I've just had a really ground-breaking idea which might perhaps make Strictly seem a bit more appealing to me and rescue it from the depths to which it has currently sunk, in my humble opinion.
Next time a couple is to perform a classic ballroom dance like a Foxtrot, a Quickstep, a Waltz or a Viennese Waltz, put the man in a proper white tie and tails evening suit and the woman in an extravagant but beautiful shortish ball gown. That would show off the steps that the dancers were doing and add elegance and glamour to the routine.
I know this is a revolutionary idea and goes totally against all the current costuming practice on Strictly but hey, it might just help rescue this dying series that was once so gloriously entertaining!
Oh, and we don't need 'contemporary dance' which has no place in the ballroom.

put the man in a proper white tie and tails evening suit The whole time Joe was dancing I was wishing he was in tails, would have made it so much better! A flat cap has no place in the ballroom!

and the woman in an extravagant but beautiful shortish ball gown. Competition dresses aren't usually short - the bottom of the skirt should be pretty much down to the ankles, and a properly made and weighted skirt should then have plenty of movement to allow footwork to be seen.

I am a long time fan of this show but I just cannot get into this series at all! Difficult to say why but here are a few random thoughts.
1. Like the X Factor and other long running series the format is tired. 2. The usual format of tick box"celebs" - news reader, sports person, soap star, ex band member, old person. It's just boring. 3. Far too much story telling and "faffing about". Almost like the producers don't trust the actual dance content to hold the viewers interest, so the props, sets and costumes take over. 4. The judges seem tired - same remarks - Craig seemed "off" this week. Alfonso was breath of fresh air - his impersonation of Bruno was very funny! Perhaps the judges should be replaced with fresh faces. The scoring is all over the place! 5. Talking of replacements - Tess just gets worse and worse. She was really only the straight foil for Bruce and is no presenter in her own right. 6. The dance styles are completely unrecognisable - Vicks dance this week was just prancing about! 7. Halloween next week will be another excuse to pile on the make up, costumes, dry ice and props to disguise the actual dancing.

Most of the pictures of my teachers when they were dancing competitively (they're in their 60's now) featured tea length ballroom dresses. Modern competition dresses are largely ankle length as that's what is trendy at the moment. As long as the feet can be seen (and they're longer than knee length) it seems to depend where we are in the fashion cycle.

That would show off the steps that the dancers were doing and add elegance and glamour to the routine. And tell the cameramen to get shots that show legs and feet, rather than close ups of facial expressions! The camera work on Strictly is so poor these days, if you care about looking at the dancing and technique

Immmm, I don't really want to state the obvious but you do all realise that 'Strictly' isn't really a dance show don't you? At least not anymore and hasn't been for some time. It's a Saturday night entertainment show with a bit of dancing if they can be faffed. Just like 'The X Factor' isn't really a talent show.
Enjoy it for what it is but if you really want dancing, I think you may need to look elsewhere.
As you were.

Frank and Peggy Spencer must be spinning in their graves.
When it was just ‘Come Dancing’ the women used to wear those dresses with layers and layers of netting underneath. They were just below knee length and were so puffed up that the man sort of squashed them when they were in hold. And they always seemed to be bright orange or green or lemon coloured. It was a very different affair.

Of course you are right, Ryan, but even as it has been morphing from a dance show into an 'entertainment show' in recent years many of us still found a lot to enjoy, but judging from most of the current posts that is no longer the case. I would not like to see it retired completely but maybe a major shake up or change of format might be worth trying while still keeping it as some kind of dancing competition. But what form the new show should take I really don't know.

All of that. Of course it is a Sat night tv show with good ratings and something the BBC craves with evil endeavour so well done them. It would be fun to have a dance show with amateur groups ..like the original Come Dancing.

Fair bit of comment on Social Media that if Vick had been partnered with Neil Jones she may well have still been in as Graziano didn't give her a great routine to work with.
I did enjoy Alfonso as a guest judge, he'd done his homework and didn't wildly over-mark. But I do wonder why they potentially had to bring someone over from the US when they could have easily got an ex Strictly champ in for the week like say Ore or put someone like Ian Waite or Jason Gilkison on the panel.

I got the impression that Bruno got Alphonso in or was that just something he was told to indicate.

I'll put this in spoilers encase anyone wants to go on cold tomorrow...
Pertaining to Stacey and Kevin's routine:
{Spoiler - click to view} They are dancing a tango to the Doctor Who theme with Stacey dressed as 13, and Kevin as a cyberman.
Early on this week there was talk of a role reversal for some parts of the dance, in celebration of the first female Doctor, with Stacey taking on some of the traditional male roles. There wasn't much more explanation around what this means though.
On ITT yesterday they showed a clip of their training, so it seems like partway through the routine they completely swap places with Stacey taking up the leader's hold and Kevin the follower's.
Interested to see how this turns out, but for the clip they showed her frame did not look right and seemed quite weak.
As someone who has danced both I know it is difficult to switch between the two, and that the techniques are different.
Still I'm excited to see how it goes, and think Kevin will make a lovely follower.

Hint of this in Takes Two. But not clarified. Let's hope the judges understand. 😂

Didn’t the same pro do the same thing last year?

The Fosse inspired Couples’ Choice dance should be good for this board.

Dr Ranj didn't deserve 10, let alone 20. Outrageously over marked. He forgot most of it.

I hated the Troll Charleston. It was just too quirky for me and lacking in authentic moves. No way was it one of the best bits of choreo ever.
Seann's VW was awful in so many ways
There have been a lot of poor dances so far.

Lisa Riley and Robin Windsor did a Charleston to Witch Doctor a few years ago. Running out of ideas Strictly? Anyway I know nothing about anything but the one tonight looked a bit sloppy to me.
I thought that Time Warp routine was very good, perfect marriage of dance, routine and music choice. If he made mistakes whatever, it looked good.
I don’t get the love for Joe. He just looks gangly and awkward.
Faye Tozer is probably getting lined up for some future incarnation of Roxie Hart right now.

Missed last night's show as I was at Jersey Boys, but right now I'm on the way to Sussex to take a dance class with Ian Waite!

So I watched this light. A couple of observations.
I thought that a lot of time, effort and preparation had gone into the whole look of the show in terms of make up, wigs and costumes.
Interesting that both Tess and Claudia we're dressed in costume and that although the judges were, it wasn't over the top. Was Shirley wearing contacts?
Speaking of Shirley, she is on fine form.
Also interesting that three couples ended up at the bottom with the same score.
Dr. Ranj is safe for a bit yet. He seems to be the flavour of the month. I turn over to that audition show on ITV (I think) and low and behold he was there too.
You can really tell when the judges like a dance as they go ga-ga and are simply gushing! I can't remember Darcy outright criticising a dance, as she tends to be more on the path of encouragement.
For the first time I found Graeme to be disappointing.
I LOVE The Rocky Horror Picture Show and enjoyed Charles and Karen, though he's the first black Riff Raff I've ever seen.
If I had to call it, it'd predict Faye, Stacey and Danny for the final.

Firstly, I am a petty petty woman who did indeed whizz through JUST to see that elimination.
I also only whizzed through and watched the dances this week. Loved Stacey and Kev. Thought that reversal was clever and well executed. Faye...oof I need a minute for that outfit, that routine...seriously though very good. Also I'm very much enjoying Joe's progress, and I hope he stays a while.
And so sue me Dr Ranj was just adorable in that Monster suit. And I love him.

I'd love to see Craig or Bruno as the Narrator in the Rocky Horror Show their schedules are very busy but Craig has fitted in Annie so could probably do a run. There seems to be a few clear gaps in the talent now - Charles, Kate, Graeme, Ranj would seem logical ones to go in next few weeks then probably Lauren around Blackpool time. Leaving Faye, Ashley, the Dooley, DJJ and Joe as a strong top 5. If we assume 4 make the finals - I'd say the 3 women do with Joe's bigger social media following getting him there over Danny.
