While not a musical I plan to see it was very sad seeing the Prince of Wales theatre will all the show marquee removed when up in London, made the building look very sad and a bit dilapidated. At least with it coming back the signs and lights should be back soon and once again be a great sight to see as you amble between Piccadilly and Leicester Square. It’s all reinstated already so don’t fret

It would look even better if it was a different show entirely. I think BoM has been clogging up the West End for way too long!

Well, got my ticket refunded for what should have been reopening night. As recently as West End live they were still advertising it as such. I'd normally just ask for a credit note, but as far as I'm concerned they've had my money under false pretences for quite long enough.
The whole thing has left a really bad taste in my mouth, and after god knows how many visits I think I'm finished with spending money on this show. They don't give a damn.

I loved the front of The Prince of Wales when it had the big curved billboard. Even though I like the facade restored I miss the big neon signs that used to be on it.

Maybe they hadn't even thought of the idea until after West End Live?
The fan performance, which isn't sold out and you can still enter the competition for, isn't the opening night.
It's the equivalent of a final dress rehearsal, for invited family and friends, as other shows have apparently done recently, just not openly advertised.
A show isn't open, until it's open to the public. So you WERE booked in for the opening night.
The Book of Mormon production team obviously DO give a damn, otherwise they wouldn't be doing a free performance for the real fans.

they wouldn't be doing a free performance for the real fans I'm sure this wasn't meant to be come across this way, but suggesting people who booked for the scheduled first performance many months in advance, planned this out carefully, paid the inflated prices, went through changes of reopening dates etc are not "real fans" could be taken with offense. Now, I know that almost all shows have an audience for their final dress rehearsal. That's nothing new. I personally wouldn't read "fan performance" and "dress rehearsal" as meaning the same thing. I can't attend the fan performance date regardless and I'm not the type who would want to post the personal response about why I need a free ticket on my social media, so I will be happy with my ticket to the first public performance. I am looking forward to this show. But whether it should or not, actions like this however well meaning they were intended to be, do leave a sour taste in the mouth.

Of course they'd thought of it. This kind of thing doesn't appear out of the blue. They deliberately pre-empted the opening night with another performance, for the public. Not family and friends, the public - just with a different way of getting tickets. Which, no matter what technicality you try to apply, makes the 15th not the opening night.
I've no interest in 'entering a competition' for something where the winners won't even be announced until the point where train and hotel bookings become prohibitively expensive, not to mention the likelihood of being allocated a seat where I can't see a thing. But thanks for implying that buying a ticket months in advance and letting them hang onto my money through various reschedules makes me less of a fan than some casual FB or Twitter follower who just saw a competition and thought 'hey, free tickets'.
If they'd given a damn, they would have let people with tickets for the 15th exchange them.

Really interesting article thanks. I never got what the white gloves were about in ‘Hamilton’ so that has solved that one. So pleased to hear that Mormon have sharpened up some of its’ more troubling aspects. While I always viewed it as satire, I know my wife simply couldn’t believe that what she was seeing and hearing would ever get onstage.

Great news, nothing wrong in thinking things through. The show needs it badly and will be better for it. Several scenes are just cringeworthy and uncomfortable to sit through. I found the video from the former cast member shared above in the thread extremely insightful in setting this out. Unclear that a few tweaks here and there will solve the lack of consideration behind the show but maybe this needs to be an iterative process, going back to the drawing board a few times. Looking forward to seeing this in a month or so. Reviews (and posts on this board) will surely touch on this issue, it will be interesting to see whether people will be satisfied with the rewrites or will think more work is needed.

It can never be a comfortable watch though. The excessive bad language and ‘jokes’ around religion will always be offensive to someone. Good satire comments and passes judgement on what it believes to be ideologically or politically ridiculous. Someone else will hold an opposing view. It doesn’t shy away from any of it, but failed to take into account how its’ “victims” were portrayed and where the power lay.

When it first opened it excused itself by saying it caused offence to everyone, and that no particular group should be offended. That certainly wouldn’t wash today. Those individual groups would just be collectively outraged.

You can get a free week by signing up to their mailing list. Basically that the creatives and current cast were working through the text and isolating problematic areas to re-work and that Hamilton had restaged portions of ‘What Did I Miss’ to acknowledge Jeffersons double standards re:slavery. There was stuff about the Broadway ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ too.

Would anyone be able to summarise the details from this, it's behind a paywall Ah. I never read NY Times so when I clicked to read it let me as obviously my one free read before they put it behind a paywall. Sorry, I didn’t realise!

It’s not behind a paywall for me, no idea why. However I don’t want the NYT after us so I’ll not reproduce it publicly here.
If anyone wants to read the article PM me.

Now watching a documentary on channel 5 about Jefferson and Sally Hemmings, the element of Hamilton that has been changed. He had over 600 slaves apparently.

You didn’t have to write why you needed a ticket. You had to write about the journey you and your plus one have been on. I literally wrote a sentence saying that my plus one would be my mom cause we’ve been on a journey dealing w my brain cancer- which is true. I got notified a few days ago I won tixs. I’m responding regarding the Broadway fan performance they wouldn't be doing a free performance for the real fans I'm sure this wasn't meant to be come across this way, but suggesting people who booked for the scheduled regardless and I'm not the type who would want to post the personal response about why I need a free ticket on my social media, so I will be happy with my ticket to the first public performance. Emails to the winners of the free fan performance have gone out. I went a bit vulgar and mentioned maggots and a gentleman’s body part in my entry which they apparently didn’t mind as I won!

Just been notified I've won two free tickets for BoM Fan Performance on Thursday 11 November. Seats to be allocated next week. Will definitely use them.
I just completed the pro forma with a brief jokey reason why I deserved to win. Suspect it's just a lottery anyway.
