I went to see Little Piece Of You at Drury Lane last night and wanted to share a few thoughts. It's always exciting to see a new show, especially one I knew nothing about. It said on the advertising that this was a concert but the definition of concert seems stretched here as it was a full show - sets, costumes, choreography, merch!
I was mainly attracted by the casting of Mica Paris (who really must do more theatre soon!) and Dujonna Gift both of whom were superb. David Bedella also had a small non-singing role.
The whole thing was written by Kjersti Long, who describes herself as a 'music influencer' and I was previously unaware of her. She wrote it when she was 14 (she is 17 now) and she played one of the leads.
The issue I had was, this is very similar to Next To Normal. A family drama with mental health concerns, a character dies very early then keeps turning up to sing, rock/pop score.
The cast were swarmed at the stage door which must have caught the theatre by surprize as there was nothing set up. Dujonna spent a considerable amount of time speaking to everyone. A large teenage audience seemed to really connect with it.
Just a shame it was so similar to something that has recently closed...

I don't know if it's because I had a bad day yesterday, but unfortunately I think it was one of the most dull things I've ever seen. The voices were amazing, the songs were fine, the dialogue just massively dragged for me. I know that this reflected the mental state of the characters, but it was not an enjoyable watch for me.
Looking forward to seeing whatever Dujonna Gift does next though, I thought that she was great in Two Strangers and did she did a very good job with what she was given here.

The stage door was so very chaotic! Somebody is going to get seriously hurt if the theatres by busy roads can't sort their stage doors out... |

Much of the crowd seemed to gather in the road as well, eventually they ended up putting some cones around them. It's definitely a hazard with quite a few kids running around. |

I think she has acquired a huge fan base from Two Strangers - rightly so, she and Sam deserve the Olivier nods for that. A lot of the social media posts for Two Strangers also went viral. |
