At Funny Girl today (to be fair, during the interval), lady tucking into box of sushi or some such delight (she produced a metal fork, so I'm guessing she's done this before, obviously not an impulse purchase), then leaving the empty box on the floor for the theatre staff to clear up.

Oh dear god - it just gets worse! If it had been in reaching distance of me I would have picked up the empty carton and thrust it back at her asking her "politely" to dispose of it properly! Had the surplus contents "accidently" spilt on her dress/coat - that would have been a terrible shame!!!! This behaviour has to be challenged!!!!

This evening, woman to my left with giant picnic (sandwiches, crisps, the works). Woman to my right loudly talked to the characters or exclaimed aloud.
Opera not play, but still.

Old lady next to me yesterday with walking stick laid across my leg space. Fair enough, I know it has to go somewhere but she was with someone else, so why not put it on the other side? Obviously not a regular theatre goer as she was asking her friend lots of questions (very loudly) about who was in the show and what the story was. Then she started rummaging in her huge bag and took out a chocolate bar which she unwrapped (noisily) and chomped through, followed by numerous sweets, then another bar of chocolate. This was all in the first half! Second half started, she was talking very loudly again so I shushed her and she gave me the most horrible stare. I thought I might get a whack with the walking stick! She never clapped once either. Why bother going?

Very badly behaved audience at 'The Mousetrap' Wednesday afternoon.
- Phones went off multiple times throughout the show, despite the explicit requests before both acts for them to be switched off. The actors deserve a medal for not losing their marbles every time another damn phone went off. - The lady sat next to me decided to tuck into a jumbo packet of sweets during act 1. She then proceeded to make as many irritating noises with her mouth as she could, one of which sounded like a cross between burping and breaking wind. - Extremely loud whispering in the row behind me from a younger couple who'd clearly seen the play before and were giving away major plot details. I'm pretty sure the actors could hear them. - A minor mistake happened on stage when one of the actors sat down and accidentally knocked a lamp over. A member of the audience decided to loudly declare "Oooh, she knocked the lamp over!" when we all clearly saw but had the manners not to point it out. She carried on and one of her co-stars put the lamp back as if it were part of the script. - Multiple games of "Who can cough/clear their throat the loudest and ruin all the tension?"

Tonight at Wilton's:
Act One: Couple in front kissing, man putting arm round, taking his arm off, putting it round again (repeat) throughout. They moved elsewhere in Act Two, which brings me to . . .
Act Two: For the first 5-10 minutes, I could hear someone's music playing as if it was coming through their headphones. I couldn't hear it clearly enough to say to whoever's music it was.

Phones, talking and eating seem to be the recurring themes on this thread. It astonishes me that folk cannot go an hour (first act) without stuffing their faces. No wonder there is an obesity epidemic in this country!

Forgot to say, hit the jackpot at Aladdin.
Ten minutes in, two girls clamber in late and occupy the two empty seats next to me.
Twenty minutes in, they start unpacking their picnic, which they’d wisely packed at the bottom of their bag, ignoring both me and the people in front turning around and doing their best Paddington Bear Hard StareTM.
Twenty-five minutes in, start eating their picnic, and when I say picnic I mean picnic – firstly something else, but then it turns out they’d packed those crisps which are very crunchy (annoying everyone who can hear), and, worse, really, really smelly (vinegary, annoying mostly me). When I notice it’s not just a small bag but TWO entire tubs of the stuff, and because clearly other people were getting antsy too, I lean over and do my best mock-polite whispering “Sorry, that’s quite noisy, would you mind waiting until the interval?”
Forty minutes in, could they heck. Crunch crunch crunch, hard stare goes ignored. I tend to assume people who eat/check phones/whisper often don’t realise how loud they’re being, and tend to be apologetic if you ask. So when these people know they’re annoying a lot of people who’ve paid an awful lot of money to be here but just don’t give a damn... I can’t quite remember what I said, but it wasn’t polite. So they put them away, and I relax, because it’s not like they’re going to do anything else to distract me, is it, I can sit and enjoy the sh-oh what the f*** are they doing now...
Out come the f***ing phones. It’s like they were working their way through a list of how to piss people off. The usher comes along (good ushers here, shining their lights on phones) and tells them off, so they graciously acknowledge their fourth wrongdoing of the night and turn it off they stroppily say (not whisper, say) “I’M TURNING IT OFF!” like a bolshy teenager, then somehow take five minutes to find the off button. And you know the best bit? I can see they’re on Facebook, and I’m 99.9% sure they were complaining about how badly I was behaving towards them at the theatre.
Something happened during the interval, and they behaved themselves in the second half, but when people are such arses you keep waiting for them to arse around further – it took a long time to relax into the show. So thanks to those two strangers, I’ve ticked off my year’s bad behaviour bingo card in one bloody hour.
P.S On a lighter note...
Not a show, but went to the Abstract Expressionism exhibition at the Royal Academy today and (as often happens) had the experience marred by a few parents who had brought very small children with them who spent the whole time screaming with no attempt by the parents to quieten their little darlings down And also incidentally a fair few families with nice quiet well behaved children! So not saying don't bring them, but if they are screaming or running about take them out!
One of my favourite experiences in an art gallery was going around the David Hockney ipad art exhibition at the Royal Academy, some three or four years ago now. Whilst pretentious sods like myself were staring at a wall full of pictures of fairly similar, nondescript, brightly coloured trees and pretending we could see deep meaning within them, a parent turned to his little bundle of joy and excitedly said “I think I can see a Gruffalo in one of those!”.

Perhaps a lot of people complained and House Manager gave them a good slap around the face!
Aladdin seems to attract the very worst in audience behaviour. I really could not tolerate another visit.

Saw Sister Act in Milton Keynes yesterday. Oh my God, the rustling of sweet wrappers in the audience!! I've never heard anything like it. If you have to stuff your face with sweets, why not bring something fairly silent like wine gums, not those bloody things all individually wrapped in little bits of noisy cellophane...
Not to mention the people coming in 20 minutes late, having a chat, a phone going off in act 2... Audiences in the west end are paragons of virtue in comparison!

Bit ironic given all these comments about audience chomping that the final advice at "Buddy" was "Don't forget to eat." Actually, the audience at the Kings, Southsea, wasn't too bad. Some crisp munching at the beginning but I didn't see any full scale picnics.

Well, not THAT surprised, given what else people get up to in theatres!

Royal Albert Hall last night. Carlos Acosta in his farewell tour. Audience impeccable. Pin-drop silence. Until...... ....the bow. Oh my! How rude were these people? Hundreds of them. From all parts of the Albert Hall. They just got up and started filing out. Admittedly the applause did go on for a few minutes. But this began almost before the whole of the cast had come out and well before the orchestra were honoured. It wasn't late - about 9.45. We, too, had a long journey home. But we had just been entertained by some of the most incredible dancers and musicians in the world and people could not even wait for 3 minutes. Honestly? You know what? If anyone had tried to get past me I would have been happy to make their journey out of the Hall quicker and shoved them over the rail.

I was at "Kenny Morgan" this afternoon and a lady sitting in front row fell asleep (not noisy, but it must be horrible for the actors) and a decrepit gentleman behind me watched a video on his phone that included a barking dog.

Ugh I had a 'that's going on the forum when I get home' moment last night....
The Other Room in Cardiff- 46 seats so no room to swing a cat, and you can hear every breath your fellow audience members take. The woman next to us had a cup and saucer filled with pistachio nuts-this was never going to end well was it? much cracking, crunching and jangling of crockery. Eventually she finished. But that wasn't all. Oh no. She felt the need to narrate the entire piece with frequent 'That's true' and 'Yes' and my favourite "typical man"
Her partner thankfully didn't engage with her, but it was incredibly distracting, you aren't at home shouting at Bake Off people!!

Wow. I hate it when people watch videos with the sound on speaker no matter where they are. As far as I'm concerned it's noise pollution. Bah humbug! But in a theatre... !!!

The person in the centre of Stalls Row F at the Savoy last night whose phone rang not once but FOUR FECKIN' TIMES before they managed to silence it... at least twice during the beautiful final performance of "Who Are You Now?"
Oh and the woman further along that row who felt the need to constantly comment on and explain what she was watching to the three companions sitting to her right, loud enough for the furthest from her to hear.
That aside... what a fantastic farewell to Funny Girl.

The usher, bless her, was doing her best but she could not really crawl along the row as the culprit was sitting in the middle. But her glare was enough to freeze blood.

K25, heard the phone too, madly irritating. I was in the same row as Darius's family (ex wife, Mum, Dad), guy next to me was greeted enthusiastically by them .. His girlfriend chatted loudly though curtain up and at the third phone going off the guy next to me took his phone out, checked thoroughly and then turned off.
