Hi all,
I'm a New Yorker coming to the West End for the first time this September 8 - 11 (and very excited). Does anyone have some strong recommendations for shows to catch while I'm in the area?
I see all the New York theater, so ideally nothing that plays or has played in NYC. Absolutely open to plays or musicals, just looking forward to getting a taste of the West End scene.

I've heard "Groundhog Day" at the Old Vic is amazing too, but haven't seen it myself. It's supposed to be transferring to Broadway next year or so though.

I second the recommendation for "The Play That Goes Wrong". It's hilarious and makes for a good evening. The vast majority of the musicals in London are also currently showing on Broadway, however The Bodyguard and Groundhog Day are both ones that are not currently on Broadway.

Funny Girl (it won't transfer to Broadway, Sheridan Smith is phenomenal and day seats are a bargain if you're willing to get up early enough)
In The Heights (unless you saw it on Broadway of course, though you might want to see it anyway given it's an unusual venue - the King's Cross is in an old part of the railway station and it plays with seats on two platforms!)
Sunny Afternoon (get a discounted ticket from the box office or Leicester Square)
Anything at the National/Open Air/Menier/Young Vic/Old Vic (the latter of which is currently housing Groundhog Day, which nearly everyone who's seen seems to love!)
Returns queue/try the Friday Forty for Harry Potter if you're interested.

Threepenny Opera at the National
1984
The Entertainer with Kenneth Branagh (not opened yet)
See something at the Globe as that's an experience unlike anything in New York. Macbeth is on during your visit
Yerma at the Young Vic is a very hot ticket - sold out but you might get lucky!

I have had American tourists complaining to me about `The Woman in Black`. They thought it was a way of scamming tourists. Having only two actors. How about something at Shakespears Globe. I like daytime there. It looks like mainly Macbeth that week. The Tkts booth in Leceister Square is still a fun, methinks. Anything produced by Sir Cam is good Delfont Mackintosh website |

The Play That Goes Wrong will transfer to Broadway next year.
I would go with Funny Girl as well or other people seem to love it more than me, but there are some great performances so Groundhog Day, as of now it isn't transferring to New York.
Thriller - well perhaps not, I won't be that cruel.

This American thinks The Woman in Black is worth the ticket price - especially as there are loads of discounts. Who cares what the size of the cast is?

Definitely see Funny Girl! I highly doubt that it will transfer but it's an amazing show! I dont know if you have heard of her but Sheridan Smith is so amazing and she's well known in the UK. Amazing treat and day seats are a great bargain!
The Bodyguard is also a great night out at the theatre! Really fun! It's touring the USA next year but Beverley Knight is in the UK show and she's amazing!
There's loads of plays here too that you might fancy? Lots of the musicals here are ones from Broadway.

Regents Park Open Air theatre really a nice experience and I'm told Jesus show very good.
A bit of Chekov at the National Theatre and Threepenny Opera to see one of our best classical actors, Rory Kinnear.

I would also recomend at trip to the National, and reports are that Threepennny Opera is a good show (and Rory Kinnear is excellent) I'd also recomend The Entertainer if only to see Kenneth Brannagh. Likewise The Globe do consistently excellent Shakespeare, and obviously the expereience of the building (their museum/tour is also very good as are the tours of the National)

My itinerary that weekend is Vanities and Allegro on the Saturday, and The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Moon and Giant, two shows by the Human Zoo Theatre Company, at Greenwich Theatre (4pm and 8pm) on the Sunday.
In terms of other shows, the "must see" in London right now has to be Groundhog Day. Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour is also fantastic.

That weekend, it seems to be either Macbeth or 946 at the Globe. I loved the former, though it hasn't necessarily gone down as well with everyone else, and I also loved the latter, which seems to be a much less controversial opinion as it's an extremely lovely production. I understand why people are recommending The Play That Goes Wrong, but as you're avoiding things that are in NYC or have been in NYC, you should probably avoid this one too as it'll be coming to Broadway.  |

Thanks in advance for your help! Definitely some Shakespeare, anywhere! There is so much more variety in the West End shakespeare wise than on Broadway! The Les Mis in London is the best production of that play in the world (besides cheaper than Broadway, much better than the revival!) Groundhog Day, limited run, unique, brilliant, probably not ever going to Broadway Funny Girl, FABULOUS, besides there hasn't been a production of it on Broadway for AGES! Go to the half price ticket booth in Leicester Square, some seats are like 15 pounds for great seats! I saw the woman in black a month ago and think it was terribly overrated! Open Air Theatre! Go, an imaginative new staging of Pride and Prejudice is on when you are there for a STRICTLY LIMITED RUN! Every thing else so far this summer there were suppose to be mind-boggling, fab, revolutionary theatre! Obviously if you were lucky enouph to win one of the Friday Draws on the website Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, no brainer, but unlikely! So many fab productions on in the West End right now, hope I helped! No Man's Land at the Wyndham's Theatre, a new period production starring the fabulous duo team of Ian Mckellen and Patrick Stewart........need I say more! The Mousetrap,fabulous Agatha Christie mystery has been running for about 65 years straight on the West End, good prices, and it is still going for a reason!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
