The Addams Family - UK Tour

Saw this last night, enjoyed it for what it was but I wasn't blown away by it.
Cast were great, as was the atmosphere but the overall book/songs just didn't seem to do it for me. Glad I went and saw it for myself though.

Scott was one of the standouts in the cast for me. I haven't seen Les in the role to be able to comment on that one but would they really need his name? I feel given the other cast members it probably would have sold just as well. 

Saw it in Woking and I think its losing something due to its poor sound management. The show was better, when that was much better, when I saw it in Canterbury. Gomez's vocal vanished every now and again early on which means some of the intro wasn't introduced. . And they seemed to have reasoned that , as Carrie has the strongest vocal, they could put up the orchestra's sound levels to full throttle,  when she was singing her biggest numbers .Carrie's vocals were great otherwise, but no one can be heard with the orchestra at that volume. And, if you can't hear the lyrics , you not only miss the singing, but also the content, and the comedy - which is rather important in a comedy.

Against that,  Samantha Womack was really strong as Morticia, and the sound  team decided not to sabotage her - Morticia was nicely acted, she was looking very confident, and her vocal is now very strong too.

Saw the show last night in Glasgow. Was really looking forward to it after reading your reviews for so long.

First off, the show is not in bad shape for being so far along in it's tour schedule, however, the audience were in incredible spirits last night and I suspect some of the cast had friends and family in attendance. Every single number was met was rapturous applause and every joke landed with deafening laughter so that would no doubt have energised the cast. Les Dennis was out last night and THANK GOD he was because Scott played the role wonderfully. His acting and his singing were all on point that I couldn't have imagined Les Dennis playing the role that strongly.

Cameron and Samantha didn't have great chemistry bit still played off each other well. Cameron in particular was the highlight of the show, it was evident that the show was originally written to have Gomez at the front and centre. Samantha sung and played the part well but her dancing was tired looking and I'd like to see her do something with more energy next time she's cast in a musical. The actors who played Pugsley, the Grandma, and in-laws were fine. Nothing particularly special and nothing particularly bad.

I was extremely disappointed by Carrie Hope Fletcher. I was living abroad when she started being cast in musicals and only moved home last year when she begun doing Addams Family. I assumed, because she seemed to be going from one high profile job to another, that she'd be an absolute star in the making but alas, she was far from it. She had virtually no star power nor charisma. While her singing was lovely she lacked any sort of spirit and character - there was no bite or any sort of darkness that Wednesday Addams needs to have and Carrie just seemed like she had a bad attitude on stage which made her extremely unlikable to watch. Her comedic timing was pretty bland as well, she missed every cue for a joke and each time she attempted to get a laugh it fell disastrously flat. It's such a shame as I really love her online presence but I'd seriously think twice about seeing her in any role in the future. She just isn't a leading lady.

The lad playing Lucas was pretty bland also. His singing voice didn't sound real, it was incredibly animated and people around me were commenting on how bad it was to listen to him. Apart from the fact he was a pretty face he offered nothing to the production. Lurch's slow walking joke got real old real quick. He definitely had friends and family attending last night as each time he walked slowly across the stage the audience would laugh for a few seconds but this select group of people would cheer and whoop and holler as if he was the funniest thing since sliced bread.

I couldn't stop watching the ensemble every time there were on stage... the choreographer should be shot. The dancing was extremely pantomime and amateur, I didn't understand why every syllable needed a dance move to match. Someone needs to have the choreographer chant to themselves every morning "LESS IS MORE" because what every single routine was overkill. It was far too distracting when members of the ensemble would appear and start busting out awful choreography, especially on such a tight stage as I was sure someone was going to get smacked in the face by a rouge foot or a wild hand, which was a shame as I did think the ensemble were very very fine.

The show is lovely and will do well with amateur groups. Most of the songs were forgettable. Half the cast were incredible and half were forgettable but the show is definitely saved by nostalgia and the fact that audience members absolutely adore these characters.

For who? It was fine, passed the time but it doesn’t need watching at home. Nothing happens! Wouldn’t a cast recording be more appropriate so that we can listen to those four tunes in their various guises over and over again? Doesn’t a dvd say ‘look at our tip top shiny show? We want to shout about it’?

I agree, this played at my work last week and the set and sound are excellent for a tour, but I can't see the book/music translating well to the big screen.

Agree -- I've got a few bootlegs of the pre-broadway version, the broadway version and the 2 differing US tour versions and the UK tour is by far the worst (I believe this is like version 6 or 7 of the show, if we include some of the international versions -- I believe even the recently opened Paris production is different yet again!).

Although I do appreciate the adding of Secrets (one of the best songs in the show, in my opinion!), I still think the broadway version is the best.

Was it in at the beginning of the tour? I don't know why, I just seem to remember the audience not laughing at "She'll be Thursday before we know it!" as much as I thought they would. I saw it when it was at the New Wimbledon Theatre. Or perhaps they kept that line in and moved it else where...

Saw this last night in Dartford, Les Dennis skipped again, so with the amount of time he was missing, I only assume he has left the cast.

The 8 show run was sold out and I have never known this at Dartford, I suspect it is the Carrie Hope Fisher effect, she got the biggest cheer at the end. I have a soft spot for this show and am the only one who loved it on Broadway it seems!!! Love the way the Spanish influence is woven into the book and score. I haven't seen Addam Family movies or programmes before, so only known the story told through stage and have to say I love the premise of the charachters and how it works with a 'dysfunctional' family.

Given this is a sell out and the set is excellent for a tour, this could easily parachute into the West End and do a Annie or Evita, would be great for the Playhouses Theatre.

I would love to see this show again, saw it at Woking in September and really enjoyed it, to me the stand outs were the Ancestors I loved how strong the characterisation was in each of them for what is essentially an ensemble track! I am a big fan of the films and have seen some of the black and white TV show, a box set I have never got round to finishing. I really hope this goes to the West End, even for a short run!
