I have just realised that BurleyBeaR and Oleanna are discussing a high E that should be sung by Carlotta in Phantom. I have a little anecdote about that which I heard from an acquaintance who got it from an acquaintance..... It seems that at some point some years after Phantom first appeared that Rosemary Ashe, who had created Carlotta, was returning to the role once again. I don't know exactly where or when but apparently in rehearsal, Rosemary opted not to sing the high E, to which the MD insisted: "Oh, you must sing the high E because it's what Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote." "No" replied Rosie, "it's what I wrote! It was my suggestion that Carlotta would sing that note because back in 1986 I had it in my voice, which I no longer do, so let's get on with me singing the lower option now." That may be apocryphal but it's a nice story nevertheless. Fabulous!

Having briefly worked with Rosemary Ashe, I can hear her saying that. A real force of theatrical nature. I remember her pulling up to rehearsal in her bright pink sports car and dressed in matching pink accessories. A modern diva!

Honourable mention to Phantom for hitting 30 years on Broadway yesterday. Generally avoid Twitter, but just been looking at some of the highlights... One of which includes a choreographed lighting performance on the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING for Masquerade. Madness!

Are we gonna say anything about Sarah Brightman's dress, or be good and pretend we didn't notice?

Are we gonna say anything about Sarah Brightman's dress, or be good and pretend we didn't notice? Haha! I think I secretly rather like the fact that La Brightman is (a) clearly a little nuts, (b) couldn't care a jot what people think nowadays and (c) has the chutzpah to put that outfit on, check herself in the mirror and think "yep, that's the one for today".

Oh me too, go on with your mad self Brightman and don't let anyone try and change you. Honestly we could all do with being a little bit more Brightman

And all quite possibly with the intention to rub ALWs face in it in a "this is what you could have had" manner.

What’s the cast like at the moment and is the current cast on through June? The cast at the moment is really strong on a whole! Both times I've seen the cast I've seen Luke McCall as The Phantom (not sure where Ben Lewis or Scott Davies are at the moment) and I think he's become my new favourite Phantom. He reminds me of a mix between John Owen-Jones and Ramin Karimloo. I'd probably say the weakest link in the cast is Jeremy Taylor, who plays Raoul (I'm a big Raoul fan so I was very disappointed in his performance) As far as I know they're all contracted through to the start of September.

Luke McCall has been the Phantom for the last 2 weeks (with the exception of one Scott Davies show on Monday). I saw him last week and he really was excellent (as is Ben Lewis who I've previously seen) - one of the strongest Phantoms I've seen. Both Kelly Mathieson and Amy Manford are very good Christines, and unlike demelza, I really enjoyed Jeremy Taylor as Raoul.
Not sure where Ben and Scott are - Scott had a show on Monday but has disappeared again. Kieran Brown was on standby last weekend, not sure if they have someone else on standby while Luke is on this week.

After seeing announcements every day for over a week from the West End Understudies Twitter account I started to wonder if Luke McCall has Ben Lewis & Scott Davies locked in a subterranean lair beyond a lake!

Luke is on for another 2 shows today. Presumably, Ben has had some holiday time, but since Luke has been on for over 2 weeks now, I assume Ben is also poorly. Scott must be off ill as well, since he did manage one show at the start of this week, but then has been off since then.

Its about time I see this. Can anyone recommend a good value for money seat for a first take it all in visit? Are you able to see it on a Thursday afternoon? They do best available seats for £25 and you can get a good seat in the stalls. Alternatively I would recommend TKTS, they have some good deals usually (for example next week they are selling in advance £75 tickets for £43, and £55 seats for £35. I would recommend front stalls as long as you are infront of the Dress circle overhang.

Beware dreadful legroom even in the best seats!

Indeed, but it’s pretty poor that there are only 8 seats in the stalls that someone over average height can sit comfortably.

Ben Lewis moving to Company in September so only staying for the 1 year contract. What are peoples thoughts, worth catching him before he leaves? Not seen him as the 'original' Phantom.
