Not so, according to Lauren King at Regent's Park Open-Air Theatre when I was in touch with her today... 🤣

Funny enough I was also told that they would be doing WSS as the first of their 2025 season but I wasn't so sure when people kept saying the National were thinking of doing it.

I just love how unsubstantiated rumours can be posted here. PS I've heard on good authority the next summer's musical at the Coliseum will be The Sound of Music on ice with the nuns on trapezes.

The NT sent out a questionaire last year testing the water in what audiences wanted and what they would pay for.WSS was one of the examples they used. They also used Idris Elba doing Macbeth. This hasn't happened either although early starts for performances did eventually come into fruition.

For every unsubstantiated rumour there are fifty actual facts, or at least half facts from board members. Nobody wants to put their name to fantasy because they know they’ll be called out on it. Things very often change at short notice, normally where money or rights have fallen through, so that what was fact, no longer exists.

WSS and Night Music in the same season at the same theatre could work but its not even a Sondheim centenary year

WSS was the title I had heard so I was surprised when you said ALNM - WSS is also much more McOnie's bag as a choreographer (he's not much of a director...)

Shaun Tossell says that this isn't planned for Regent's Park but it is connected in some way. Is this a hint for the Donmar seeming as Tim Sheader now runs that?

It seems my source got it mixed up because of the artistic director. They apparently have a big star for Madame Armfeldt.

Surely the Donmar is too small a venue for a musical revival like this? Or am I being naive as to the likely demand?

I don´t think the Donmar is the adequate venue for ALNM... but happy to be proven wrong. How I wish it had been the ENO summer musical, even with their prices.

Where Regent's Park was perfect, the Donmar doesn't feel right to me for this. It's too cramped. And surely it's a show that warrants something larger. But I will happily see it again, wherever it is.

A big name as Madame Armfeldt?
Assume it's one of the great acting Dames. And a big name id say limits it to Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren or Judi Dench. Seems a great full circle moment for it to be Judi.
