Singing at the theatre of course shouldn’t be done, but the twitter pile on Alison Hammond rubs me the wrong way. It feels like everyone who’s ever stepped foot on a stage is getting involved, all tweeting the same thing and patting each other on the back. I think she probably was just trying (and yes, failing) to be funny, let everyone know she loves Wicked enough to know the words and create a bit of light-hearted discussion. Anyone demanding an on-air apology needs to give their head a wobble, it’s not that serious.

This Morning has to address this given how prominent the reaction has been.
The pressure is going to go away because of the Twitter comments. Indeed O'Leary's ill advised attempt to distance himself has made it worse
The theatre community is going to carry on raising the issues and that is only right.
Wishing won't make this go away. Each week we are seeing disruption in theatres round the country. The press will keep linking back to ITV

They will do something to try to draw a line under it and distance themselves.

They're unlikely to fire Alison and Dermot for the comments or stop using Vanessa.

To be fair, bad behaviour is getting worse everywhere and is certainly not exclusive to jukebox musicals.
I wonder if the rise of ticket sites like TodayTix, where people who normally wouldn't go to the theatre, can get reasonably priced seats has contributed to this? Cultural capital is a real thing. Theatre being more accessible is great, but perhaps theatres need to be thinking about how they combat this. Perhaps it should be "if you sing even once, you are ejected", for example.
I went to see Phantom last week and was genuinely shocked at the amount of people mid row getting up to go to the toilet, etc, mid-act. They may as well have had a revolving door.

I agree, people want theatre to be accessible to everyone but I think people need to learn to behave and it's not just a theatre issue, it's anywhere with a communal experience like cinemas, concerts, sport etc.

GBNews are talking about whether lockdown has resulted in a reduction in etiquette now (Don't judge me, my parents have it on)

GBNews are talking about whether lockdown has resulted in a reduction in etiquette now (Don't judge me, my parents have it on) It has been an issue from well before 2020. But it does seem that reports are more frequent since things reopened I would agree. We were threatened with violence after asking someone to stop singing along at Priscilla in Manchester years before lockdowns. Pleasantly surprised at the segment on GB News, actively saying however much you want to, don't sing along unless it's a specific performance and pointing out the issue in Manchester wasn't merely the singing along, but the level of violence it descended to.

For many people, the first experience of live theatre is often a pantomime. And there active audience participation is very much part of the tradition.
I wouldn't want to change that tradition but we have to find ways of indicating very clearly how different theatre events require different behavioural norms.
Schools can play a big part on this. And, of course, parents and grandparents.
Theatres should, perhaps, return to the days of pre show announcements.
It will take a long time to break the current descent into frequent disruption

They do promote a lot of shows on This Morning, so I’d imagine the criticism will be fairly short-lived. At most they’ll probably have an incredibly brief “oops, we got it wrong” non-apology moment on tomorrow’s show.
I do think people are losing a bit of perspective on this. Yes, the segment was stupid, but it’s the theatres that need to be doing more, or rather less in the case of pushing alcohol on people.
The been to some ATG venues recently where I’ve noticed they seem to have started to play a loud-ish ringtone every so often before the show. No announcement. Why can they not just say to out your phone on silent? Same with the no photography thing. Just make a loud announcement over the speakers and let the ushers do something more productive than traipse up and down the aisles with a sign.

Totally agree Bring back the serious pre show announcement. It’s like every one is pussy footing around the subject. ‘For the enjoyment of everyone around you please turn off your phone and no talking or singing during the performance. Thank you. It’s not hard

Twent to see Phantom last week and was genuinely shocked at the amount of people mid row getting up to go to the toilet, etc, mid-act. They may as well have had a revolving door. Have noticed ushers have pretty much given up the ‘you will be admitted or re admitted at an appropriate point in the performance. The first 35 minutes of a show I saw recently was a constant stream of latecomers. Then letting people back in from the toilet whenever. It used to be during applause at the end of a number? Whatever happened to that ?

Such an interesting thread - but hasn't this decline in behaviour in theatres, cinemas and concert halls been brewing for some time? It's total selfishness and a culture in which many people now have the attention span of a gnat. It's got to a point where I'm going to fewer things. Is it not possible for these people to sit for a couple of hours without swilling plastic cups of pinot and stuffing their faces. It's even worse at concerts where there's a good chance that some idiot will have their camera in your sightline for most of the performance. The venues need to get their acts together.
By contrast, I was at a Thai boxing show on Saturday night and - apart from cheering supporters - the behaviour of everyone was exemplary and of the utmost courtesy. We do indeed live in strange times!

I volunteer at a regional theatre, and it's the production company for each show who decide everything around announcements, filming and photography, latecomers, signage etc, which is why there's such variation in rules between shows. We do whatever we're instructed to do by them, it's never our decision. Most companies are against pre-show announcements as they feel it sets the shows off in a "buzz-kill" tone. And yet they still want us to stop people from recording, taking photos and singing! It's really not an easy job to do sometimes.

I also volunteered at a regional theatre until recently, I resigned after 7 years and still feel sad about it but audience behaviour has been noticeably worse since covid and I wasn't prepared to put up with that anymore. I have recently started volunteering at my local theatre and I must admit am dreading poor behaviour and having to try and stop it. No issues so far, though that is largely due to the productions i have been in.

Many audience members were lovely and it was nice seeing regulars, however it's always the negative ones that stick in the memory unfortunately. Yes it's definitely worth remembering that the "badly-behaved" are in the massive minority, I'm coming up to 200 shifts and I can count the number of really difficult people on one hand. Most people once they've been told to stop filming or be quiet are completely fine afterwards. Definitely don't let these incidents put any of you off volunteering, it's a really tiny portion of audience behaviour overall.

As predicted, doesn't look like any sort of statement on This Morning. Have struggled to watch the first half hour of it and never seen such an inane poorly presented tv show so gave up.

I'm guessing it's partly because none of the parties involved are on the show today. Maybe we will get something when they are back on. But I am not holding my breath about getting an apology from Vanessa. She comes over as the type of person who would not back down.

I was a volunteer in a theatre for 10 years and, as others have said, the majority of people were very nice. I preferred musical audiences to plays as they were generally much friendlier. We had a strict policy of not allowing any late arrivals into the theatre until the interval and if they left during the show to go to the toilet they were not readmitted. This was for practical purposes as the theatre was small and people would have to walk across the front of the stage and sometimes on the stage to get to and from their seats. This sometimes could be problematic and caused a few problem. But mainly I have only very happy memories especially when you were recognised by returning customers.

I think I'm inclined to put too much of a positive spin on things but I see a world that is trying to make us more comfortable - nice seats, able to take drinks in, relaxed performances for those who need them, facilities for the disabled etc. And this is a good thing.
Unfortunately this gives the more selfish in society space to take the p**s.

One way to deal with latecomers/toilet trip makers is to have an area set aside in a foyer or bar where people can watch the show on a screen until the interval/next opportune moment. That allows them to continue to watch what they have paid to see and to not disturb others
