And yes, I agree that Shirley is becoming a total highlight. Stepping out of being ‘Len’s replacement’ last year - and even having a go at the professionals for making mistakes! Great rapport with the other judges. A very witty comment to Sean, too.

Something not quite right with the music. Anyone more musical than I am offer any comment?

Both this week and last it has felt like Tess has tried really hard to come across as quite natural and funny rather than her usual robotic self and it was so cringey to watch. I had to look away when she was laughing about the umbrella gag. I think she should stick to the script and leave Claudia to have the fun. Good job Brucie wasn't at his peak when he was doing it with Tess as he'd have tied her in knots. She used to get confused when he went off script or ad-libed and have to wait to find out where she was. Brucie didn't like reading from the autocue as his eyesight wasn't great and probably felt more comfortable speaking spontaneously and reacting to what others said. Considering Tess hadn't really done TV Work until she was turned 30 and then had only done bits on the Big Breakfast and SMTV live she was lucky to get Strictly. But in this world where we hear about female empowerment etc then good luck to her for having one of the biggest jobs on TV.

I’m not a Tess fan by any stretch but at least she does the “business” which is essential to the progress of the show and doesn’t try to be a “personality “. I do actually like Claudia normally but just not in SCD. This wacky persona she’s putting forward, what is that for? Is it to replace Bruce’s bad jokes? If so then just no. Please stop trying to be the comedian Claudia because you’re not funny, it does not work and is just cringeworthy. The other thing that really annoys me, and I’m sure this is just a personal thing to me, is that when they’re doing the intros together she pulls her face into this faux-serious expression where she sucks her cheeks in and frowns as if she’s going to read the news. Just. No.
I think SCD thrives because of the format, the fan base and the judges. I don’t think the presenters are adding a great deal.

Something not quite right with the music. Anyone more musical than I am offer any comment? The producers keep picking songs that are wildly unsuitable for the dance in question For example, Somewhere from West Side Story is not a waltz (it's written in 4/4 not 3/4 and a waltz has to be the latter), and so had to be rearranged and as a result both sounded awful and didn't fit the dance. Graeme's song was also not an American Smooth/Foxtrot.

I like Claudia but it does feel like she's phoning it in a bit of late. She's still very funny at times though. At her best when she mocks the earnestness and ego of many of the celebs.
Tess is very mechanical. No real personality but generally keeps things running along. Think she should stop pawing the celebs and reacting to the judges comments though, that's when she slips into annoying.

As I just said in the other thread on strictly, let's be careful which thread we post in so we don’t reveal anything to people who don’t want to know. Me included, I get quite 'enthusiastic'.....

It used to be the pros, but increasingly they seem just to be given the music and stupid themes by the producers, as there are an increasing number of music choices that no pro in their right mind would ever choose. As far as I know the pros still submit song wishlists, but they don't seem to get them too often. The producers are more obsessed with linking songs to a celebs day job or their name. Sometimes the pros can't hide their displeasure over unsuitable music and end up commenting on it or hinting about it on It Takes Two or social media.

I liked the pros number at the opening of this - who did they say choreographed it? It was 'our very own...' but then I didn't get the name.

Well I love Claudia but I'm not sure why they dipped her in Quality Street tonight. I'm glad they called Katie out first. Could Stacey be any more annoying? Liked George Ezra. Shirley's Spanx VPL. foxa I think they said Jason Gilkison, the resident choreographer. He's 'our very own' from Perth.* *That's Perth, Australia, Southern Hemisphere, The World. Not Perth Scotland, United Kingdom, The World. But he's still ours, apparently!

Really struggling with this series so far. The music does not fit the dance style and there is sometimes very little actual dance content - some of the dances are unrecognisable as fox trots, waltzes, quick steps etc. I am amazed the judges haven't picked up on this. The dances get lost even further on "movie" week or "Halloween".
Another issue I have is that so many of the celebs seem to be of a high standard from the start bar 3 or 4. I find it hard to believe this standard has been reached in only 3 weeks - so either they have had previous training over the Summer since getting secretly signed up or they have danced before. This means that there can be very little improvement over the coming weeks negating the format of seeing an average dancer improve week on week. It's going to be a little boring watching Joe (for example) bounce around, and Faye and Ashley dance professionally week after week.

I was very surprised and impressed with Kate’s dance last night and the overall performance she gave. A generally good group this year but think as in recent years, it’s lacking that something special and isn’t quite the show it used to be.

The standard isn't higher this year. Last year week 2 had a 32, 34 and 36. The year before had three 32's and two 30's. If anything the standard is lower this year than it has been for a while.

Or the judges marks are a bit more realistic this year than last. The standard is pretty much the same, though i spotted the winner in week one last year, and nobody looks like winner so far. The music has got really dull and repetitive, when it's suitable at all. Whole thing needs a new producer to kick it up the butt.

Another issue I have is that so many of the celebs seem to be of a high standard from the start bar 3 or 4. I agree with the rest of your post but not this. To me it's the opposite - so many of the celebs showed a bit of promise in the launch show, but the standard in the first two weeks has been generally awful, which has made for a very disappointing start to the series for me. There is a distinct lack of decent technique and flair going on, so it's difficult to pick out who is actually good. Faye and Ashley are obviously great performers, but both of them had huge technical issues this week as well (Faye's Viennese Waltz was technically very poor, and Ashley's knees were far too bent), so for me they were overmarked. Kate improved vastly but her posture was dreadful and her footwork was just ok. Vick should be good but she's lumbered with a pro who seems to think the Latin is all about him and who can't dance the ballroom well himself, let alone choreograph it or teach it. Joe hasnt actually done a proper dance in proper dance shoes yet so who knows if he's any good or not - his Charleston didn't impress me at all. I'm really struggling to engage with this series at all - a couple of people really need to start shining to bring it to life, and no-one's got there yet.

I’m actually very impressed with Joe Sugg. For someone with little to no dance experience (seemingly), he’s doing very well.

I’m actually very impressed with Joe Sugg. For someone with little to no dance experience (seemingly), he’s doing very well. Me too. He's like a wind up toy that's been tightened up right before the show and then let go. Many more lauded contestants in the past have been more style over substance (which even the judges have been guilty of praising), I don't know why people are so bothered this year.

I get annoyed about it every year as I actually care about the dancing! Probably why my favourite hasn't won for years...

If you hadn’t told me it was a Charleston I wouldn’t have known what Joe was dancing. Not his fault, he is obviously able to move to order. I think the show has become lass about dancing and more about the 'journey' and the sparkle.

No pro dancer quits the show if they can help it. It is so high profile and provides very lucrative spin off work - the Strictly Tour and of course their own touring dance shows - which would not sell if they were not on the TV.
The BBC may not renew the contracts - that is another matter entirely!

Anton does his own tours which are very lucrative and at 52 years old knows he may have lost a bit of quickness in his dancing compared to guys 15 to 25 years plus younger than him. Plus he knows he'll likely get the older females who aren't good dancers. So he may decide to call it quits but I doubt he'd do it just as the series has started and he's gone out. He could easily go onto a role on It Takes Two or paper columns like Brendan has done. Plus he'd be offered huge sums to do a panto or extend his tours.

"At least I've got my own hips!" 🤪
Who are you and what the hell have you done with Oti? Whoever you are, stop the bliddy screaming ffs!
Hold on to your custard creams, but I'll say this only once...Tess's dress was gaw-jus!
Stop putting the celebs in coloured shoes. It shows off what they're doing wrong. I love Faye but thought she wasn't in sync with Gio - I even watched it back after the judges' lauding her and honestly couldn't understand it. Kept seeing flashes of red that seemed out. 30 seconds at the end were the classic Danny/Sandy stuff we can all do. Didn't understand the raving.
Lee was awful, though not as awful as those tree-stumpy jeans and hideous gilet they put him in.
How I wish Katya had done that fantastic routine with someone else. Anyone else. Even a Monkey or a Bear.
Loved Danny. Again, no idea what the judges' problem was.
Hated Graeme. Couldn't get past the costume.
Lauren looked awkward the whole way through.
Really liked Charles - not sure why he's so far down the leader board. His lifts were amazing.
Stacey was good, despite her annoyingness. (Warning: all the 8 year olds in my school absolutely love her.)
Don't like Dr Ranj but thought he was better than the judges' marks.
Didn't like Joe's ballroom.
AJ's hair.
Darcey's earring.
Martine who?
ETA. Talking to myself! Everyone's in the spoiler thread.😬

I thought I’d tuned in to the Martine McCutcheon show. What was THAT all about?
Loved Spider-Man. That’s going on my list of brilliantly funny but great routines with Dani Harmer as Velma from Scooby Doo doing a cha cha cha and Matt thingy from the One Show doing Austin Powers.
Ashley thingy is beautiful and too good for this.
Sean Walsh. Fancy him even more now. I know! Brilliant routine but the cheesy flying at the end wasn’t needed.

I’m confused do we have to talk about the dances in the spoiler thread now too? Can’t we just assume this is a thread to talk about the show and the spoiler one is just for well...the spoiler?
