I’ve been mulling over whether to put up a poll for people to give their ratings after the opening on Tuesday. I do think the star ratings are fun for high profile shows or those which have generated a lot of discussion. We do see members participating in polls where they have never actually posted on a thread for so it’s a good way for those people to get Involved over and above just reading the forum. I’m just worried that it will become the source of arguments. what do you think? Is it more trouble than it’s worth? Go for it! How much more argumentative can it get?

Um. The set in this artwork is quite obviously (I'd have thought) the Stage Right Box from scenes within the Opera House. In terms of dropping the 'The', I always thought this was a contentious/rights issue given the production that inspired this was Ken Hill's 'Phantom of the Opera'. Edit: context Yes, and the design on the poster conforms with the touring version/planning submission design. In the original production, the tops of the boxes never reached the height of the proscenium (these don't either; what they're reaching is the top of the new internal frame that is used to hang the drapes off of during the auction scene). In Matt Kinley's adapted version, they do because they shove all the sculptures to the top of the boxes, leaving the sides bare with that 'shattered' effect that stays like that throughout the entire show.

That’s not the proscenium. Not sure if you mean it's not the proscenium in the picture, or it's not the proscenium right now in Her Majesty's. If the former, you can see enough of the detail to align it with the planning submission design based on the tour. The stage picture wouldn't have looked like this in the original when the boxes are used. The set piece depicted in the image is not the proscenium.

But it isn't the original design either, it's the planning submission design, with the sculptures crowded in the corner of the box where it meets the internal frame. Hence the original proscenium doesn't look like it's returning.

I'm ready with the popcorn for the comments bursting onto here at 10.15pm. We all know what's going to happen. "Omg the show is the best shape it's ever been in, I didn't even notice the missing orchestra. Every change has been amazing and improved the show, full standing ovation from a packed house". Cue rebuttals, cue thread locked. Then negative reviews will trickle in over the coming weeks saying the opposite, the show is a shadow of itself etc. Interested in the public's opinion on this one.

It’s a very exciting evening and we look forward to everyone’s feedback.
Can we please, PLEASE just remember TheatreBoard’s rule about being respectful and courteous to fellow members.
Some will be proven right, others may have got it wrong. It really doesn’t matter in the greater scheme of importance so let’s collectively agree to be magnanimous and generous in how we react to the feedback and how we move this thread forward.
Thank you.
Now, the long awaited reopening of…. The Phantom Of The Opera!

I think we all know what's coming. Though...it doesn't look like it is quite so packed a house; there's still availability. Here's to the creaky, outdated show of yesteryear with its fine orchestra and full-blown designs as intended. I look forward to catching up with that one on Broadway, at least. Friends of mine have gone tonight; I don't want to go to any show right now due to the COVID situation. I'm told they were still putting in rigging etc into the theatre at 4pm! Talking about last minute...

Last minute "crunch" on a new show is the most stressful time imaginable. They'll be working right up until the house opening. If only the average theatregoer knew the chaos that goes on! 🤣

I'm not there, but just seen a first picture of inside
Angel gone as suspected. Replaced with the original coat of arms of the stage. Chandelier on stage and so will rise.

As I feared, the proscenium sculptures on the side are entirely missing and the opening effect with the drapes won't be as before. Those shattered sides will remain like that throughout the show.
The Angel has gone completely. They could have at least put in a fixed model of it rather than destroy Björnson's favourite set piece entirely.
Though I hear the chandelier is bigger and round. But when Hal Prince considered the proscenium the key to the show, I can't help but be disappointed.
