially herself, and tweets like these don't reflect well on her as a performer. When she's losing fans, it will eventually effect how much people want to cast her. She seems to want to work in film and that's great, but she's no household name and has no box office appeal. People wont take chances on her if they think they'll have to risk working with someone that argues with potential moviegoers on Twitter.

I was going to respond in much more detail but snutte already said it perfectly.
I take huge offence to being essentially labelled racist and sexist because I happen not to like a woman of colour's attitude on social media. If you'd actually bothered to read the posts on here properly then you'd realise that what people are actually taking issue with is her repeated bragging about the roles she has done, which comes across as if she thinks she's better than others because of it. I recognised that she is talented, but that alone isn't enough, as many talented performers know all too well. I make no apologies for saying that I think her posts in that respect are giving off an impression that doesn't reflect favourably on her. I'd say that about anyone who did the same, so the fact that you extrapolate that to racism and/or sexism without bothering to actually ask about the intention, or whether it would apply to others and not just Cynthia, in a nice way offends me deeply. At no point did I or anyone else say that we condoned anything that so-called fans of Beyonce have said to Cynthia online, so stop making assumptions.
There's a huge difference between making racist remarks and challenging someone (regardless of their skin colour or gender) for actions you think are unsavoury, demeaning to others or just unnecessarily boastful, and you appear not to have appreciated that.

Probably against my better judgement but I feel compelled to add in something here- it gets really wearing when 'not being a racist' translates as 'don't dare say anything negative about a person of colour'
I have loved Cynthia's performances that I've seen, but I too find her social media persona somewhat grating. I saw the exchange last night as it happened and thought at the time 'Oh calm down Cynthia'- I didn't object to her initial tweet about being Nala so much, but the responses, and the fact it went on and IMO went a bit far in terms of 'going after' individuals, wasn't nice. Now everyone is entitled to a bad day, and I sure as hell am guilty of ranting and snapping on social media. But equally we're all entitled to have an opinion on people's social media persona. And my opinion of Cynthia is that increasingly I don't warm to her as a person. And that is NOT a racist comment, I'm entitled to, as is anyone else say 'I'm not keen on x person because of y'.

I also have now begun to find her quite an unlikable person, due only to her social media presence, and I've just unfollowed her on twitter (like she cares!). This has NOTHING to do with her gender or the colour of her skin, I just find her cringe-worthy and a case study into how not to behave on twitter as a performer. Obviously this doesn't excuse the rather extreme insults that get thrown on her, but it's her way of dealing with them that I also don't want to see. She involves EVERYONE in all of her arguments by not just replying, but quoting the tweet for all to see - which I, personally, don't want to. She may see it as defending herself, but she comes across as incredibly self-entitled and 'holier-than-thou'.

I appreciate that women of colour find people coming down a lot harder on them than other social groups, but let's be fair, we as a board are pretty down on Carrie Hope Fletcher's social media persona as well.

People need to stop worrying about Cynthia and her Twitter account and start concentrating on who picks her clothes and what drugs they're on.

God knows what it could do to you if you had to look at it every day. That monstrosity she wore to the Tonys last year looked like she'd been shredded on her way through a Bacofoil factory during a staff paintball event.

I'm so glad I happened upon this thread and see I'm not the only one who feels this way! I was a big big fan of cynthia I think I've probably seen her in everything she's done since sister act.. I travelled to NY to see her twice and she follows me on twitter. To me her personality has completed changed she has obviously had a big change in circumstance she is very famous now and has won numerous awards (which she doesn't mind boasting about) her quote tweeting arguments and "I'm always in the right mentality" have become so frustrating that I've now unfollowed her. It's disappointing because I still think she is hugely talented but it's difficult to support someone who you dislike personality wise. 😐
