Just for a fun debate - Wonder if ALW were to buy out CM as a producer if that changes it from being the original production ? It's all semantics at the end of the day isn't it- Cameron obviously favours the "any day anything named Les Mis brings me ££ is a day added to the longest running production" approach; while the less business-oriented, more artistry-focused fans will probably wait and see if the 2021 Phantom continues to successfully carry out Hal/Maria/Gillian's vision, before deciding whether or not it's deserving of the "Brilliant Original" mantle. Changes in the % of shares in the production is as trivial to the "original production" debate as new costumes/cast changes/sound desk upgrades I should think... obviously only speaking in terms of the production as experienced day-to-day by an audience member, here!

Interesting that LW Theatres has taken up a 50 year lease on Her Majesty's. I assume they announced it to ensure people the theatre wasn't going to sold off anytime soon.

Not sure how to feel about this. The article mentions that "a "brand new physical production" – was used when the show opened in an international tour in 2019, with a set that cost $10 million to make and was intended to look "exactly like" the original piece." Are they suggesting that when Phantom comes back, it will keep Maria's designs, but it will be similar to the international tour? And how similar/different to the London version was that? Things have just gotten even more confusing.

The international tour is fairly similar to London/Broadway, more similar than the 2020 UK tour anyway. Main difference I know of is All I ask of You has a stationary angel on the stage which is then visible through the curtain as the chandelier falls.

They'll rewrite the story so the Phantom is a producer rather than a composer. He won't murder anyone, but he'll cut productions to the bone and angry fans will treat it like a murder anyway.

I think the only continuous long runner for a musical will be The Lion King as Mamma Mia! has moved theatres twice and they replaced the set when they moved to the Novello. As I said, I don't think any show should continue their long run after this pandemic

As far as I’m aware, there’s multiple copies of the Phantom set/costumes in storage in case a new production needs to be produced. So I really don’t understand where this $10 million is coming from. Sure they had to make a new slimmer chandelier and change the proscenium a little bit for the world tour but $10 million?!?! Edit: If they’re factoring in the cost of costumes as well then maybe it’s understandable-ish. Some of the Christine dresses cost up to $40,000 to make a new one. They’ve mostly been re-working old costumes to fit new actors though.

There really is no way it cost that much. Even Lord of the Rings, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Mary poppins, moulin Rouge didn’t cost that much.
A huge budget for a set is around £4/5 million at the absolute most.
It’s all hot air.

The production probably costs $10m in total which for a show on the scale of Phantom is about right.
