Who have you spotted in the audience at a theatre? Have you sat directly next to anyone famous?

Hoping this counts but I sat next to Guy Garvey at the BFI, Racheal Stirling was on the other side of him. Michael Gambon was also in the audience.
In Memorium to theatre lover Alan Rickman, I do wonder if well-known actors read the forum to get their information like we do.

Saw Miriam Margoyles in the audience at Candide at the Menier Chocolate Factory - she looked like she was asleep at points but I enjoyed it. Scraping the barrel but saw Jake Wood (Max from Eastenders - don't watch it myself) at Oliver when it was at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Will Young asked if I was in the queue for ice cream (I wasn't) at Pr**k Up Your Ears with Matt Lucas. Simon Callow was also in the audience for that performance.

Saw Wallace Shawn at Waste on Monday, also seen Alan Rickman in the bar at the NT prior to Three Days In Summer, Miriam Margolyes at The Red Lion and a Ron Moody Platform at the NT, Julian Sands at Splendour at the Donmar, Dawn French and Gok Wan at Krapps Last Tape, was sat on the opposite side of the aisle to David Walliams and Miranda Hart at the BFI a few years ago, also had Richard Ayoade and Julian Barratt sat behind me there for a Peter Cook & Dudley Moore retrospective there, and Armando Ianucci was sat in the seat in front of me for the screening of Alan Partridge:Alpha Papa, also at the BFI - and not the theatre (or cinema), but Samantha Morton was sat next to me at a Death In Vegas gig at the Barbican, and Adam Buxton sat two seats along from me at Radiohead at the O2 in 2012.

Lovely idea to dedicate this thread to Alan Rickman. I actually did sit next to him once, at the Park Theatre, during a performance of Thérèse Raquin. I didn't realise it was him until the interval when I overheard him talking in that distinctive voice of his.
I've also sat near Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington at the National Theatre, and stood in the queue behind Jude Law in the Old Vic foyer.

I never saw Alan Rickman at the theatre in spite of all his frequent attendance and mine. I will possibly never not be sad about this.
I did see Tobias Menzies walking around the Young Vic bar with a motorcycle helmet at the weekend though, that was nice.

My funniest moment is still sitting in Kara's (Maria on the recent 'The Sound of Music Live' ITV production) seat by mistake at 'Rent Remixed'.
She was still in 'Eastenders' as 'Dawn' I believe at the time!!
Oh and releasing it was Micheal Xiaver in the restroom at Southwark Playhouse for 'Carrie'!!

A few over the years. The most famous was probably Matt Le Blanc at Women on The Edge, with the most inconvenient being Brian May and his hair directly in front of me at Calendar Girls. Saw Parky at the Garrick a few weeks back too. I always breathe a sigh of relief when Brian May is present and not sat in front of me.

Just posted in The Girls thread, but at last night's performance at the Lowry I was sat next to Sue Pollard. Utterly dotty but still charming.
Most bizarre celeb spot for me was being sat behind Bob Hoskins at La Cage aux Folles

Su Pollard was in the audience when I went to see Soho Cinders. She is, as you say, completely dotty, but incredibly friendly. I commented that I had loved her performance in Godspell years and years ago, and she was very happy to stand and reminisce about the production. She then introduced me to her friends and came up to me in the bar at the interval to ask me what I thought of the show. I thought she was completely charming!

Su Pollard gives me my "Famous Person Who's Seen Me In The Audience" story. I was in the front row at a panto (sixteen years ago; ye gods) and one of the cast who knew me from elsewhere passed on the word to Su Pollard. Given that I'd never met her it was something of a surprise when she suddenly waved and shouted "Hello, Matthew", and it took a few seconds before the penny dropped.

I stood next to her in a bar once. In Sheffield of all places. It was very crowded and she was jammed up quite close so I could hear her conversation. Yes dotty, and very tiny!

I think we should dedicate this thread to theatre great and long time theatre supporter Alan Rickman I came on this thread to say that I'd seen Alan Rickman in the audience at the Hampstead for Good People. At Audra McDonald's concert, unsurprisingly, I spotted Hadyn Gwyne, Fra Fee, Elaine Paige, Timothy Sheader and Patricia Hodge.

She was still in 'Eastenders' as 'Dawn' I believe at the time!! Funny that, she was sitting in my (extra legroom) seat on a flight once and made a real fuss about moving (to her normal legroom seat).
