Luke has a fantastic voice, but is an extremely average actor. For some reason anyone who has been in Les Mis gets this extra excitement and aura about them. Give me Scott Davies any day. Luke sounds fantastic but his Phantom is as placid in the Final Lair as he is when he appears behind the mirror in his first scene. Pretty on the ear, but on the eye and heart?

Scott is marvellous, I'm glad he's retaining his role at Phantom. He pretty much changed my opinion of the entire show with his performance.

Playing the same role on and off for nearly 20 years must get a bit laborious, but he still keeps it fresh and passionate. Its great they've kept him on, as a classical singer, despite bringing more popular/musical theatre singers in to take the lead over the years.

Can't stand Scott's Phantom, he's my third least favourite out of the 40 or so I've seen. It's telling that the only two I enjoyed less have both been super recent and in the West End - Ben Forster and Peter Jöback.

I've seen Ben, Scott and Luke, and I'm afraid Scott was by far and away my least favourite. Whilst his voice was impressive (if a bit too operatic for my own personal taste), I didn't care for his acting at all. Luke was far from passive at the performance I saw, and Ben has really improved as the Phantom. I love his acting choices mostly, and his voice is much more powerful than it was at the start.

Ben Lewis has a phenomenal voice - really looking forward to seeing him. And I liked Jeremy Taylor as Fiyero a few years ago. Actually I remember him taking over from Nadim before, as Rolf in The Sound of Music about 8 years back! Delighted that Scott Davies stays, too. Don't know either of the Christines, but they sound like they are of the Harriet Jones mould - relatively recent graduates, classically trained, which is the kind of Christine I like. Best get booking! Harriet will miss her

i am so happy that Ben Forster is now no longer the Phantom, have only seen 4 so far but he is by far the least liked for me
my 2 faves are Geronimo Rauch and Peter Jöback
one casting i am not so ok with(well maybe he would surprise me, but after Harriet leaves i am taking a break from Phantom for some time) is Jeremy as Raoul - hope he is not as boring as he was in Wicked, nearly fell asleep watching him dancing through life
the Christines sound great from the audios i have seen and i bet the new Ben in great too, like him in LND

Don't be so catty. It's harmless, and probably the work of someone very young. Besides, you declared on your last post that you were taking a break from Phantom now Harriet Jones is leaving. So Kelly, Amy and their followers need not be a concern to you. Let them have their fun.

Interesting you say that because theres been quite a bit of debate here recently about actors specifically having to re-enact the original principals role, specially Phantom having to be played exactly as Crawford played him in the late 80s. I've always felt Forster played him quite differently to other Phantoms, but others have disagreed saying its Crawfords Phantom verbatim.

Personally, I never really liked Crawford (granted, I never saw him live, but I just don't really like his voice). I've always liked Phantoms who play him more aggressively. I love Peter Karrie, for example. I don't know, I just really felt that Forster played the Phantom perfectly to how I imagined the character to be. Definitely not like Crawford played him. I actually avoided seeing Forster in the role for a while because of negative reviews, and only went to see him because there was a good ticket deal! So glad I did.

He seemed nice in all the rehearsal gossip we found out. I now have his boyfriend, his mum I think and varous relatives he has following it 😂. He was a swing last year but saw everything he covered in the show.

They like Kelly regardless of what she does as Christine. The account is Kelly Mathieson Fans, not Kelly Mathieson As Christine Fans! Maybe they've heard her in concert, or have seen videos on line. Plenty of singers have fans who've not seen them live. In fact, thousands of people love musicians, singers and bands they've not seen live.

I'm not sure if I like Kelly Mathieson. I don't think she looks like a Christine. I also think she sounds too mature for the role/too trained/not innocent or sweet enough.
At times she sounds like one of those 40 year old Broadway Christines from a few years back. I also don't like that she sings the Broadway cadenza. The one they normally do in London has much more charm I think.
When I visit the show I would love to see Amy Manford.

The one they normally do in London has much more charm I think. When I visit the show I would love to see Amy Manford. I haven't seen this cast yet and am avoiding spoilers by listening to clips etc, but I precisely feel the exact opposite to you in terms of opinion. I much prefer the better trained, more classical sounding Christines. It's a joy to hear the score sung properly, how Lloyd Webber intended. All of the early Christines were proper singers - Sarah Brightman, Claire Moore, Rebecca Caine. This trend followed right through the 90's and early 00's, brilliant singers like Myrra Malmberg, Lisa Hull, Deborah Dutcher to name just a few. The current fad in theatre, and has been for a decade or more, is for younger, prettier people to get certain roles regardless of technical ability. Style over substance. Drama school leavers are cheaper, for one thing. The early Phantoms, for instance, were all older guys to try and emulate the older Father figure dynamic of the story. Compare Dave Willetts or Simon Bowman to, say, Peter Jöback or Ben Forster. Sometimes this dissonance in casting policy extends to the *same cast* - take Scott Davies' presence for example. The idea of Christine being "sweet" as a priority now is one built on societal ideals rather than theatrical credibility. Taste gets shaped based on experience. The best Christine I've ever seen live was Elizabeth Loyacano on Broadway, who definitely falls within "those 40 year old Christines from a few years back". Compared to, say, Robyn North or Leila Benn Harris, she is Maria Callas. As for the Broadway cadenza, do you mean the end of "Think of Me"? Having been involved in the rehearsal process for this show, I can tell you that this is the choice of the MD, who works with the singer to find which version is most appropriate. I've heard the "Broadway" version done numerous times by many Christine's in the West End and not always by the best singers. Also, it is approximately 15 seconds out of a two hour show.
