Funny to think there was once a whole subset of children's musicals on Christian & Classical themes and, in that domain at least, Patricia Hodge was your best bet for a soul diva! 'Jonah Man Jazz' was before 'Joseph...' I believe; but 'Joseph' surely led to this one on the Trojan Horse. A vague memory of 'Great Big Groovy Horse' (Christmas Day BBC Two, 1975) has had me smiling for decades; I just stumbled upon this clip yesterday. The title song - the one bit I've never forgotten. With entertainment like this, did we ever really need more than 3 TV channels? x.com/BBCArchive/status/945277963859197953

I woke up in a terrible mood which lifted the minute I saw GBGH.This clip is fantastic. No parody or Stiles & Drewe creation could match up to this.If the rights are still available and the rest of the show is as mind-blowing as the opening number, this needs to be revived for the theatre without delay.

Ah, good to hear the Great Big Groovy Horse worked some magic on you annette . We all need it! I wish I could remember a single other thing about it - other than the title song. It would be fun to restage it 70s style, with handheld mics and gowns; plus the kind of dance moves you used to get from the Geoff Richer Dancers on TV spectaculars. IMDB says "The original version of this script was actually first performed in Elmgrove Junior School in Harrow, in 1974. The script was written by friends of the school's music teacher, Miss Gilbert, and the performance attended by BBC staff, who then bought the play and produced this film". BBC Genome says: A rock-musical romp through the legend of The Wooden Horse of Troy in a version specially written for BBC2 by SIMONE BLOOM and ARNOLD SHAW with additional material by PHILIP GRIFFIN , PAUL CIANI and JONATHAN COHEN starring Bernard Cribbins as The Storyteller and Paul Jones as Menelaus with PATRICIA HODGE, NIGEL WILLIAMS and JULIE COVINGTON Also featuring RICHARD BARTLETT, MIQUEL BROWN, KIM GOODY, MICHAEL HOWE, DEREK JAMES, JULIAN LITTMAN, RICHARD OWENS, MICHAEL STANIFORTH, CAROLINE VILLIERS, MAYNARD WILLIAMS Musical direction and arrangements JONATHAN COHEN Choreographer IRVING DAVIES Sound ADRIAN STOCKS Lighting DUNCAN BROWN Designer JUDY PORTER Producer PAUL CIANI

max,I'll get straight on to Simone, Arnold, Philip and Miss Gilbert to find out whether the rights are available. Perhaps you'd like to co-produce it with me (and of course take a sizeable finder's fee from the back end of the budget)?Once the word gets out about GBGH there's bound to be a bunfight amongst west end producers to option it.

I actually remember watching this in the 70s and was mesmerised at the time - but have never been able to find a clip...until now!
Come on BBC - get it on the player archive
