Ouch
That is massively over produced
Almost certainly to hide the fact that a lot of the vocals are sub par. Major issues with diction and vowel placement particularly in the male line.
And the final section vocals were being drowned out in the sound balance which is also a sign that things are being hidden.
That is not how that piece should sound.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just used the recording they use during the show

OK - its just after midnight here in the States and the single has appeared on Apple (which is listed as a single but "London Cast Recording 2022" so is a full album coming?) If it is, yeah, somethings way off. It's way over produced with this bizarre echo on the vocals

As dull as it sounded in the theatre from these two. Not the greatest cast at all.

So wait- it’s just a bad new version of the title song and not a cast recording?! Lol

No way in hell I'm paying to see that.

What a dissappointment. Only the one song & download only. I thought it meant a whole new cast CD.

That cadenza is the worst I have ever heard. This lady is not suitable for the role at all. It doesn't even sound like singing. What on earth is going on?

Even worse than I expected.

Here is a clip to recover your ears from the travesty we have just heard. This is how the cadenza is supposed to sound. With real singing and adrenaline inducing chords, not ruined by some electric "80's bold & the beautiful" guitar.

And to think, they could've had John Owen-Jones or Earl Carpenter.

I haven't managed to listen yet, but I recall people raving about Lucy's voice for Camelot. Is it just not suited to Christine?

I recall people raving about Lucy's voice for Camelot. Is it just not suited to Christine? I loved her in Camelot, but her Christine isn't my favourite. I was a bit underwhelmed when I first saw her, but she's definitely grown on me. I did get to see her understudy Anouk who I preferred though.

And ironically that howling guitar never appeared in the show until the Vegas production in 2006, after which it was introduced into London in 2008 and then later on Broadway. For years it never appeared as Hal had rightly warned ALW that including it would date the number and jar with the rest of the show. Every time Cameron and Andrew try to be 'down with the kids', they just the date the show more. It's as embarrassing as Cameron's 'MIZ ROCKS' slogan. I don't think Michael Crawford or Sarah Brightman have anything to worry about...lol.

Not sure what to make of that recording really. I mean, it's not the first recording in 20 years of it or whatever ALW said, the Royal Albert Hall one was about 2011. It's hard to see how they actually sing due to what must be the huge amount of production on this. The final section sounds like they've sampled Lucy's voice then just played the notes on the keyboard. No way anyone can hit those notes with that precision and come off them in that way, not even the best coloratura's in the opera world. So I'm non the wiser about how Lucy actually sings it.
I saw Camelot live and I wasn't blown away by Lucy. She has a nice stage presence and could sing the score fine, but I couldn't help (perhaps unfairly as no-one could match it) comparing her to the Julie Andrews recording.

They lurvs Killian. He is in every one of their productions playing almost every part at one time or another. I do not think an album will perform to their expections.

That's not great. All sort of production issues, and something weird going on with the word 'opera' every single time. Almost like 'operer', though that's not quite right. Her voice is lacking depth throughout and disappears at the end, his seems to drrrraaaag out words.
If this is how Phantom is performed now, I think I'll give it a miss.

right, because every other Christine in the past 35 years sounded like Joan Sutherland As long as they sound human in the cadenza, it's more acceptable than this version. Sampled "tones" from a computer and then transposed is better than Joan Sutherland? Is that your point? Only an idiot could read my post and think that's the point.

Although Lucy is not my favourite Christine, she is not the worst I have seen and I don’t think she is necessarily bad in the role, just a bit ordinary but I think that is the way it has been for a while with the casting of the role. Killian on the other hand is underwhelming and in my opinion miscast.

I’ve noticed that when he pulls the sheet across himself he always seems to place it very carefully. So I assume it’s resting on some sort of support away from his body so he can go into the back of the chair without us seeing the sheet move. The arms of the throne/chair are really wide and long, which helps to keep the cape held outwards while the chair slides into the back. {Spoiler - click to view} There's also a black velvet-covered wire 'dome' that he pulls out from the top section of the chair before pulling the cloak over himself which makes it look as though there's still a head underneath it. It's normally covered by the black fringes at the top of the chair.
The chair arms are also wide as one of them has a mask inside it, also hidden by fringing, which is pulled out and onto the seat once the Phantom has slid into the back section.

I don't think Michael Crawford or Sarah Brightman have anything to worry about...lol. I've always preferred the original backing track for the title song. It has enough of a contemporary rock beat to begin with, and without the electric guitars, you don't have the problem of drowning out/overshadowing the Phantom and Christine. especially during the cadenza. It doesn't surprise me that Hal insisted on it to avoid dating the show and being too out of place with the rest of the score, to say nothing of Michael and Sarah's classically-trained voices.
No matter how much or how little of the title track they pre-recorded, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still the only Phantom and Christine who give me chills every time. Absolute perfection.
