Yeah i found the Adelphi production a massive disappointment. Basic direction, hammy acting (especially from Philip Quast as Peron), the static set while pretty didnt help make the production come alive. The Kenwright production is an improvement Well there's a first time for everything

Elphaba holding her anorak up behind her 'a la schoolboys running around the playground pretending to fly' in DG. There's a drag artist on Canal Street already doing this in Manchester. Stood on a stool, flying on a mop..

You won't regret it, just you see! How'd you mean? If you do need to book flights in order to see this then I think/hope you'll find its worth it! (Or did I get the wrong end of the stick?! 😕)

Saw this last night. Never seen it before apart from the film which was years ago.
The show itself is quite good but definitely not my favourite Andrew Lloyd Webber.
I liked the actor playing Che a lot. I quite liked the actress playing Eva but I didn't like some of her acting choices (perhaps direction) as I found it way too over the top. She struggled with some of the higher notes but mostly I liked her voice enough.
I found the ending of the show very abrupt and odd.
I will be buying the soundtrack (despite not liking all the songs), so any recommendations of which version to buy?!

That was my main issue, Emma really struggled a bit with the high notes and key changes, she had these issues in Wicked too, but otherwise I really liked her portrayal.

I haven't listened to the revival recording but I don't think you can beat Elaine Paige and the Original London Recording.

That doesn't have as many tracks as other recordings so I'd rather get one with more. How about the one with Julie Covington?

Haven't listened to that one either sorry 😂 I just picked the Elaine Paige one because Elaine Paige (can you tell I quite like Elaine Paige? 😂) But I think the concept album with Julie Covington is probably a good shout if you want the whole score

Fair enough. I'm leaning towards that one, unless anyone feels particularly strongly about the more recent ones??!

I know she doesn't have the power of Paige and Patti and her voice is a bit of an acquired taste, plus the songs on the concept album aren't necessarily my favourite arrangements either but I do actually think La Covington is my favourite Evita.

I think the American Premiere Recording is the definitive recording of this score (as it appears onstage. The original concept album is great for other reasons).

Forgot to mention some quite wobbly spotlight work on Wednesday night. Likely a dep, new to the show, possibly a student, probably trying their best. I've only f/spotted a few shows and I absolutely hate it.

Thanks @ryan . Anyone got any opinions about the Elena Roger recordings?? So the second Elena Roger recording is the Broadway one, also with Ricky Martin and is a double CD of the entire show. For me this one is definitive as it's complete (the 1st complete recording since the Patti one in the 70s?), up to date and has the ALW/David Cullen orchestrations which the current tour has adapted for the worse. I also like Elena Roger's voice and saw her many times at the Adelphi. I also really like Ricky Martin's voice. Apparently onstage his acting wasn't amazing. Though he's so hot I doubt it mattered.

The Broadway revival was pretty good overall - and I agree, the new double CD recording was very well done to capture the ALW score and new orchestrations. Ricky Martin was fine on stage. The criticisms were that Che was being directed to be more of a narrator so there wasn't the tension between him and Eva as in the original. Sadly the other problem was Elena. The early word was that her voice was shot - and I'm not quite sure if she was out for an illness as well. When I saw her, she was "OK" - but when you're playing the title role, you're expecting a lot more than simply "OK" The funniest rumor floating in NY was that the producers (since it wasn't a RUG production) tried to get Patti LuPone to take over the role. Don't know if people were joking or what - never would've happened. Too bad they didn't try to get Eden Espinosa. She did a regional production about a year ago - and the clips and reviews of her were pretty stunning

Yes I didn't quite understand the role of Che. Sometimes he seemed like a narrator, then he was being beaten up. What is his character meant to be?

Don't know if people were joking or what - never would've happened... Given that the role first appears when Eva is mid teens that would have been a bit of a stretch even for Patti In therms iff the recordings there will always be a place in my heart for the concept album with Julie C. The complete version is the new Broadway recording. I saw Elena in London and she was brilliant in it. The woman playing it on tour at the moment though is the best I've seen it played and sung - she is stunning.

Previously she was standby Elphaba in Wicked and then promoted to full time, and she generally had negative reviews, mixed at best. It's great that she's found a role she's more suited to!

Other rumours were lea Michele and Sierra boggess with Ramin Karimloo to come in together.
