I have seen Maria Friedman twice in concert/cabaret. Both times I left at the interval. Also I didn't like her in the Sondheim gala as Mrs Lovett. On the other hand, her direction in Merrily we roll along (London) was amazing. Maybe she could direct? Agreed. I rate her as a director but as a performer she always leaves me cold.

She was outstanding in Lady in the Dark at the National in 97

I’ve only seen her at the Rodgers and Hammerstein concert last year but thought she was one of the weaker performers.

Saw her in first London production of Passion. Although she was very impressive, I couldn't make the piece work for me despite seeing it twice. Also the excellent in Sunday in Park Me too Talisman. I am a huge Sondheim fan, but Passion is the exception. Three different productions and I cannot find my way into it - I just dislike the characters so much. MF is usually fantastic though. Pleased to hear it. I tried hard and thought it was just me.

Another one for not liking Passion, and I love everything Sondheim did but just couldn't take to Passion.

I like Passion as a sow and have the DVD and both the London and Broadway cast recordings.
I saw the West End production but didn't like Maria Friedman in it. To me, on the cast recording she sounds more desperate that Donna Murphy- just an opinion

This was the season we saw absolutely everything in town, but could never muster any enthusiasm for ‘Passion’.(but agree that ‘Lady in the Dark’ was impressive.)

Someone I have never seen perform on stage, she has been on stage in years - but could well imaging being a wonderful Madame Armfeldt and that is Maria Friedman. The old woman in the wheelchair Armfeldt?! 🤣

Dame Josephine Barstow played her in the ON production in Leeds a couple of years ago and Liaisons was possibly the highlight. I enjoyed the rest although it didn’t blow me away. It was spoilt by the staging and the endless appearance of the Quintet who were inserted into the action at every opportunity, even when they weren’t required to sing. Even Send In The Clowns didn’t escape them peering at Desirée from behind bits of set. Very distracting, very odd.

I believe Alex Young was Desiree whilst at RAM and I recall her saying she’d love to play it in a professional production.

Diana Rigg would have been a great Madame Armfeldt too. She was about the best thing in the movie version Michelle Dockery as a possible Desiree? Regents Park would be a great setting for. Or if they can get big names, the ENO or Palladium summer shows. I suspect ALNM is not commercial enough for the Palladium and not exactly fun.

I'd argue it is commercial enough for the Palladium provided it's got a star (but it would need a proper star, like A List)
Perfect for Regents Park though as we've all said. Top of act 2 - 'the sun won't set' as the sun is setting? Gorgeous

This is where I once again start my 'Cate Blanchett for Desiree' campaign I guess 😂

Imagine if they could get Cate and then coax Judi to do Armfeldt. A “Notes on a Scandal” reunion would be the most amazing pairing ever.

Patricia Hodge would make a good Mme Armfeldt after seeing her recently in Pippin.
