Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Broadway

Thats interesting. I wonder why its changed from Mother to Father? If its simply Mother/Father verses switched round to suit characters on stage timing-wise or something deeper, socially implied.

They've really butchered the original. Gutted 'Juicy' has been cut. I hope 'Tales of Wonka' is a rehash of 'The Amazing Fantastical History of..' because I loved that song.

I wont be making a trip to see this, but I'd be interested to hear the new songs/replacements on a Broadway soundtrack release which I guess is likely.

Edit: Apparently Charlie's father has been killed off, hence the change of song, answering my first question.

I seem to be among the minority who absolutely loved everything about the West End version and didn't think anything should be changed. I'm sad to see it's been so butchered as I thought it was a wonderful adaptation of the book, although I appreciate that many people were comparing it to the Gene Wilder film and feeling it didn't live up to it. I liked the subplot with the homeless person even if it was a bit obvious.

I thought the music in particular was brilliant, and I don't think it needed any more songs from the film as it was quite clearly meant to be an entirely different version. I see that they've moved 'pure imagination' away from the glass elevator scene and added a new song there. Bad move in my opinion - that song is magical and fits that scene perfectly.

By no means do I wish this bad luck on Broadway, but I think they should've stuck with the version that played here and if this indeed turns out to be the version that tours the UK, I think I'll give it a miss to preserve my happy memories of the original West End run.

I'm not surpried they have gone so over the top on their views on BWW though. They are always arguing, being over the top. There is no middle ground with them, they eachother really love it or really hate it and snap at eachother alot anyway. We are alot more held back here compared to them on that board!

Doesn't surprise me at all that Broadway regulars aren't taking to Charlie and Groundhog Day to be honest. We'd probably be that harsh on them too if we got Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen and Great Comet all in one season.

I am one of those who was extremely disappointed in the West End production.  Still, I held out hope that, after 4 years and lots of feedback, Charlie could still be set right and become the stage musical I imagined it could be.

Unfortunately....

I could cry that no one has got this show right. Mary Poppins was glorious, even Chitty was fun. Charlie has just been a disaster it seems on both sides of the pond.

The show was good in London. The production was right (for me!) and I am a fan of the Film and Book. But the Broadway production looks like a disaster in the making. At least, with the London run, it ran 4 years, and it done good business throughout.

My parents are trying to book this if we end up going to America in the summer and I'm doing all I can to stop them after what I've read on here😂 Praying we can go to Miss Saigon instead

HAHAHA! Wow.

I feel like they have just gotten really lazy? Like you can get away with not having an era/coubtry to be based in, if you have decent set/costume/lighting/projection. Similarly you can get away wih a minimalistic set if your costumes/lighting/projection/songs stand out and the actors use the space to their advantage. But from what I have seen (not a lot!), it really feels like they've just gone 'its fine, the name will sell it' and not put the effort in..
